"But our corporate donors"

That's what makes it complicated, nothing else. DINOs keeping their own pockets lined.

in reply to A_norny_mousse

When a 3rd party actually wins, and the Democrats vecome the 3rd option, i wonder - where will the donors go?

I’m not enjoying the mental boner that was supposed to encourage such tattling on a grandiose scale.
Frankly, I am let down and hurt.
I need more.
C’mon, ya’ll are better than this.

in reply to Whats_your_reasoning

Bro if you're flying in restricted airspace near govt buildings you know what happens. You get intercepted by a fighter jet and either have a friendly escort out of the restricted area or you make friends with a missile and get obliterated.

I would not recommend trying to find out which will happen.

On a related note:

I've been wondering if drones could be adapted to essentially act as glide bombs that could operate without direct control input. Those probably would get around most protections especially if they had a glide slope that they'd stay on if their systems were jammed electronically. Like they get launched, fly to whatever altitude they need to be at to take a long glide down, and just go for pre programmed coordinates.

That's probably something the war in Ukraine has either made a thing or it was tried and found to be dumb but I've not done research on it.

It's not like civilians are gonna get their hands on true missiles and launch systems. But civies could find a way to put together some drones packed with explosives pretty easily I imagine.

in reply to LePoisson

I think you're right about Ukraine doing such a thing. IIRC they used drones to destroy some Russian supply depots a month or two ago. Though I think those were cabled? Which I had never heard of until then, but hey, if it works it works.

The Madagascar pochard was actually thought to be extinct for 15 years until rediscovered in 2006 when just 22 birds were found at a remote lake. Their population crashed because rice cultivation and introduced fish destroyed their habitat. Conservation teams have been raising ducklings and creating artifical floating islands for them to nest safely. Pretty amazing comeack story for a species on the brink!

HRW || Mali: Army, Wagner Group Disappear, Execute Fulani Civilians

Forcing children to make weapons of war, The Rubes idol nation right there.
in reply to FactChecker

Sending in troops without proper equipment, needing to change recruitment policy, attacking the enemies homefront (civilians), children making weapons on the assembly line. Their special military operation looks a bit like major power about to lose WW2.

Please let it be this that brings him down.

Not that I’m picky.

US Announces Leaving UN Cultural Body UNESCO

in reply to FactChecker

I bet he asked for Mar A Lago to get heritage site status and they laughed at him so he’s getting revenge by pulling the US out.

Based on this chart, staying in the subway is safer than going up into the city.
in reply to sunbrrnslapper

Your boyfriend probably wont kill you in front of witnesses on the subway. He might if he catches you with someone else in his bed.
in reply to silence7

Much more likely the murder was something else. Out of the 387 murders in NYC in 2024, 312 of them were men.

So that's about 4 out of 5 murders being men/boys

Women are a lot more likely to be murdered than men by their domestic partner, but men are far more likely to be murdered on the street.

“Homicide, US, 5.9” yikes… and that’s just the national average… I think MS and several other states are much higher

The court’s decision won’t be legally binding, so if they don’t find for the plaintiff nations it will be hilarious

This was supposed to distract the masses. Now she is screwing it all up. Maybe she needs a deport - Trump
in reply to Lucky_777

Honestly that’s the best way to keep the heat on trump. Anything he tries to do to distract, spin it back and make it about Epstein.

Or pull a Klobuchar and find a trending topic and spin that about Epstein.

It’s like when Boris Johnson would do weird shit to try to pollute SEO from having bad news about him circulating. Except in reverse.

So, again, what are they trying to argue here? The only environmentally responsible option is to leave Gaza destroyed?

From the study itself (4. Discussion & 5. Concluding remarks), this is not what I got. On the contrary, it seems to me like they try to make some calculations/estimations/evaluations so that this is something that takes place.

Ukraine moves against independent anti-corruption bodies

cross-posted from: lemmy.zip/post/44500793

Lawmakers voted on Tuesday in favour of legislation that would, in effect, eliminate the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (Nabu) and its partner organisation the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (Sapo), according to four lawmakers and officials familiar who spoke with the Financial Times during the vote.

The move to bring Nabu under executive control is the latest in a series of manoeuvres against pro-reform activists and anti-corruption campaigners that have prompted warnings of creeping authoritarianism in the president’s wartime administration, raising concerns among Ukraine’s western allies.

in reply to Lemmyoutofhere

Yup.

Keep in mind that this is positive for foreign business interests like the ones that would get to mine those minerals, or foreign Big Ag that's buying up farmland. All of those would have easier time to acquire more of those resources for cheaper and extract higher profits, offloading more negative externalities on the majority of Ukranians.

Also accession to the EU would require reforms in the opposite direction from this. The vested interests making these changes are making Ukraine's EU prospects more difficult.

Century-old dam under strain as floods increase in US and federal funds dry up

Trump axes key infrastructure funding while more than 18,000 Ohio properties face flood risk as ageing dam buckles

More than 18,000 properties that sit downstream of a series of a century-old Ohio dam are at risk of flooding over the next three decades, according to climate data, as the Trump administration continues to roll back investments that would aid in keeping the waters at bay.

In a part of the US that’s largely flat, the view from above the Huffman dam in south-west Ohio is rare.

From the bike trail atop the dam, the shimmering lights of downtown Dayton appear to the south. Cargo planes from a nearby air force base circle overhead and water from the 66-mile-long Mad River gushes underfoot.

But the dam serves a far more pressing purpose: holding back up to 54bn gallons of water – enough to fill 82,000 Olympic-size swimming pools – during flooding events.

This is all true. If the teens are found out, hopefully any punishment will not be too harsh as also the reporters posed as state media, which the teens can say they thought was sanctioned by the government. (Maybe they even believed that themselves.)
