Hasan Piker is begging Democrats to get angry and fight Trump
Progressive bro whisperer Hasan Piker digs in his heels against Democrats after border patrol detention

He keeps saying that...
But can't go any further with what he wants.
Dudes acting like a toddler who was told McDonald's ice cream machine is broke. The toddler doesn't have a plan of action, they're just upset. Even when you're actively driving them to a new place to get ice cream, all they know is they don't have any yet
Not sure what else to expect from a nepo baby streamer...

Same answer...
And I still have the same question:
What does anyone expect them to do?
If you think Bernie and AOC can do more, I'm sure they'd love to know how you expect them to accomplish it. Seriously, if you, this nepo streamer, literally anyone has a better path, everyone on the left would love to hear it.
Like, the chair change is huge, and the biggest win we've had in half a century.
We're on our way to get ice cream, we just can't instantly teleport to a new McDonald's, we have to drive there. And no amount of screaming or crying will get there faster. Believe me, everyone in the car would rather be there already
I don't find your argumentation convincing at all.
You go from a priori defining the democrats as a party that both already knows public opinion, that enhact the optimal strategies to a point where there's not even the notion of a better strategy, but you never draw the connecting between that and where we are now, historically and politically.
There's two party in your (?) country, and currently one of them is blatantly disregarding human rights.
It's fair to assume the other party has, is, failing in opposing that.
The argument of Piker, of course, is not in good faith. He thinks the democrats are not aequately opposing Trump because, at the end of the day, they are aligned on many front or at least not unaligned enough.
You go from a priori defining the democrats as a party that both already knows public opinion, that enhact the optimal strategies to a point where there’s not even the notion of a better strategy, but you never draw the connecting between that and where we are now, historically and politically.
Because the DNC is essentially a dictatorship where the chair has all the power and zero accountability to anyone.
Seriously, the chair could write themselves a $500 million dollar check for consulting and it would be legal, they can do whatever they want and that is a huge problem.
So being mad at the DNC today for anything they did more than 3 months ago is like refusing to watch the new Batman movie because George Clooney's batsuit had bat-nipples on it.
No one is saying you shouldn't be upset at bad things that happened in the past. But holding a completely different group accountable for those past decisions doesn't make any logical sense.
No one working on the latest Batman worked on Clooney's nipple suit.
And no one running the DNC today, was able to make calls about what happened 3 months ago.
I'm sorry political change feels slow to the tiktok generation, but at least you seem to understand now.

We can worry about spelling later.
Going by your username I'm older than you, also I've never had a tiktok account.
But yes, I do speak somewhat fluently a foreign languadge, thank you for noticing!
I hope you realize you are furthering the impression of not being a particoularly intelligent person.
Have a nice day nevertheless.
There's this weird phenomenon where if an IQ difference is larger than 30 points, the person on the lower side becomes confused and belligerent, believing the other person is the problem because they keep pointing out flaws in what they're saying.
It's why the line for intellectual impairments is an IQ of 70. At 30 points difference communication is hindered.
Unfortunately I've taken an actual proctored Wechsler exam... This might feel new to you, especially if you're a full standard deviation above 100.
Statistically speaking, there's just not many times you'd run into someone more than 3 standard deviations above average. Like, lemmy world is the biggest instance, assuming an equal distribution the amount of people over 145 is single digits. You very well might never interact with someone two standard deviations above you again.
So don't feel bad, I get this a lot.
This is the first time I've been accused of having a low IQ for pointing out spelling errors tho, usually it's taking steps of logic for granted and the other person can't fill in the gaps on their own.
I don’t even know who this guy is, but getting angry won’t get you anything and violence will only get you killed.

Bernie and AOC just held the largest political rally in Iowa since 08 Obama...
If you think they can be doing more, everyone would love to hear what path is faster.
But we have the DNC and the Dem's most popular politicians doing a nationwide tour whipping up support and explaining why shit is fucked and how we can fix it.
Like, I just don't understand what more people want?
Not the result, but what they should be doing to fix things faster.
We had a rally. What more do people want
For them to fight for the people. Resist.
Resist
How?
You want Bernie to plate up and grab an AK?
Like, I just don’t understand what more people want? Not the result, but what they should be doing to fix things faster.
No it's not...
You said they should be doing more, but as specific as you can get is "resist". Which they're already doing.
If you can think of anything more than what they're already doing, please, for the sake of our fucking country share it with the class.
So what are Bernie and AOC doing besides screaming fight Trump exactly? We are almost a year in and they still present no plan. Except starting of every speed with Israel has the right to defend itself, apparently.
You would hope that politicians like them who are getting paid to do this stuff full time would have something more meaningful to say than we need to organize. They are the people who are supposed to present the plan. And they have no plan.
Their raison d'etre is preventing people from organizing around those who actually do have plans.
So what are Bernie and AOC doing besides screaming fight Trump exactly?
Going to red and purple districts and explaining how Republicans are fucking them over, and what progressives can do to fix it if they're elected in enough numbers.
We are almost a year in and they still present no plan.
It's been less than 4 months since Trump took office...
They are the people who are supposed to present the plan. And they have no plan.
They can not do anything without the numbers, which is why they're talking to constituents in districts most likely to flip and telling them to pressure their Republican representatives I to breaking against trump. Literally the only way we can do anything till midterms.
Like, y'all want something done today that will fix things today...
That's a drastic misunderstanding of how our political system works, and it shows that no one can articulate what they want done.
Like toddlers screaming for ice cream, you can't explain to them that you're currently on the way to get ice cream and the screaming ain't gonna make it happen faster.
Who elected in enough numbers? If we have enough DNC establishment ghouls it will magically change?
You are already ignoring the Dems passing Trumps funding bill. These people will not fight Trump.
the Dems
If you're lumping AOC, Pelosi, Schumer, and Bernie all in one group....
You could say "the Dems" are doing damn near anything at any given moment...
but getting angry won’t get you anything
Being angry is a prerequisite to the things you listed, and also, you forgot the most important item: Organize. There's simply no way America gets a happy ending without a general strike, and the work to make that possible starts now, right this second.

For comparison he shares a lot of policy views with AOC and Bernie, but they wanted to reform the Dem party by kicking neoliberals out of DNC leadership.
It was a long fight but we just accomplished it.
Piker doesn't care. And still thinks we should destroy both parties. Which makes zero sense to destroy a resource we just captured.
It would be great to reform our political system and do away with the two parties. But trying it now would be insane.
You think Bernie and AOC captured the DNC? Man I really wish I was still this naive. Waiting until this point is what's insane, sticking with the Democrats now after they did a game of chicken with their own voters over a genocide they were fully supporting is what would be insane. The reason democrats are a failed political party is because they have done nothing but align themselves more and more with Republicans. After 4 years of people screaming at Biden to stop being bipartisan and hang these fascists they campaigned on putting more republicans in the cabinet than Biden. Bernie and AOC are there to keep people like you happy and shut you up when you ask for more than crumbs from the party proper. It's working marvelously.
If you want to vote for republicans then do that but don't go around talking about how republicans are the bane of existence and then vote for the other party promising to make sure that half their choices are made by republicans like come on.
You dont seriously believe any of this party drivel do you? They are backed by the same billionaire interests and they only pass laws that are approved of by the 1% the graphs are available. Please stop telling people that we need to rally for the democrats. Democrats are the only hope FOR CAPITALISTS to hold onto power and continue exploiting us without scrutiny the same way they have been for 80 years.
If you thought shit was sweet before trump congratulations you were a victim of propaganda. It's never to late to wake up to reality.
You think Bernie and AOC captured the DNC?
Nope.
I think the movement they're at the front of lead to replacement of DNC voters who just voted in a no biased chair, which is all progressives need to get to the general.
If you thought shit was sweet before trump
Never said that, and I frequently and explicitly say the opposite...
I just wanted to make sure you weren't saying the DNC is run by Bernie and his ideological allies. Even if it was, Bernie is not the socialist voice of America that he claims to be, and his actions both historically and in the current day should tell you as much.
A progressive dnc doesn't fix the issues of consultants, it doesn't fix the moneyed interests, it doesn't fix lobbying, and it certainly doesn't help us get a socialist elected. Idk what the plan is. David Hogg isn't a socialist. The establishment dems are already attempting a coup because David Hogg dared to say they might have to consider fighting for something at some point in the future. He's barely progressive and the democrats proper are reacting like they got holy water thrown on them.
This is not the hope you seek. The true hope is within your community with the people who will actually show up and fight for you when there is no food left on the shelves. We're past waiting for the DNC to realize their role and take up the mantle to save America, they were given that opportunity and chose over and over to instead be the party that delivered us into collapse. Please, I'm begging you. Don't keep waving the flag for people who would sell your foundations from under you in seconds if given the chance. There are actual political movements that plan on giving power back to the people who deserve it: the workers. Help them. They don't believe the democrats will do what they're saying, why should you? Unionize your workplace, organize your neighborhood, canvass with dsa and see what a real progressive movement looks like. This bullshit the dnc is trotting out will be visibly farcical to you after having done work on the ground. I cant help much more than that, the answers will become clear when you surround yourself with actual goal oriented activists instead of democrat stooges.
I just wanna say: I'm not making judgements on you personally, more talking to the royal "you" as in whoever is still trying to align with dems. You dont seem like an idiot, I just think you've been mislead into believing a narrative that doesn't exist in reality. It's tough to break through that narrative without being a little abrasive so I apologize if anything I've said here came across as an attack on your intelligence or your morality. You are not my enemy, the corporate backed oligarchy is my enemy and the DNC is in lockstep with them. I cannot in good conscience allow people of high moral standing continue to be sheep herded into a party that exists exclusively to strangle outside perspectives and whitewash any kind of radical politics. I promise its not you personally getting me this animated. I believe we want the same things. I am just more aware of the fact that the DNC is still in opposition to the things both of us want, and I'm not willing to compromise with them.
A progressive dnc
It's not a progressive DNC, even tho it is the most progressive chair in 50+ years
It's a nonbiased DNC, and that's all progressive politicians have ever needed: a fair fight.
We’re past waiting for the DNC to realize their role and take up the mantle to save America, they were given that opportunity and chose over and over to instead be the party that delivered us into collapse.
You're thinking of the DNC as a single entity and not ~500 voting members...
Most of which had been there for a very long time and are now slowly dying off or less often retiring and giving their seat/vote up.
The true hope is within your community with the people who will actually show up and fight for you
Those are the type of people they've been getting replaced with, it's been a long process and has taken decades of a grass roots movement to accomplish.
I've been waiting for this since I was a kid and watched the DNC close ranks to protect Bill Clinton for lying under oath.
I'm gonna give it more than 3 months before declaring it a failure.
I’ll agree to give it another 3 months and see where we are
I mean...
The only way anything will change before midterms is if a handful of Republicans break from trump and flip the House or Senate.
That's why AOC and Bernie are touring red districts and telling them to contact their Republican reps.
It's very unlikely to work, but makes beating them in midterms more likely since the Republicans aren't helping their voters now.
So 3 more months?
Not trying to crush your hopes but it needs a longer timeline.
Personally I'm cautiously optimistic, but the midterm primaries is where we'll really know what Martin's DNC is like. But every sign so far has been a good one.

“I don’t care if rapes happened (on October 7th), it doesn’t change the situation for me at all.”
To not paraphrase, the point was that oct 7th was a less egregious act of violence than what Isreal had been doing and is doing currently.
So yea, it's fair to say that it doesn't change much if the oct 7th had behaded babies or if it had Palestinian gifting flower crowns to Israeli snipers martiring themselves while singing Imagine.

Considering that Israel does the equivalent of an October 7 against civilians in Gaza roughly every few weeks, yeah whether or not rapes happened on October 7th doesn't really change the overall situation.
To put it into perspective, the October 7 death toll is roughly 1,200. Since then, the death toll in Gaza has been around 40,000. No amount of rapes on October 7th will absolve Israel or change the dynamic.

You need two things to get a political movement going. First you need to reach a critical mass by creating public sympathy for your movement. This can almost only be done with peaceful protests like MLK. Violent resistance is too easy to demonize and shut down when people do not sympathize with your cause.
Then the critical mass needs to be turned into action, which is what Malcolm X did.
If you start off the movement too radically, it will never be able to reach critical mass.
That's just not how politics works in the US. Politics is a career, or in many cases a stepping stone to a career. They're not there to fight anyone, they're there to achieve their personal ambitions. They're not ideological warriors, they're white collar elites. They don't necessarily have any ideological commitments, and as such they will simply adopt whatever the ideological paradigm is at any given time.
I don't expect any politician to fight Trump, if doing so means compromising their career ambitions. If there's going to be a fight, it has to be fought by the people, not the politicians.

These fucking stooges go into congress and sit on their thumbs for decades at a time I guarantee that anyone on lemmy with a comment history bigger than 200 could argue for better positions in American politics than any congressional rep sitting in congress for the last 50 years. They're all spineless cowards. They need to be unseated and we need to replace them with real people who have jobs and fucking live in the world they have to make laws for. Congress pays a salary, I don't want to hear people talk about "oh I cant I have work." This is possibly the single most important political moment in American history and we need fighters on the front lines. The civil war started when a member of congress got up and BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF A SLAVER IN THE ROTUNDA. WE NEED THOSE PEOPLE RIGHT NOW.
Join dsa, go canvass for someone who is already running for local office, go find orgs that are doing mutual aid in your community and contribute to that effort however you can, fundraise for causes you care about within your community and get the people who are passionate enough to show up for fundraisers to turn into campaigners with you. Build a movement in your home town that cant be shaken by corporate media because you have your own news ecosystem that the people in your movement are all attuned to instead of billionaire owned corporate stations. This is the real work that has to be done if we actually want to fight the systems that have been corrupted, and I don't see anyone explaining that anywhere.
It isn't hard to start a movement it's hard to convince people that it's easy to start a movement. Plenty of Americans understand what is happening and are afraid. What they are afraid of is being the only one to stand up, don't let them be alone. Build a coalition, define your goals, make a plan, and execute it. Hearts and minds. Just remember that the ultimate goal of a fascist administration is to make people convinced that the only thing you can't do is organize and defeat it.
Definitely. No office should be more important than your local office. They are the only ones who will ever have an actual interest in representing you.
Even if you are someone like myself who wouldn't make a good actual candidate for a highly public office. Because of the stress and strains of having to mask Etc. Your time and resources can make all the difference to those local offices.
There's no better way to accomplish nothing, then waiting around for the national parties to come to your rescue.

Big fucking facts. It doesn't have to be all of us, but there are plenty of people I've talked to in my conversations that do have a grasp on politics and probably COULD convince people that they were better than the two parties. If there was ever a time to start running as republicans in deep red districts and just talking about socialist policies its now. People have no idea what politics are anymore.
For example: I'm a centrist, I believe in universal Healthcare and a jobs guarantee, I want a 90% tax rate on corporations, and social security should be funded from the age of 50 for all Americans. It's really easy. Words dont mean anything anymore. Tell your people what they want to hear and then get in office and fuck shit up. If fascists could do it why cant you?

These are the kind of activities typically covered under "outfitting" in U.S. law:
- Guided hiking/backpacking tours
- Guided fishing trips
- Guided hunting trips
- Guided horseback riding tours
- Guided kayaking/canoeing/rafting trips
- Guided wildlife viewing tours
- Guided photography/sightseeing tours
- Renting camping/backpacking gear
- Renting fishing equipment
- Renting hunting gear (e.g. blinds, tree stands)
- Renting water sports equipment (kayaks, canoes, rafts)
- Renting horses and related tack/equipment
- Renting photography/optics equipment
- Providing shuttle services for outdoor activities
- Catering and food services for guided outdoor trips
- Providing lodging and accommodation services for outdoor activities
- Operating ski/snowboard equipment rental shops
- Offering guided winter sports activities (skiing, snowshoeing, etc.)
- Providing guide services for off-road vehicle tours
- Operating retail stores selling outdoor gear and equipment
So I think in addition to fighting fires, they basically want to replace the park rangers they fired with prisoners.

We've been using slaves to fight fires for a long time.
I have read the bill from beginning to end- it's literally just a bill to increase employment of the US Forest Service fire fighting team. It has a section that also makes it so the Secretary of Ag has the power to expedite the hiring process. The part that is concerning adds a stipulation about how they are able to exercise that power.
E.g.: "DHA expedites hiring by
removing competitive rating and ranking, preferences for
certain candidates, and requirements to consider the top three
candidates."
I am not saying this is good legislation, I am just confused by the language, and have no idea what all this will impact.
ETA: Nvm, this legislation is fucked. It allows hiring prisoners for no pay.

70% of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division lawyers are leaving because of Trump's reshaping
The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division is in upheaval amid a mass exodus of attorneys as the Trump administration moves to radically reshape the division, shelving its traditional mission and replacing it with one focused on enforcing the president's executive orders.
Some 250 attorneys — or around 70% of the division's lawyers — have left or will have left the department in the time between President Trump's inauguration and the end of May, according to current and former officials.
It marks a dramatic turn for the storied division, which was created during the civil rights movement and the push to end racial segregation. For almost 70 years, it has sought to combat discrimination and to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans in everything from voting and housing to employment, education and policing.

Taiwan wants peace with China but needs tight defense — Lai
Taiwan's president, Lai Ching-te, says his country wants dialogue with China but still needs to prepare for war. Lai, who is marking a year in power, rejects Beijing's claim of sovereignty over the self-ruled island.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday said that while Taiwan was ready to have exchanges with China, it also had to keep strengthening its defenses in the event that Beijing decided to assert its claim to sovereignty over the island with military force.
His remarks came as Lai — whom China has called a "separatist" while rejecting previous offers he has made for talks — marked one year in office.
He said Taiwan would keep strengthening its defense capabilities, adding that the best way to prevent a war happening was to prepare for it.

Since 2015, Illinois has forbidden the investment of state pension funds in companies that engage in any form of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel.
At the same time, there may be pressure from the top to shelve the bill, given the pro-Israel billionaire and Democratic Governor JB Pritzker is an expected presidential nominee for the 2028 election, and will not want perceived anti-Israel movement within his state to hold back his campaign, Capital News reported.

US terminates $60 million in Harvard grants over alleged antisemitism
The US Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday that it was terminating $60 million in federal grants to Harvard University, saying the Ivy League institution failed to address antisemitic harassment and ethnic discrimination on campus.
US President Donald Trump's administration has frozen or ended federal grants and contracts for the university worth nearly $3 billion in recent weeks.
Since taking office in January, the Republican president has sought to use federal research funding to overhaul US academia, which he says has been gripped by anti-American, Marxist, and "radical left" ideologies.

Great idea if your goal is brain drain and total collapse.
- Drastically reduce immigration.
- Skyrocket the cost of imported goods, even things we can't produce here (tropical fruit) and things we can't quickly scale up manufacturing for.
- Attack education centers which results in the people who are here not getting the education needed to be valuable, skilled labor (doctors, engineers, programmers, etc).

Ok, here's a question for you:
Let's say Microsoft counters with "Our terms and conditions were very clear that this software should not be used in war/genocides/holocausts"
Is that good enough? Who's responsibility is it to check? Are vendors always supposed to keep tabs on their customers or is it a good enough excuse to say "naughty customer we told you not to do that"?
I'm not defending any actions here, but I always wonder if people want platforms that monitor and police everything or they value privacy and trust more.
Is that good enough? Who’s responsibility is it to check? Are vendors always supposed to keep tabs on their customers or is it a good enough excuse to say “naughty customer we told you not to do that”?
if you create a rule, be it like a law, or a thing in a license agreement; or like, parents telling kids how to behave... It needs to be enforceable. Which means there needs to be some mechanism for identifying people who violate it.
The obligation is on the vendor for ensuring their ToS's are complied with; and have mechanisms in place to validate that. just saying "well that's against our ToS" and expecting everyone to follow it is kinda like making a law that says "you're not allowed to think about the color blue."
and by the way, if you think Win 11 isn't telling MS everything you do; I got news for you. Now if win 11 or whatever tool they're using is reporting on what the [defense contractor with classified secrets] is doing, that's a different matter. But, it's probably not actually a rule, and that's probably some spin doc spining up the bullshit machine.

I get it - Fuck Israel, Fuck Microsoft.
But if MS says "Israel lied on their TOS and said that this AI was only for educational purposes". You'd prefer that they violate every student's privacy in case they were secretly working for Mossad.
No?
Israel lied on their TOS -> we remove access as they have been violating the contract. Again this doesn't need to deal with anyones privacy.
These contracts aren't with some university students though. They are directly with the Israeli military. And if they were with any universities in Israel, well these have close ties with the military including running logistics and IT infrastructure.
In a broader sense. These organizations are in violations of various laws and engaged in serious crimes. There is enough plausible indications that the Microsoft tools are also used for that. So by a simply logic of harm reduction Microsoft must terminate these contracts immediately. It does not require to establish evidence in either direction. The other party to the contract engaging in war crimes is all the evidence that is needed to terminate business with them.
We're not talking about Israeli educational institutions.
If you're going to have a rule, you need to have a way to enforce the rule. Which is why MS wouldn't put it in the ToS. That, and Israel wouldn't sign that contract anyway. Every contract is unique.
saying "oh it's against our ToS" is pure bullshit.
If you are selling military systems, "privacy" does not apply. In the same way if you are selling systems to illegally dump waste for companies, you can hardly claim that this is their "private" matter. It is common in many countries that selling certain chemicals known to be usable for producing illicit drugs or explosives requires the buyer to provide a credible declaration of intended use for a legitimate purpose.
In criminal law, if you are giving tools to commit a crime to someone who you know will commit a crime or is known to commit crimes, you are complicit and you will be charged. Again this has nothing to do with privacy. But even if it is not required, if someone comes into a gun shop, has all the legal requirements and asks the seller how many children can be killed with this or that weapon in 5 minutes, the seller absolutely will be complicit if he stills sells this person a weapon.
Now back to Israel. There is extensive reports about these tools being used to target people in Gaza for killing them. There is reports about these tools being used in a way to maximize the targets selected as "legitimate", to tweak numbers of "accepted casualities" to allow for more bombing and last but not least with "wheres daddy" to deliberately massacre an entire family of a target instead of only killing that target. This is just blatant murder.
Microsoft has the knowledge about it. They therefore have the duty to stop their complicity. To get back to the school shooter example. It will not be enough for the school shooter to sign a paper that he won't shoot up a school in the weapons shop. He made his intent clear and it is obvious that he will not be dissuaded by breaking laws.

If even a cm of NATO is invaded and not acted on the alliance is worthless. For each nations safety, they must act or be defenceless going forward.
There is zero chance Russia is ever getting away with that, especially after burning all their bridges in Ukraine.
There is zero chance Russia is ever getting away with that
Is there? Given the rather reluctant support of Ukraine, which is about just enough to keep them in the fight, I'm afraid that at least some NATO members would rather give away a symbolic chunk of land than start a military confrontation. And yes, that would be the end of NATO.
But Ukraine is not part of nato
They had security guaranties from the US and UK after giving up their nuclear weapons inherited from the Soviet Union.
nato members were not happy, they risked a larger scale war by attacking directly. The
They did and do not risk anything.
It became very clear early on, that Russia was all bark and no bite. Russia couldn't have escalated to an all out European war if they wanted to, while their main psuh was being shredded on a highway towards Kiv. The only option to do so would have been the nuclear one but Putin wants to be Tsar, not dead.
Also even by standards of international law (as if that would account to anything anymore) supplying all sorts of weapons to Ukraine is legal. Any so called red line Moscow drew in the sand has been crossed so far and nothing has happened.
Do you really expect Putin to pull the trigger if European troops enter the battle with the clear communication that they would restore Ukraine to its borders before 2014?
An active fight? Yeah, that’s not going to happen.
You don't understand russian culture and mentality. Although in your defence, this is relatively common.
They would very much be willing to conquer the Baltic nations if the opportunity shows itself. The russians are obsessed with colonizing the baltics.
The author that you referred to, does he speak russian? Estonian? Ukrainian? I am genuinely curious.
They would very much be willing to conquer the Baltic nations if the opportunity shows itself.
I very much understand that but there is no such opportunity for an all out conquest until NATO is no more.
The author that you referred to, does he speak russian? Estonian? Ukrainian?
I don't know.
Depends what you mean by NATO is no more. I can even imagine some scenarios where the end of NATO might make it less likely that they would invade. It all depends on the context.
My general point was that commentators in the west (and politicians and even the local) often treat russia as they want to see it, not how it is (i.e. based on historical fact and decades of quantitative and qualitative research on society in the current iteration of the russian empire).
At war for over a decade is a bit of a stretch.
The most direct confrontation was Turkiye shooting down Russian jets that flew into their airspace when bombing in Syria about ten years ago. During Azerbaidschans attacks on Armenia both NATO and Russia made sure to not get into direct contact. Nothing came out of it directly. The sabotages in Europe that are organized by Russia have been a thing since 2022, maybe late 2021 unless i missed some.
So is the US in Europe, South America, Middle East, Israel in all of the West, EU countries in Africa, China all over the world....
Trying to influence domestic policies in other countries is shitty, but it isnt war. Otherwise we are already in WW3 since many years.
Tents, shelters for fighter jets and warehouses for military vehicles show increased Russian presence near one of NATO’s newest members.
Oh no so scary, tents and shelters!
Rumours has it that the rare tank you see there is non operational too (or they would be in Ukraine waiting to be demolished).
Their bases have been about where the tent villages now are for decades. They're training grounds for new conscripts until they're moved to die in some ditch in Ukraine. Who knows why they're more active now, maybe Ukraine is getting pretty good to hit their targets deep in Russia so they need to move further away from the front line or whatever.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Finland, beyond the fact that our border just happens to be nearby. And should they actually try start an active war with NATO from there, these grounds are mostly in reach of Finnish artillery and our artillery is pretty damn efficient on what they do.

Right, it gets into Russia's navy problem, which they've had for centuries and have never had a very good solution. Murmansk is one of the few (only?) ports they have that can reliably get ships out to the Atlantic. Black Sea ports have to go through the narrow channel at Istanbul (controlled by a NATO country, Turkey), and then you have to go through Gibraltar (England) or the Suez Canal (Egypt) (and you'd have to go around Africa if you go that way).
St Petersburg and Kaliningrad are on the Baltic sea, which is surrounded by NATO countries now. Even before then, the narrow opening in the North Sea could be easily blockaded.
Everything else is too far away. The sheer size of the country is both Russia's greatest defense and their biggest headache.
See also, this Drachinifel video about the Russian Baltic Fleet during the Russian Japanese War, where the fleet traveled the long way around, nearly starts a war with England, shoots up a bunch of civilian vessels and themselves, only to be curb stomped by the fledgling Japanese navy once they finally got there:
Yeah, Czar Nicky Two was a bad ruler. Putin has made some boneheaded decisions, but he's a political genius next to Nicky.
I once told my wife "I love you more than Russia loves warm water ports" and they were absolutely smitten with the nerdiness. Which is why I married them.
This is why they invaded Afghanistan in the first place. Their next step after what they thought would be a quick toodly-doo over the Afghanis was presumably to take a piece out of Pakistan in order to get a warm water port on the Arabian Sea.
It's also worth noting that you lumped St Petersburg and Kaliningrad together somewhat, but they are vastly different. While St Petersburg has challenges getting to open ocean, it's not the full-on exclave that Kaliningrad is, completely surrounded on all sides by the baltic states. I'm sure you know all of this, so this is for folks that don't. It wasn't entirely clear from the way you worded it.
which was a ‘neutral’ border back then
There's quite a few unmarked graves along that border and immense effort from my countrymen to keep the border where it is. It hasn't been "neutral" for too long. And being prepared to keep that border where it is plays a part on why our president from a small country is on discussions with Ukraine, EU leaders and that orange clown across the pond today.
Is there a non hostile influence by foreign powers on domestic policies?
And by this logic we are already in World War III. Seems pretty calm still all things considered...

for context to non aussies, the coalition is our "second major party" (of two).
The Liberal Party is our conservative major party (yes we know), whom since 1980 has formed a joint coalition with The Nationals. Liberals ussually perform in urban areas and the Nats in regional.
Since a crushing defeat in the recent election to Labor (our centre left major party), many fingers have been pointed at previous Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton for destroying Coalition chances due to playing a Trump-like campaign and focussing on "culture-war" talking points rather than real world issues.
A little more detail on how big this is. Since 1980, the Liberals and Nationals have been so tied together that we very often call them "the Coalition". Our news media reports on election results by saying how many seats the combined Coalition has won. In the state of Queensland, the two parties are fully merged into the Liberal National Party, or LNP, and the term LNP is sometimes unofficially used to refer to the Coalition elsewhere. In federal politics, LNP members choose whether they sit in the Liberal party room or the National party room. Peter Dutton was a Liberal-aligned Queensland LNP member.
For Germans, you can kinda think of this as equivalent to CDU/CSU splitting, with the main difference being that instead of different states, the Nationals represent rural areas and the Liberals represent urban and suburban areas. But it's fuzzy and they do sometimes softly compete against each other.
Also quick note: they're called the Liberals because they ostensibly stand for individual liberty. Personal freedoms etc. But they've evolved into crony capitalism and conservative culture wars.

Laissez-faire economic policy is far more tied in with neoliberalism than classical liberalism, as is the conservative bent. American Libertarianism is effectively the farthest extreme to which you can take neoliberalism. Classical liberalism doesnt have a modern equivalent really in the US at this point.
It is interesting to me that many other countries dont utilize a perspective of neoliberalism in making these distinctions, considering neoliberalism is hardly an American-specific thing. Although America has taken it to the furthest extreme, in terms of having no social safety nets for people and whatnot. “If you fail its your own fault entirely, and has nothing to do with society at all” is very much a neoliberal tenet. Classical liberalism is far more balanced than that
It seems like many of these “liberal” conservative parties in other countries are just neoliberals in sheep’s clothing
The Liberal Party is our conservative major party
weirdly enough, the major conservative party in Japan is also called Jiyū Minshu-tō AKA Liberal Democratic Party

Interestingly, Labor has long been at odds with social progress due to it's strong alignment with the Catholic church.
Remember: It was quite literally Goldman Sachs(Malcolm Turnbull) we can thank for Gay Marriage in Australia.
Today they're both anti social progress, though Labor less so. The Greens are the only party trying to push the envelope anymore.
I doubt much will change. Much the same as the Greens funnel into Lab, Nat votes and support will still go to Lib.
There's very little to reach across the aisle with in terms of policy or party support. Unless Lab look at dropping Greens and trying to pick up Nats, which well they're politically not that unaligned.

Trump is doing exactly what Putin wants him to - getting the US out of Ukraine.
The US never was needed at the negotiation table because there are no negotiations. Russia wants Ukraine's land. Ukraine wants its border restored, and anything less is a loss - Russia's only "concession" is to stop attacking, for now.
Russia wants Ukraine’s land.
Needs it.
Also needs to reassemble the USSR because Russia on its own isn't viable economically.
At this point Putin has no choice but to keep the war going. His economy is sliding, and has been, and all that's propping it up is the switch to a wartime economy. Take that away and the whole house of cards collapses. So I don't give two shits what he says about anything regarding all this. He's stuck with no moves left.
Oh, and his population has been crashing for years. And now Russia is losing a solid chunk of healthy young men. Remember Putin creating a national holiday years ago? Everyone was to stay home and fuck. I'm not making this up. Haven't heard about it for a long time. Anyone?
