Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver charged after visiting ICE facility in New Jersey

After the Trump administration charged a sitting judge and a sitting mayor in separate cases, a Democratic member of Congress has joined the list.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has arrested a sitting judge and a sitting mayor, leaving many to wonder whether a member of Congress might soon join the list. Wonder no more.

The acting U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, Alina Habba, announced on Monday that her office was charging Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., with "assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement."

The basic elements of the story are straightforward. Earlier this month, a group of Democratic officials, including three members of Congress, visited Delaney Hall, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in New Jersey. The point, according to the lawmakers, was to conduct oversight, which is a core congressional responsibility.

I saw the video and that's some bullshit. He was outside the gate in the parking lot. If I'm protesting on the steps in front of the USDA the security guards don't have the authority to cuff me and drag me inside the facility. At best they would detain me outside until the police arrived. They did what they did because it was the scariest thing they thought they could get away with.

If she caves, that sends a message that resistance is over. We have to be willing to go to prison, to make the world aware of what's happening.

El Salvador arrest prominent human rights lawyer

MEXICO CITY — Leading human rights activist, Ruth López, has been arrested in El Salvador, after the Attorney General's office accused her of embezzlement of state funds. López leads the anti-corruption and justice program for the human rights organization Cristosal.

López has been an outspoken critic of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele. She and her organization have documented human rights abuses in El Salvador — including inhumane conditions in jails and the extended state of emergency, during which the government has suspended many constitutional rights and imprisoned tens of thousands of suspected gang members without following due process.

While welcoming the removal of legislation in House Republicans' budget reconciliation package that would empower U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to revoke the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit it deems supportive of a terrorist organization, rights groups on Monday urged vigilance, warning that GOP lawmakers could slip the contentious provision back into a future draft of the legislation.

"NEW YORK (#AP) — Less than three weeks after his release from an immigration jail, the #Palestinian activist #MohsenMahdawi strode across the graduation stage at #ColumbiaUniversity on Monday morning, savoring a moment the #Trump administration had fought to make impossible.

Draped in a keffiyeh, Mahdawi, 34, paused to listen to the swell of cheers from his fellow graduates. Then he joined a vigil just outside #Columbia’s gates, raising a photograph of his classmate Mahmoud Khalil, who remains in federal custody."-

Microsoft employee interrupts CEO’s keynote with pro-Palestinian protest

Johana Bhuiyan
Mon 19 May 2025 14.27 EDT

"“As one of the largest companies in the world, Microsoft has immeasurable power to do the right thing: demand an end to this senseless tragedy, or we will cease our technological support for Israel,” read the email... “If leadership continues to ignore this demand, I promise that it won’t go unnoticed. The world has already woken up to our complicity and is turning against us. The boycotts will increase and our image will continue to spiral into disrepair.”"

We need more of this. Let's make the oligarchy afraid to leave their homes.

And then let's find those homes.

I'm one of the lucky ones who managed to buy a house, but fuck me for being about to try to get a HELOC so I can do some maintenance on it.

An old shitty plane at that. He's not stealing it, he's extorting it somehow. He's a mob guy after all.
in reply to pelespirit

It's probably better than his Dump Plane and knows it needs upgrades he can not afford. If he accepts the plane as a ~~bribe~~ congressional allowed gift, he is going to have the people fix it up for him at our expense.

It sounds an awful lot like the Qataris were trying to just get rid of the thing, and orangeboi likes shiny objects, so they presented it to him as a shiny object. AFAIK it was becoming a logistics and maintenance liability for the Qataris, and orangeboi is just gonna use our taxpayer dollars to take care of that, because of course

trump is a child at this game. Walmart has such tight control over its vendors it could require all of them to create new SKUs and slightly change the packaging (perhaps even the quatities/serving size or item packages) which would then be whole new products with the built in higher prices. Walmart could then claim they've raise prices on zero new products and its simply the items available are more expensive to buy from their vendors.

Further Walmart would close stores before it takes a consistent loss. Imagine the damage to trump's image with his MAGA cohort if the local Walmart shut down with a giant banner out front saying "Store closing due to tariffs".

"We stopped the Woke Giant™©® Walmart and saved local business! MAGA!"

Nothing ever causes damage when words are just tools that don't have to adhere to reality. :/

Driving another 40 to 60 minutes to get to the next closest grocery store in rural America may actually change their minds. Remember, GOP voters are frequently very quick to change their tune when they are personally negatively affected by policy.

A better message:

"closed due to trump taxes"

His name should be on it, and call it what it is, a tax. Conservatives like to foam at the mouth at the sound of taxes after all. It's one of the few things they've been trained to do.

It should, but it won't. Even without checking, there's a 0% chance the Waltons and Wal-Mart's upper management aren't MAGAs. They're not gonna eat the tariffs, but they're not gonna throw Trump under the bus any more than they have to either.

They aren't MAGA. They're in only for themselves and will temporarily ally with anything they think make them more in the long run. Which currently is Trump with MAGA, and while they share the motivation with him, it's selfish. I mean if he wanted to, Trump could offset the higher cost. Why should Walmart and not the one causing it?
in reply to MuskyMelon

Wal-Mart is a multi billion dollar company. Their board has a fiduciary responsibility to maximize shareholder value.

Falling for jingo-istic sloganism and propaganda meant for the uneducated, shows a clear lack of competence. This is especially true in light of the fact that Donald Trump campaigned loudly about his intent to go nuts with tariffs:

An uneducated ignoramus has the luxury of being able to claim with sincerity that they didn't understand how tarrifs work.

No such excuse exists with the board at Wal-Mart.

If I was a shareholder, not only would I be suing for breach of fiduciary responsibility, I'd be ask8ng for a criminal investigation.

Is Trump’s base racist? Social scientists begin to weigh in

President Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters are motivated by their prejudices, not economic concerns, social scientists contend. Will Democrats stop trying to win their votes?

In January, Smith and his University of Kansas colleague, associate sociology professor Eric A. Hanley, published a 47-page paper deconstructing the Republican president’s appeal. Building on decades of scholarship about the lure of authoritarianism and their own analysis of American voting psychology in 2012 and 2016, the social scientists make an argument that some may find offensive and others unsurprising.

It goes something like this: Trump’s biggest supporters are motivated by bigotry and want him to hurt the people they dislike.

Note: There's a lot to unpack in this article, and this just seems to be the hook.

That's the document literally describing what a president is and what it can do... Claiming it "doesn't apply" is not even a coherent argument
