I'm confused, has Microsoft lost favor with people? I was under the impression that the PS5 had no exclusives whereas Xbox was bending over backwards to get new storefronts and all these games on gamepass on launch day.

For the record I'm a PC Gamer, the only consoles I play are for Nintendo exclusives. So I am very much out of the loop on the situation.

It's true that the PS5 has basically no exclusives, but the PS5 also has over double the market share of Xbox. Plus, porting to Xbox is a huge lift since the hardware differences between the Series X and S is like making two ports. It sounds like this studio would rather focus on a single good port to reach as many players as possible before moving to other platforms.

Also, Microsoft definitely has been losing favor recently after mass layoffs (even for studios that have been successful like Virtuos) and multiple game cancellations like Perfect Dark (shuttered the whole studio) and Everwild. Zenimax supposedly had a game in early dev that Phil Spencer could barely put down, but the game was cancelled a few months later.

Some folks are now wondering what the point of them buying up all these studios has been, if they're just going to cancel their projects years later after giving a thumbs up the whole time. From what I've read, it seems like this has been more so Microsoft fucking over Xbox to divert resources towards investing in AI 🤮

It's still up in the air for now, but Microsoft has been shifting away from games for a bit now. It's looking like there may not be a dedicated Xbox console ever again, instead they look to be going down a different path with their recent announcement that "everything is an Xbox"

As far as I know, the PS5 had way more exclusives that the equivalent Xbox console. Sony just started releasing PC versions of many of those exclusives a couple of years after release because they like money, which took away their exclusive status. I see this as a good thing as exclusives aren't good for anyone other than the console maker.

PS5 has plenty of console exclusives, they’ve just been porting them to PC after awhile which technically makes them no longer “exclusives”, even though the only console you can play them on are PlayStations.

And Nintendo JP says that “Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 cannot be remotely located, their users remotely identified nor disabled over the Internet” (tweet in Japanese warning people against accidentally losing or getting their consoles stolen over summer vacation)

But I bet it is more like “Nintendo won’t disable them remotely even if people report ones stolen to them with serial numbers and police reports”, but they’ll happily do so if they caught you using the console in an unapproved manner in their eyes.

Someone play for 5 minutes with a mig switch a legit dump of their own, legally purchased game, just for convenience, to have multiple games on the same cart? The console is now almost useless. You can't play any digital games that you purchased with real money, and physical games can't get any update. Game requires a 20gb day one patch to be playable? Though luck buddy, go to buy a new console!

My “capsule”, Vigilia, is self-hosted, and has been since its inception. It used to run on a disused Macbook Pro running Fedora Server, under our TV at home, but since then I have become much more confident in using OpenBSD. It used to run on a little Python CGI script I wrote, which also started to feel too bloated and complex, with too many bells and whistles that I frankly had no need for. It was time to make a change, so I replaced the old Macbook with a Raspberry Pi, and Fedora with OpenBSD, and then took my time to figure out a new “status quo”.

I wished to create a more Unix-minded stack. The more I have been using OpenBSD and Unix systems the more I have been sold on the “everything is a file” philosophy, as well as opting to use internal tools as much as possible rather than reinvent the wheel on my own. That is to say, I’d much rather work with simple scripts and shell commands than write complicated and buggy code.

So with that in mind, here’s the stack that I settled on after a some trial and error:

1. Hardware

I have absolutely no intention to expose our home IP address via DynDNS or similar. However, I like to be in control of my data as much as possible: ideally as little of my data should be hosted on “someone else’s computer”. If I can’t unplug the hard disk and put it in a drawer, I can’t guarantee it’s security from a hack.

So Vigilia is actually two servers. The server with the actual data is at home, in running on a Raspberry Pi 4B. But as a “public front” vigilia runs a reverse-proxying gemini server on a standard VPS over at OpenBSD.amsterdam.

2. Network setup

I will not go into the intricacies of the dual-wan setup in this post I have at home; but to keep things connected to each other I am using Tailscale to tie the servers together in a Virtual LAN. This is incredibly handy because they get to have easy to remember static IP addresses, all over an encrypted channel.

So here’s the rough idea:

Vigilia.cc’s DNS records resolve to the OpenBSD.Amsterdam VPS running gmid
VPS and home server both run tailscale
VPS reverse-proxies incoming gemini connections to home server

3. Gemini server config

Both the VPS and the local server run [url=https://gmid.omarpolo.com]gmid[/url]. It’s a fast and simple gemini server that mirrors OpenBSD’s httpd; which means it is very easy to configure, it is stable and secure. It can run in chrooted environments, and as its own user, so it’s just a Good Thing all over. Most importantly, it can relay and reverse-proxy TCP connections with sni fields intact, which is something for example OpenBSD’s relayd, built primarily for HTTP, does not do.

My gmid config files look something like this:

This above allows to listen for connections to vigilia.cc:1965 and forward them to HOME_SERVER:2965. So thus the homeserver has the following configuration:

4. Getting the files to the Server

Because I am lazy I want to edit files locally and I want them to magically appear on my capsule. So I am using [url=https://syncthing.net/]syncthing[/url] to copy things over automagically from DESKTOP:~/public_gemini to HOME_SERVER:/var/gemini.

Syncthing runs most reliably as my own user, I found. To do this it is best to follow the documentation for the Syncthing OpenBSD package — but basically it involves starting it via the user’s crontab with the “@reboot” directive. But as it runs as my own user, I need to set the permissions properly. HOME_SERVER:/var/gemini is owned by the _gmid user in the _gmid group so I also added MYUSER on both machines to the same _gmid group, and made sure MYUSER has write access:

Then I set up syncthing on HOME_SERVER. As it is running headless, I needed to access the web interface, which I achieved via SSH tunneling:

This way I could open a browser on DESKTOP and access the server’s Syncthing settings.

So here are the settings:

On the DESKTOP:

Syncthing web interface -> Add folder
Folder path: ~/public_gemini
Folder label: Gemini files (or something)
Ignore patterns: “*.sock” (Unix sockets might confuse the poor thing)
Sharing: HOME_SERVER
Pause syncing for now

On HOME_SERVER:

Establish ssh tunnel to HOME_SERVER as described above
Open remote Syncthing webinterface on DESKTOP: localhost:9999
Accept the incoming share request for “Gemini files” from DESKTOP; but point it to /var/gemini
Folder path: /var/gemini
Folder label Gemini files
Advanced: UNTICK “Wach for changes” because OpenBSD doesn’t seem to allow Syncthing to poke around in /var with those various Go modules and you’d just get errors, like I did
Check the Ignore patterns — if it didn’t synchronise “*.sock” then specify it manually

On DESKTOP:

Unpause syncing

Now any file you write into DESKTOP:~/public_gemini will sync across to HOME_SERVER:/var/gemini. Yay!

6. Setting up automatic static site generation

Now if you are content to maintain your capsule manually, you are done. As I said I am lazy so I want my little “ssg” script, Lumen, to create index pages for each directory for me. Lumen, I promise, will be made available once I tidy it up.

Lumen basically lists all files recursively and generates an index.gmi for each directory. This means that Lumen has to be re-run each time the folder changes. OpenBSD is acquiring some degree of file watching natively.¹ However [url=https://openports.pl/path/sysutils/entr]entr[/url] already exists in ports.

It took a bit of tweaking but basically here’s the command I ended up using, adapted from one of the examples provided in the entr manpage:
$ while sleep 0.1; do find /var/gemini/vigilia.cc/* | entr -nd python3 /var/gemini/cgi/lumen.py -d /var/gemini/vigilia.cc; done
What it does is, in a loop it recursively lists all files every 0.1 seconds in /var/gemini/vigilia.cc, and feeds the output to entr. Then entr runs with -n to specify a non-interactive session (in interactive sessions it also responds to e.g. keystrokes and tty changes – so to be safe, I don’t want that); and with -d to specify it should be looking for changes in the parent folder of any changing files. The looping and the -d directive were added because sometimes I ran into issues when a file got deleted: entr just quit because it could not find the removed file in a “stale” file list it was provided on launch. Lumen needs a -d argument as well to specifiy which directory it needs to work on.

7. System config

Because there are a few other servers like “auld.vigilia.cc” also running on the home machine (the configs for wich aren’t reproduced above for brevity’s sake) and because those rely on a number of CGI scripts I have to start them on launch. I ended up using supervisord for these. Supervisor is a cool little daemon for launching things. I could use rc but supervisord allows me to specify a few extra bits more easily, like redirecting output to syslog and other things.

So for HOME_SERVER, here is my supervisord configuration:

There are other directives that start the CGI scripts for “auld.vigilia.cc” in the config, omitted here.

Note that you can specify “priority” to control in what order you want the scripts to run. I first want the gemini server to run (100); then I want it to run the CGI scripts (101 — left out of the above example); then I want to run the static site generator’s watcher (102). Notice I am telling explicitly it to run /bin/ksh with a command specified in -c; this is because simply feeding it a complex command confuses supervisord, as I discovered.

One nice feature of supervisord is that it can redirect both stderr and stdout to syslog, so any commands and processes supervisord runs will have their output sent to /var/log/messages, neatly tagged and organised.

Conclusion

So there you have it — my Gemini stack from start to finish. It was a really fun experiment to start to use OpenBSD, instead of reinventing the wheel, or relying on some monolithic CGI scripts. You can do quite a lot with just system internals and a few packages.

Edit: Just tried it. I don’t see the appeal to be honest. A messaging app to me is just that, an app to message people. If I wanted social media to post updates of whatever, I’d use pixelfed or mastodon. The author says the advantage of Signal is the granularity of the audience of your story. IIRC, facebook and the like allow you to restrict down to specific people you want. Obviously the corporate surveillance part is a no-brainer, but if you’re specifically talking about audience filtering, it’s no different.

IMO, instead of social media features, they should try to copy some Telegram features instead (sticker packs, automation, etc.) to make it more enticing to regular users. Make it a full feature chat app instead of a social media app like instagram.

I use Signal the way I want Social Media to be... I share things with specific people who I think will appreciate what I'm sharing, and if I ever want to share something with everyone I chat with on Signal, then I will use Stories. I almost never use Stories because I rarely ever want to share something with everyone, however a few weeks ago I saw that someone I used to work with had posted a Story. He was breaking ground on building his new house. He has spent the past decade living extremely frugally at a campground, saving all of his money toward the goal of building a house, and now he's begun building. It was EXACTLY the type of thing that I think we could all agree is what Social Media should be for, and since he isn't on facebook or instagram, he used Signal.

I'm curious as to why Lemmy rarely shows up in search results on the main internet even if there is a post related to the search input. I've only ever seen a Lemmy result if Lemmy is specified. Is this because we're still relatively small or some other reason?

From an SEO perspective, federation looks almost exactly the same as spam unfortunately. A bunch of websites with very similar content that all link to each other but aren’t linked to externally very much.

This person gets it! After I launched my website/blog it showed up immediately on google, even though it's content is directly pulled from my Lemmy instance. Which has been running much longer than the site, and cannot be found using search engines.

Depends on the search engine you use. I started giving Kagi a try and it has options to increase visibility of fediverse content in your searches.

I'd guess it's a mix of fediverse being a poor fit for ad-oriented SEO and relatively low adoption.

In this forum probably it is not necessary, but in case you are new on this... HR is there to protect the company and just the company. If HR finds that getting rid of you is easier than of the problem you are complaining about, for the good of the company, they will boot you out. It is not been mean, it is for what they are paid for.

from what I hear historically yes, but japan has basically been joining the rest of the world with it's practices.

IE old days of japan, were the common pitched story "worker/employee loyalty, 2 way street", and culturally both firing and quitting were looked at so negatively on either side that when an employee wasn't working out, there were 2 practices oidashibeya and madogiwazoku.

Madogiwazoku came first, and basically it was more or less "we have nothing for you anymore, but it's worse to fire you than have you on staff, have a comfortable room with a view and just sit around reading the newspaper for your shift.

Oidashibeya was the more hostile version of it. In short, it's we hate you, we want to fire you, but we can't do that, so we'll put you in the smallest most uncomfortable spot we can, with no assignments or options to do anything. Fingers crossed you'll chose to quit.

But like the rest of the world, companies stopped giving a crap, had more regular layoffs etc... and as a result employees stopped trusting it.

I get that cultural change is happening but how much better, if at all, are these employment numbers compared to the Japanese norm? I very much doubt that the touted “great” employment of the article is that great if we didn’t compare it to entire other cultures. Maybe Sony’s Japanese employment would be a good comparison?

WordPress is one of the most widely used platforms for publishing content online. It’s often criticized as an insecure platform, but in reality WordPress itself is secure – it’s the many plugins, unmaintained or poorly developed, that generate significant vulnerabilities.

Many people host WordPress on Linux, often using Docker. While this is a valid approach, there are excellent alternatives – sometimes even better ones – for getting your WordPress site online in a secure, reliable, and updatable manner. The goal is to make the web a safer place and avoid the computing monoculture that increasingly pushes toward uniformity of solutions and setups – an attitude that I believe is harmful even when the solutions are open source.

For this type of setup, therefore, I’ll describe h

For this type of setup, therefore, I’ll describe how to accomplish everything using FreeBSD. The jail separation, performance, and ZFS versatility – all reasons that support this choice. This guide will serve as a foundation – everything will work at the end, but it won’t cover all possible combinations or configurations.

We’ll be using BastilleBSD, which supports both ZFS and UFS. While FreeBSD’s base system has everything needed to create and run jails, BastilleBSD is incredibly useful for managing them. Since it’s written in shell script and has no database dependencies, management and backups are straightforward. Furthermore, moving jails becomes extremely simple – either by using the bastille command directly or by copying the files (or datasets, if you’re using ZFS).

BastilleBSD also supports templates, but for this tutorial, we’ll perform the operations manually to understand each step.

First, install Bastille:
pkg install bastille
Next, run the setup process:
bastille setup
Now, bootstrap the desired FreeBSD release:
bastille bootstrap 14.3-RELEASE update
With that, BastilleBSD is ready to go.

Creating the Jails

Now, let’s create the jail that will contain Apache, PHP, and WordPress:
bastille create apache 14.3-RELEASE 10.0.0.254 bastille0
Note: This command will only create and assign an IPv4 loopback address. For IPv6, the simplest solution is to assign an address for the jail directly to the host’s interface. To do this, note an available IPv6 address and assign it to the jail. For example, if the host’s network interface is vtnet0:
bastille edit apache
Add the following lines to the configuration file:
ip6 = new;ip6.addr = "vtnet0|2001:0DB8:1::443/64";
Restart the jail:
bastille restart apache
Next, let’s ensure that connections to the host’s ports 80 and 443 are redirected to the apache jail:
bastille rdr apache tcp 80 80bastille rdr apache tcp 443 443
Now, if using ZFS, let’s create a dedicated dataset for WordPress and mount it in the jail. The reason is simple: decoupling the Apache jail from the WordPress directory will allow for updates, rollbacks, etc. of the Apache jail without touching the WordPress files. I assure you that, in the long run, this approach will save many headaches.
zfs create zroot/wordpressbastille mount apache /zroot/wordpress/ /usr/local/www/wordpress nullfs rw 0 0
Now, let’s create the jail that will contain MariaDB:
bastille create mariadb 14.3-RELEASE 10.0.0.253 bastille0

Configuring the MariaDB Jail

Access the MariaDB jail’s console:
bastille console mariadb
Once inside, install the MariaDB server:
pkg install mariadb118-server
Enable and start the mysql-server service:
service mysql-server enableservice mysql-server start
Now, access the MySQL command line to set up the WordPress database:
mysql
Execute the following SQL commands (you should use more secure user, password, etc.):
CREATE USER wp@10.0.0.254 IDENTIFIED BY 'password';CREATE DATABASE wordpress;GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON wordpress.* TO wp@10.0.0.254;FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Exit the MariaDB jail console to return to the host.

Configuring the Apache & PHP Jail

Now, let’s configure the apache jail. First, access its console:
bastille console apache
Inside the jail, install PHP and all the necessary extensions. We won’t install WordPress from the FreeBSD package – while it’s updated and maintained, I prefer to manage dependencies manually. It will be easier to manage updates in the long term, such as changing PHP versions, etc. At the time of writing this article, for example, the WordPress package depends on PHP 8.3 while I prefer to use 8.4.
pkg install php84 php84-bcmath php84-bz2 php84-calendar php84-ctype php84-curl php84-dom php84-exif php84-fileinfo php84-filter php84-ftp php84-gd php84-gettext php84-iconv php84-intl php84-mbstring php84-mysqli php84-opcache php84-pcntl php84-pdo php84-pdo_mysql php84-pecl-imagick php84-phar php84-posix php84-readline php84-session php84-shmop php84-simplexml php84-soap php84-sockets php84-sodium php84-tokenizer php84-xml php84-xmlreader php84-xmlwriter php84-xsl php84-zip php84-zlib
Next, install Apache:
pkg install apache24
Modify /usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf to enable the required modules. Uncomment or add the following lines:

Enable and start the Apache service:
service apache24 enableservice apache24 start
To optimize performance, enable PHP-FPM to listen on a socket. Modify the /usr/local/etc/php-fpm.d/www.conf file.

Comment out this line:
;listen = 127.0.0.1:9000
And add these lines:
listen = /tmp/php-fpm.socklisten.owner = wwwlisten.group = www
Now, we need to configure Apache to use PHP-FPM correctly. Create the file /usr/local/etc/apache24/Includes/php-fpm.conf and add the following:
<FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler proxy:unix:/tmp/php-fpm.sock</FilesMatch>
Restart Apache for the changes to take effect:
service apache24 graceful
It’s good practice to copy the production PHP template to the final, modifiable php.ini file, which can be customized with the required options and limits:
cp /usr/local/etc/php.ini-production /usr/local/etc/php.ini
Make any desired changes now (or later), then enable and start PHP-FPM:
service php_fpm enableservice php_fpm start

Installing WordPress

Navigate to the web server’s root directory:
cd /usr/local/www
Download and extract the latest version of WordPress:
fetch wordpress.org/latest.zipunzip latest.zip
Set the correct permissions:
chown -R www:www wordpress/
Now, create an Apache virtual host configuration file at /usr/local/etc/apache24/Includes/wordpress.conf – be sure to modify the “example.com” with your own real domain name:

Finally, restart Apache one more time:
service apache24 graceful
The server will now respond on port 80 with the specified hostname, but this is absolutely not optimal or recommended. It’s therefore appropriate to generate a certificate to enable HTTPS.

For a simple solution, I recommend installing certbot with the Apache plugin to manage everything through Apache:
pkg install py311-certbot py311-certbot-apache
In order to automatically renew the certificates, add this line to /etc/periodic.conf:
weekly_certbot_enable="YES"
And, once installed, generate the certificate:
certbot --apache -d example.com -d www.example.com
You can now proceed to connect to the specified URL and begin with the WordPress guided installation, remembering the authentication and database details (the host, in this example, is 10.0.0.253 – not localhost, since we installed it in a dedicated jail).

Congratulations, your site is installed and operational. Ready to receive content for publishing. It’s exposed on IPv4 and IPv6, with HTTPS (and automatic certificate renewal, managed directly by FreeBSD) and separated from the database.

Generally, I prefer to add an additional jail with a reverse proxy. This way it will be possible to install different software in different jails, ensuring that the reverse proxy “routes” requests correctly. I’ll explain this procedure in a future article.

Es ist, als würde ein Architekt Fundamente als „nice to have“ betrachten.

Das Absurde: Ein Tool warnt explizit vor seinem Missbrauch, und die Reaktion besteht darin, es genau für diesen Zweck zu verwenden. Diese Realitätsverweigerung wird unter dem Label „Vibe Coding“ romantisiert.

„Vibe Coding“ ist ein Euphemismus für planlose Nachlässigkeit. Der Begriff suggeriert intuitive, kreative Arbeit, versteckt aber den Verzicht auf methodische Sorgfalt und professionelle Standards. Diese Umdeutung macht Unfähigkeit zur Tugend.

Die Mechanik ist simpel: Komplexe Systeme werden durch unzuverlässige Tools versteckt, während Nutzer diese Vertuschung als Befreiung von der Notwendigkeit interpretieren, die zugrundeliegenden Systeme zu verstehen. Das Ergebnis: Kritische Infrastruktur wird von Leuten verwaltet, die deren Funktionsweise nicht begreifen.

Wie verblendet muss man eigentlich sein, um trotz offensichtlicher Ahnungslosigkeit ein Softwareprodukt bauen, betreiben und kommerzialisieren zu wollen – wenn man nicht mal die eigene Produktionsdatenbank schützen oder ein Backup erstellen kann? Diese systematische Selbstüberschätzung ist charakteristisch für Dudes, die glauben, sie können trotz Inkompetenz die Welt beherrschen. Das machen sie natürlich, um Geld zu sparen – an Menschen. Menschen gehen woanders hin, wenn du ein scheiß Chef bist oder deine Infrastruktur eine Katastrophe. Vibe-Coding Tools hingegen lügen dich nur an. Diese Tools werden zu Ausreden-Generatoren: Anstatt kompetente Entwickler zu bezahlen, wird die eigene Unfähigkeit an Systeme delegiert, die selbst vor ihrer Unzuverlässigkeit warnen und inkompetent sind. Das Ergebnis sind Geschäftsmodelle, die auf systematischer Verantwortungslosigkeit basieren.

Ich bin selbst kein großartiger Entwickler. Aber selbst mir ist klar, dass man so definitiv NICHT entwickelt. Wer seine Produktionsdatenbank nicht vor seinem eigenen Staging-System schützen kann, sollte keine Software entwickeln. Wer KI-Tools verwendet, die explizit vor ihrem Missbrauch warnen, disqualifiziert sich selbst. Ihr setzt mich ja auch nicht in eure Firma und lasst mich an der Datenbank und dem Produktivsystem herumspielen.

Beim Coden und Technologie betreiben geht es nicht um „Vibe“, nur weil einige Gruppierungen, die sich um Tools und Infrastruktur kümmern, einen Vibe haben. Die Katzenohren-Nightcore-Emacs-Fraktion ist genauso ein Klischee wie die Furry-Community – letztere betreibt faktisch kritische Infrastruktur. „All modern communication would collapse if about 50 people, most of which are furries, decided to turn their pager off for a day“, formuliert ein Tweet pointiert. Die Furry-Community ist überproportional in der IT-Branche vertreten, von Apple über Google bis Amazon arbeiten sie in Schlüsselpositionen. Der entscheidende Unterschied zu pseudo-professionellem „Vibe Coding“: Diese Leute setzen voraus, dass man direkt mit dem Code arbeitet, die Maschine versteht und bewusste Entscheidungen trifft. „Vibe Coding“ ohne fundierte Kenntnisse ist keine Innovation – es ist Kapitulation vor der Komplexität moderner Systeme. Und diese Kapitulation gefährdet kritische Infrastrukturen unserer digitalen Gesellschaft.
