How Trump has turbocharged a Canadian province’s quest for independence | Lisa Young
For Canadians, there’s nothing new about a province contemplating secession. Two referendums on Quebec’s potential independence – in 1980 and 1995 – brought the country uncomfortably close to the precipice. Today, it’s not Quebec but the oil-rich western province of Alberta that is chafing under the constraints of Canadian confederation. US president Donald Trump’s tariffs and comments about turning Canada into the 51st state have set in motion a chain of political events that will probably result in a referendum on Albertan independence sometime in 2026.
Conservative political leaders in Alberta have traditionally stoked resentment of the federal government in Ottawa without crossing the line to advocate separation. The grievances are largely economic and in recent years have focused on environmental policies. The Conservative-led Alberta provincial government has portrayed these policies as hostile to the oil and gas industry, and consequently an attack on the province’s affluence and identity.
The current Alberta premier, Danielle Smith, has opened the door to a referendum by lowering the threshold for a citizen initiative to hold a referendum to a mere 10% of the votes cast in the most recent election. In practice this means that gathering just 177,000 signatures would be enough to put the measure before voters next year. Although Smith claims to want a united Canada, her actions have empowered separatists, who have busily begun collecting names of those willing to sign the petition.
How Trump has turbocharged a Canadian province’s quest for independence
At the very moment Canada needs to be united, Alberta has put the question of independence back on the table, says political science professor Lisa YoungLisa Young (The Guardian)

That's especially concerning because South Korea's population is aging at an extremely rapid rate, and they need what incoming workforce they have to be participating.
They had a TFR of 0.75 in 2024. A woman was averaging having three-quarters of a kid in her lifetime. A level necessary to sustain the population is about 2.1.
When the dream goes from being a turn of phrase to an accurate description of attainability, it's no shock that some folks just say fuck it. We're seeing it show up in a lot of places under various names but it ends out being the same generalized thing.

This just is Trump's 'negotiation' methodology.
Its either:
X is great, they're the best, nobody was ever like X, absolutely tremendous.
or
X is gonna do what we want, they have no choice, we'll make things very painful for them if they don't.
or
X has gone absolutely crazy, just awful, the most terrible things that have been done in terms bad things, they must pay!
... dementia riddled mob boss tactics.
The rhetoric is always 110%, but the underlying tactic just flips around like a weather vane in a hurricane... because Trump literally is not capable of long term, strategic thinking.
He's just good at bullying people.
tl:dr; Trump is almost always bullshitting and saving face at the same time, because he doesn't understand or believe in anything other than the appearance of wealth and power.
He is the manifestation of the id of the American ruling class, a ravenous, screaming toddler that only wants MORE, with none of the carefully crafted corpo-chic lingo that makes them seem intelligent and respectable.
Putin is a lot worse than Trump though. I can somehow imagine a future where the right person talks to Trump and convinces him to support Ukraine in a real way.
I don't see any other way out of this mess for Putin except his death. Best option would be some sort of a revolution.

However, my statement still stands. Even though one is worse than the other, does not mean that the less shit person is not shit. They're both assholes who wants to shit on every dick and pussy out there (ref Team America).

I think his unrealistic 24 hour plan was to give putin what he thought he wanted. Eg all the territory he's captured so far and assurances against nato action/withdrawal of some western personnel at nato border country bases. You know putin's public story.
He just didn't know putin's real objective. Maybe now he's getting a bit of an idea. He's too simplistic to fathom that there could have been an ulterior motive.

I hope not. For the first time in years, the discourse around Israel has shifted. Like, 2 weeks ago, Members of the CDU got grilled on their attitude towards Israel and its renewed attacks at prime time on national television. This is unprecedented. I really think there is a shift in public discourse on Gaza.

If a big boat sinks and it isn’t in the Suez or Panama Canal, does it even count? I want days of drama and CEOs pearl-clutching and revising quarterly expected earnings or whatever.
And it’s hazardous? This news just sucks. Not one ounce of comedy was on that boat.
Good thing it's surrounded by water.
Joking aside, if it didn't burst into flames right away then it's probably fine on the acetylene front. The main hazard of acetylene is just the insane flamability (explosive limits 2.5-100%). But it's also very soluble in water and isn't really harmful to the environment on it's own. There are actually bacteria that can use it as a food source. So the acetylene is just going to be quickly disapated by the wind and disolved into the ocean where it'll be broken down into harmless products.
The bigger concern is that, with that much calcium carbide reacting, there was likely fairly substantial amounts of phosphine and arsine produced as well. Those are both pretty damn toxic. Normally the amount of both of those produced in a calcium carbide reaction is fairly small but when there are several shipping containers of the stuff reacting then those normally trace contaminants are likely going to actually amount to something.

Trump’s Legal Strategy Has a Name
I feel this is a really important article. If you get hit with a paywall you can use try this link here: archive.ph/YVWxP
Donald Trump and his allies are attacking the court systems by doing things that they know are illegal and they know will get shut down by the courts but the things he's trying to do sound popular among his supporters. The goal is to erode support for an independent and fair judicial system. Andrew O'Donohue, the author of the article calls this authoritarian playbook "court-baiting".
The so-called "big beautiful bill" contains a hidden provision to significantly undermine the court system. That's why it's important you contact your senators and demand it's removed. You can consider using 5calls which includes a helpful script or finding their contact information on their senate website.
Please note that the 5calls script is only suitable for contacting Democrat senators in my opinion since it mentions Trump.
Here's a modified script that I suggest using especially for Republican senators but could be used for anyone.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].I'm calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose H.R. 1, the House budget reconciliation bill, especially the provision that limits the enforcement of contempt of court charges. This measure weakens our judicial system—the same independent courts our Founding Fathers envisioned as a critical check on governmental power. By diminishing the courts' authority, we risk undermining the constitutional framework that guarantees American liberty. Supporting this provision would be unpatriotic and contrary to the values we hold dear. I trust [REP/SEN NAME] to protect the rule of law and preserve the constitutional balance that has long safeguarded our freedoms.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Please note that the 5calls script is only suitable for contacting Democrat senators in my opinion since it mentions Trump.
I don't think it matters if you say trump or not. Your calls are just tallied by their office yay/nay for the bill and maybe the reason why, which depending on the script you read will be different. Just be very clear about what you want them to do (vote nay) and a reason or two why in a short sentence before going into the details.
And don't be afraid to say you disagree with something trump is doing. If you can articulate a specific thing you do not like that the president is doing then tell your representatives. They need to hear it, they do represent you afterall. Being afraid to speak out is playing into the administrations hands. They'd rather everyone just be too scared to speak out

It is entirely possible at this point that the Marshalls could be ordered to arrest a Trump admin lawyer, who has been deemed being in criminal contempt of court, or some other LE official that's been found to have committed a crime...
And then this person could then be defended by the Secret Service, or the other members of whichever armed LE group under the Executive branch...
We already have unnamed DOGE, ICE, DHS goons going around basically doing the reverse.
At somepoint, we could actually get an armed standoff or confrontation between two different groups of armed, federal personnel.
Its very uh... early 90s Russia, if you ask me.

Unnecessary: US Marshals Service is administered by Department of Justice of the executive branch headed by the president.
Why pretend the president couldn't simply pass down orders?
The mistake your making is looking at the subject. The courts won't do something unconstitutional. TRUMP will
So until the courts play the game of "no law" they HAVE to do that.
WE don't.
No, child, you are being petulant and spoiled. You want more treason and chaos because you are upset at the president. And you not only have every right, I am as well
But the answer isn't to destroy our government even more
It's to remove the administration before they do more damage. A private army run by people who can make any law without answering to civilian?
You are giving the government what they want. Mire thugs, less accountability, and more cash.
It's a foolish, poorly thought out proposal that creates vastly more problems
Now I am through being reasonable Bout this subject. If you do not know how the government works and why we as citizens need to stand and fight instead of the courts, then you are one of the issues.
I truly do wish you the best. I will not waste more time on this.
I don't care that they "wouldn't be the courts" - whatever that means. If they wouldn't be the courts, what would they be?
I do care that they act before we fucking die.
Kind of different.
Courts uphold laws created by Congress. Not the other way around.
Without their function of upholding the law, they cease to function as courts and, instead become another dictatorial arm of the government merely giving out edicts with no authority.. There's the whole giving courts private army, problems.
The government needs less of this, not more
The actual real world function of courts has always been as another arm of the government's authority. In the real world the interpretation of legislation is also part of the creation and execution of legislation. It's a continuum, that's always been how it works.
Courts are part of the government, not some divine body that exists outside politics.
Liberals act like the separation of powers isn't just something they made up. Separation of powers isn't real and it never has been and it can't be.
I understand and support your irritation and disgust at this administration
But this is not how the court works. They could , hire some contractors I guess, but they cannot unilateraly create a security service
If judges are being threatened by POTUS they need to issue an arrest warrant.

I was thinking that maybe the US could use three presidents - West, East, and Center, each heading up a major chunk of territory. SCOTUS could be expanded to have 50 justices, each state appointing a single justice to represent them on the supreme court. The presidents each could select a single head justice, whose job is to communicate the viewpoint of the executives, and to write up the conclusions that SCOTUS factions have reached.
That sort of thing should help maintain the intention of the Constitution, where branches - or rather, interests, constantly jockey against each other, thus being equal. The problem with our current politics is that too much power has been concentrated into the hands of too few people, essentially destroying the balance of branches.
West, East, and Center, each heading up a major chunk of territory
Fuck no. Don't lump us minnesotans in with basically exclusively red shithole states.
Yes that’s how it’s supposed to work. People like to point at Trump but Trump would not have been able to do this were it not for the fact that every president before him has given itself more and more power. He’s simply an opportunist.
This is also the thing Republicans have been harping about for ages. They don’t want to tear down the federal government because they want people to die or because they’re “fascists”. They want to tear it down because its current iteration of it has far more power than was ever intended when the constitution was drafted and it empowers and makes tyranny possible.
The New Deal needs to be replaced with something new that decentralizes power from the federal government while keeping the social nets that were established.
EDIT: for the non-historians among us, this was Ernst Röhm, head of the Nazi Brownshirts (SA), a paramilitary organization used to primarily cause havoc amongst the population and competing political parties, but also in charge of protection details for high ranking NSDAP officials, later replaced by the SS when Hitler had him murdered due to lack of trust.
I think that in the case of the judiciary's supreme court, having a huge amount of people would be a 'too many cooks in the kitchen' problem. The important thing is a diversity of viewpoints who can argue on the technical (and moral) merits of the topic. Each state should send their most capable justice who can persuade their peers.
The way I figure, such an expanded SCOTUS would naturally form four or five cliques of 10-20 members apiece, who work with head justices to articulate their viewpoints into a dissertation on the topic. These proposals are examined and held to a vote, with the weakest being removed from the running - at which point, a rewrite is done on the remaining proposals by aligned cliques, voted on, and repeated until only one remains. Head justices do not get to vote, unless there is an exact tie among rulings.
...honestly, it would be good if there was a scientific research institute, dedicated to trying out political concepts like this in a simulated setting. The big problem of theoretical political systems is that they typically have to be applied to real-world people, which causes no end of social chafing. Having an MMO or roleplay to research these things, may go a long way towards healthy implementations.
I personally don't like it, but that is because I am biased in favor of popular public voting and a term that is a decade long, plus age limits. IMO, we want our representatives in all branches to have a relatively short shelf life, so that they can change with the times. Justices were given life terms to insulate them from the need to defend their office and politics, but I have the impression that modern life moves too quickly for the timespan you proposed. The internet has more or less been around for 40 years, and much has changed in technology and society within that time frame.
To me, the ideal term and age cap is 10 and 50 years, respectively. While a 51+ year person would almost certainly still have a sound mind, they would likely have difficulty when it comes to relating with the younger members of society. Say, for example, sexting. We have (stupid) laws that treat minors as creators of CP pornography when they share dick pictures with each other, putting them on sex offender registries for life - but they could boink each other in person, and not be charged. This example is an intersection of changing technology and social norms, that an older justice might not grasp.
Anyhow, setting aside my bias: Your concept is fine, and seems to fall within line with how things have traditionally worked. 👍
They should. Some minimal physical protection may be needed to meet, consider, decide and publish a decision (nothing more) if things get really bad.
If they can modify the US Marshals service get independence from the DoJ, that seems reasonable.
The courts can take responsibility over their actions? They seem to be doing most things right. Even the SC seems to be making the constitutional decision a lot of the time.
It's the president that is stiring up his base against the courts when they rule he did something unconstitutional. And that happens almost every day.
The DOJ is subordinate to the Judiciary, regardless of what these assclowns are trying to cosplay.
The Judiciary is equal to Executive and Congress. That's just a fucking fact. A Federal Judges ruling has the same weight as any bullshit Executive Order Trump can crap out on paper.

Lawsuit: Wikipedia fired transgender worker who complained about harassment
A former employee of Wikipedia’s parent company has filed a federal lawsuit alleging she was fired after reporting her direct supervisor for gender discrimination and harassment.
The woman, Kayla Mae, was hired by the Wikimedia Foundation in November 2022, where she worked as a software engineer for nearly two years.
Her role allowed her to work remotely from Texas, and she was assigned to work on a team managed by Dennis Mburugu, a Wikimedia employee based in Kenya.
Within the first few months of her employment, she encountered problems with Mburugu, according to her complaint. Among other things, Mburugu asked her inappropriate questions about her sexual identity — she is a transgender female — and inquired about her medical history, Mae wrote in the complaint.

It started because you don’t understand how state vs federal government works, and that you assume every place in the US is the same because all you do is drink up the media like it’s the only facts that exist. Then you shit all over innocent people and think you’re the good guy.
Since we are shitting, maybe if your mind wasn’t so irreparably flawed you wouldn’t be getting off on the misfortunes of others so frequently.
Goodbye
It started because you don’t understand how state vs federal government works,
That was your claim, but I already explained that actually I do. Here we even learn about American democracy in public school, so don't project your own ignorance onto me.
Or you wouldn’t have thought the DMV in Florida represents the entire country.
Again, that's your flawed interpretation, the DMV is just an example of it.
Oh boy:
If you’re not a heterosexual rich white male, you feel the problems.
This was your own comment I responded to, So clearly you think it's important to your position yourself.
You used it in a couple of comments as you thought it was somehow a defense for your position.
Tell me how you don’t like gay people.
That was your response, and notice how that comment ended the discussion. Because it was too stupid to respond to.
I don't care if you are gay or not, but clearly it's an issue to you.
If your comment wasn't so laughably stupid, I'd find it offensive.
On the original source you can read about the author. And the site seem pretty legit to me.
But considering MSN is a copy of the original, I wouldn't consider it another source in this case.
But that's probably because you rushed it a bit. If you had found a true 2nd source, that would have been stellar.

Personally i wait and see how the institution responds and make my assessment then. Cool heads and all that.
There is a tendancy on the left to become reactionary - spot one bad actor and 'throw the baby out with the bathwater' by personally blacklisting a whole attached group.
While that might feel good and have some short term positive feedback with upvotes on a social post, its also great for the right wing too. They just have to highlight a single problematic incident and watch as their enemy platform/org/service is abandoned by leftist puritans. The same does not happen for right wing groups, as their users are far less likely to baulk over one or two issues, so they don't even need to worry about this attack method being turned inward - no blowback.
Also worth noting that Wikipedia and Archive.org are under constant attack by right wing extremists.
So it's way more likely that's what's going on.
Also most of these smear stories from troll farms get follow up comments in the threads they get posted in similar to this one.

North Korea detains three over warship launch accident, state media reports
Kim Jong-Un vowed to punish those found responsible for ‘criminal’ damage to new 5,000-tonne naval destroyer
North Korea has detained three people over an accident that occurred during the launch of a new warship this past week, state media reported early on Sunday.
Pyongyang has said that “a serious accident occurred” at Wednesday’s launch ceremony in the eastern port city of Chongjin for a newly built 5,000-tonne naval destroyer, in which sections of the bottom of the vessel were crushed.
Seoul’s military has said the ship could have been developed with Russian help, possibly in exchange for Pyongyang deploying thousands of troops to help Moscow fight Ukraine.

‘Roadmap for corruption’: Trump dive into cryptocurrency raises ethics alarm
The president’s hawking of $Trump memecoin has sparked a firestorm of criticism over potential influence buying
Donald Trump’s push to sharply ease oversight of the cryptocurrency industry, while he and his sons have fast expanded crypto ventures that have reaped billions of dollars from investors including foreign ones, is raising alarm about ethical and legal issues.
Watchdog groups, congressional Democrats and some Republicans have levelled a firestorm of criticism at Trump for hawking his own memecoin $Trump, a novelty crypto token with no inherent value, by personally hosting a 22 May dinner at his Virginia golf club for the 220 largest buyers of $Trump and a private “reception” for the 25 biggest buyers.
To attend the two events, the $Trump buyers spent about $148m, which will benefit Trump and partners, according to the crypto firm Inca Digital.

Assembly instructions for enzymes
In biology, enzymes have evolved over millions of years to drive chemical reactions. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPI-DS) now derived universal rules to enable the de novo design of optimal enzymes. As an example, they considered the enzymatic reaction of breaking a dimer into two monomer molecules. Considering the geometry of such an enzyme-substrate-complex, they identified three golden rules that should be considered to build a functional enzyme.

Danielle Smith is already to the right of the population and trying to do the David Cameron thing, basically. Hopefully it will backfire less destructively.

I'd go as far as to say that Twitter under Elon Musk functions effectively as an extension or an arm of the Trump regime. No one should be using Twitter, especially those in other countries who are at risk of foreign influence from the Trump regime.
That's why I'm calling on Canadians to boycott Twitter and urge institutions, business, universities, sports teams and celebrities to switch to Bluesky. Most websites have an about or contact-us section. Use that and urge them to boycott Twitter.
