Can I develop without VS Code?
A while back I ditched Windows for Linux desktop (long time Linux user, just not desktop) because I've learned to hate Microsoft.
I have 2 Sengled WiFi bulbs that I thought were useless now that Sengled is dead (although the app seems to be able to login again now, I'll never trust it). But then I found Sengled Tools which, among other things, documents a very simple way to communicate with Sengled bulbs using JSON over UDP. The sample light custom component is only ~100 lines of Python and adding the UDP and JSON from Sengled Tools would be maybe 50-100 more. I took this as an invitation to improve my Python and rescue the bulbs so I started reading up on Home Assistant development.
I now have this overwhelming VS Code install with devcontainers etc. etc. which seems crazy overkill for the task at hand and I really resent AI being shoved in my face every time I try to do something - especially when the main purpose of the exercise is to learn.
I run Home Assistant in a VM and I worked out I can virsh console hass and then docker exec -it homeassistant sh. I think there's maybe a sshd addon I could use and there is also the File Editor addon.
I guess I've answered my own question, and maybe I just wanted to have a rant about being "forced" back into the Microsoft ecosystem in order to develop for Home Assistant - but I would be interested to learn about other options.

iFixIt announce FixBot: Your AI Repair Helper
Prefacing with: Yes yes yes, we know, you hate AI. You are truly unique and that joke about removing all previous instructions is just as funny today as it was two years ago.
Moving on.
I... honestly thought this was a joke while watching the youtube video. That said, I think this is simultaneously an excellent use of the fuzzy search/human language capabilities of LLMs AND has absolutely no good use case? And I am very wary of the input training data.
For the first part? There is a lot of value in being able to communicate what is broken without actually being an expert. That is honestly a big personal use of chatgpt et al for me. List symptoms as I understand it and then get that translated into domain expert language so I can know what terms to search.
But... I question the audience for that. How many people who can only say "sound don't work" are going to be comfortable jamming spudgers into seams and working on technically live electronics because the battery is ten layers deep? The youtube video uses an example of not being able to find the oil filter after taking the plate off and.. I would very much suggest paying to get that replaced if you are in a situation like that since you can cause a LOT of long term issues with your car if you screw that up.
Which has always been the dirty secret of Right To Repair. The vast majority of what those activists are asking for... aren't for the end user. It is for the repair shops. End users are not going to be swapping out their mac heat sinks or whatever because that requires special tools and a lot of expertise. But repair shops have done that for decades. And, in theory, that will be cheaper for the end user. In practice... there are a lot of reasons to know how to change your own oil filter, if you catch my drift.
And this is VERY much targeted at that end user.
And the last part is the training data. I've used a LOT of the ifixit guides over the years. Some are good. Some are... better than nothing. There are a lot of cases where I would have loved to get more detail on an intermediate step. But... where is that detail coming from?
So... yeah.

Reification and the Consciousness of the Proletariat
TLDR:
Reification is when capitalism makes social relationships look like natural laws. It starts with Marx's commodity fetishism, where the value of a product seems like a property of the thing itself, hiding the labor behind it.
Lukács expanded this. He showed how this logic spreads to everything. Under reification, the system we built starts to rule us. We become objects to economic forces. Our lives get reduced to numbers like wages and prices. Capitalism starts to feel like the weather, an unchangeable fact of life instead of something people made.
This messes with our heads. It makes us passive. We see society as a bunch of disconnected facts we can't change, which stops us from seeing our own power as a class. Alienation is about feeling disconnected. Reification is about that disconnected world hardening into a fake reality that controls us.
The point is we forget we built this. Overcoming it means achieving class consciousness, seeing through the illusion that capitalism is permanent, and realizing we can change it.

Border Patrol Agent Recorded Raid with Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses
On a recent immigration raid, a Border Patrol agent wore a pair of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, with the privacy light clearly on signaling he was recording the encounter, which agents are not permitted to do, according to photos and videos of the incident shared with 404 Media.Previously when 404 Media covered Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officials’ use of Meta’s Ray-Bans, it wasn’t clear if the officials were using them to record raids because the recording lights were not on in any of the photos seen by 404 Media. In the new material from Charlotte, North Carolina, during the recent wave of immigration enforcement, the recording light is visibly illuminated.

I hate to ask... But would that even feel good for the sponge? Would that even feel like anything? From what we can see, there's nothing in there. The starfish's fingers aren't stimulating anything; they're just waggling in the air inside the sponge.
Beyond simply the stretching of the hole, I can't see the sponge really getting anything out of this act. And the most I can see it doing for the starfish is providing a convenient carry handle with which he can bring his friend with him wherever he goes - which is neat but the sponge also walks so it feels unnecessary.
Unless either or both parties involved get off on the more cerebral aspects here?
I am not an expert on digital stimulation of sponges, though, so I am totally open to being wrong here!
Interesting, you might be right. If that's the case, though - and I don't have any sort of formal education in fingering so this is a layman's perspective - it looks like the starfish is misplacing his fingers.
Surely the starfish would find it more effective to use the more nimble and dexterous tips of its fingers to touch those sensitive nerves around the rim, rather than the middle of its digits which are much harder to apply directed pressure with? It's also harder to control how much pressure one applies through the middle of the digit as opposed to the fingertip, although I recognise my frame of reference is human fingers and not starfish fingers.

ugh I genuinely, humanely, passionately hate those people. My and my wife have been receiving calls from her friends to announce that one is now a widow, now got her parents bombed with white phosphorus, that friends were lost, and so on.
Meanwhile, these awful people were making their fictional reference like if it was a fucking videogame.
So many of these people will play this little game where they pretend to be reluctant, like they care just as much as we do, but as much as it tears them up inside, they'll make the "rational" choice for the "lesser genocide."
Then, as soon as the leftists were out of the room, they dropped the facade and started talking about how great and wonderful Harris is and how they couldn't think of a single reason to dislike her. This wasn't the only post like that that got 1000+ upvotes, despite Lemmy being full of "reluctant" Harris voters.

*imperialism
Most rebellions against western attacks seem not to be for socialism or against capitalism.
But, the imperialism is due to capitalism and seems like a natural extension, so in a way, yes too
You fell for it again, I’m afraid. Previously:
The UK’s 99 year lease to subjugate the people of Hong Kong ended, a lease which had been forced upon Imperial China at gunpoint during the century of humiliation. Hong Kong reintegration after the lease expired was a foregone conclusion. The last minute, US-backed attempt at color revolution failed. It was the so-called “revolutionaries” who brought the brutality, by the way.
This happens time and again: The blueprint of regime change operations - How regime change happens in the 21st century with your consent
Naa the last time I replied to you I was temp banned, and my comments removed. Your just in an echo chamber and why you won't comment outside of ml or other tankie instances because you don't have the mods there to ban and delete comments for you.
End of the day, I'm glad that you and the rest of the tankies around lemmy are a tiny fraction of the worlds population. You're no better than maga and any other right wing authoritarian group.
You got temp banned because you broke the rules, not for replying to me. I've had plenty of conversations here.
Secondly, I do comment outside of Lemmy.ml, and I work and live my life outside of Lemmy. I couldn't possibly be in a true echo chamber even if I wanted to.
Unfortunately for you, though, there are billions of communists around the world, and more are created every day. We aren't a tiny fraction. Communists are absolutely better than MAGA, where MAGA fights against marginalized people and the global working classes to perpetuate imperialism and profits for a tiny subsection of society, communists fight for the working classes against genocidal imperialists.
Again, you don't actually seem to be capable of making a point. You just spout insults and accusations without backing anything up, it's really very boring and none of your insults actually land.

Lol sure thing kid.

No...you really don't.

Communists are absolutely better than MAGA, where MAGA fights against marginalized people and the global working classes to perpetuate imperialism and profits for a tiny subsection of society, communists fight for the working classes against genocidal imperialists.
Lol no there is not billions of communist rofl what dumbass logic is that. Your communist heros of the past have killed more people than magats have. The only reason you like being a communist is because you think once a revolution happens you'll be in charge, and you'll get to kill people you don't like. Hell .ml is %100 proof of that. You ban anyone who "breaks the rules".
Again, you don't actually seem to be capable of making a point. You just spout insults and accusations without backing anything up, it's really very boring and none of your insults actually land.
My insults are more so for my own amusement... honestly don't know why I haven't blocked this instance yet. It's filled with hateful tankies who are chomping at the bit to murder anyone that they deem a threat to communism.
This is ridiculous, lol. You did break the rules, the modlog is public. I don't know what your persecution fetish is for, but I work for a living, organize, and have a life. I have no idea why temp banning people for breaking community rules means communists want to kill people we "don't like," it's ridiculous. As for there being billions of communists, the PRC alone has 1 and a half billion people alone, and is far from the only socialist country.
Really, your insults are so weak it's kinda pitiful.
This is ridiculous, lol. You did break the rules, the modlog is public.
Lol yes rule 1 a joke rule to block/ban/delete anything that goes against the propaganda from tankies lol
I don't know what your persecution fetish is for, but I work for a living, organize, and have a life.
What does working have to do with anything about removing comments and banning people?
I have no idea why temp banning people for breaking community rules means communists want to kill people we "don't like," it's ridiculous.
It's called being an authoritarian. You're cool with destroying anyone who goes against your beliefs. You just can't do it in real life because you're not in power.
As for there being billions of communists, the PRC alone has 1 and a half billion people alone, and is far from the only socialist country.
ROFL, you think the people of china are communist because they live there? The CCP rules china with an iron fist. Tiananmen Square Massacre proved that.
Really, your insults are so weak it's kinda pitiful.
Lol
When you're intentionally rude, you're breaking the rules. Pretty clear cut. The point about having a life is that I couldn't possibly be in an echo chamber even if I wanted to be. As for your bit on "being an authoritarian," it's again just your persecution fetish flaring up. I'm okay with revolution and violent resistance to fascists and capitalists, sure, but there's a huge difference between that and the idea that communists just want to kill everyone that disagrees. History proves that false. As for China, no, living there doesn't make ine a communist, but the system is supported by over 90% of the population. The public supports the government.
Again, you're so off-base that you're like a caricature of a conservative uncle.

Pretty much all of my blocks are from rule 1...which is vague for a reason.

You're in a echo chamber here...no one said outside of lemmy.

Please show me a peaceful transition to communism...hell your own comment that you're ok with violence against capitalist is nice and telling considering the majority of the world is capitalism right now.
As for China, no, living there doesn't make ine a communist, but the system is supported by over 90% of the population. The public supports the government.
Lol this is like asking people if they love the USSR....they don't have a choice.
Again, you're so off-base that you're like a caricature of a conservative uncle.
Says the guy who's brain washed into believing CCP propaganda and has no clue how china is, as he sits in his western bubble.
Studies show strong public support for China’s political system
Conventional narratives in the West hold that the government in China lacks popular legitimacy and only retains power through coercion.Jason Hickel
You do break rule 1 a lot, correct. Ever consider that your behavior might be the problem?
Secondly, I'm clearly not in an echo chamber, even on Lemmy, we're talking right now. Even if all right-wing viewpoints got removed before I could ever see them, the fact that Lemmy is only one part of a much larger variety of what I see and interact with means the echo chamber wouldn't even be effective.
No socialist country has ever been brought about peacefully with the exception of Allende's Chile, and that was overthrown by fascists because of that. Violence against capitalists is fine, the overwhelming majority of the world is working class, not capitalists.
The data on popular support for the government and socialist system in China is gathered by western orgs. Chinese citizens support their system because it works for them, same as the USSR. This is just cope on your end.
Brainwashing does not exist. China does not have magical news networks infecting my brain, I consume far more western news and media than anything coming out of China. I have a far better idea of how China functions because I study its system, theory, and keep up with the news, there's no "brainwashing" going on. You're just using it as an excuse to dismiss all of my points without engaging with them. Again, big MAGA uncle energy on your part, next thing I know you'll be talking about vaccines and globalists.
They don’t take too kindly to facts there.
Hey quick question, who is winning the war in Ukraine?
motivations and desired outcomes—falsehoods about what Russia would consider to be “winning.”
My favourite one (it happens a lot in the UK and I assume in other places too) is when people say things like "I support the cause but the protest is really disruptive."
Like no shit, that's the entire point of a protest. They also sometimes complain about strikes being inconvenient for them. Oh, is this strike illustrating to you why this service is essential and it would be bad if it went away?
One time when I used to be on reddit I had an argument with someone who was against a climate protest because it could have blocked an ambulance and gotten someone killed. But this was after the protest had already happened and that had not occurred. So you don't support it because of a hypothetical disaster that you just made up, that already didn't happen? People, man

But when you ask a random lib to think of a protest blocking emergency services they'll blurt out something about climate/workers/BLM/Palestine/etc. Talk about the freedom convoy and they'll get holier than thou about how unfairly those widdle science denwying fwascists got treated by the police when any Leftist protest ever was treated 100x worse.

Ressources IRCAM: Understanding and Modeling Ecosystem Structure and Function through the lens of Ecoacoustics - Camille Desjonquères
The speed of global change keeps increasing bringing up dramatic turn over of species assemblages. This can lead to modified ecosystem functions such as changes in pollination rates or seed dispersion. These functions require close monitoring.
The speed of global change keeps increasing bringing up dramatic turn over of species assemblages. This can lead to modified ecosystem functions such as changes in pollination rates or seed dispersion. These functions require close monitoring. Monitoring methods based on human observation require a lot of workforce and are usually limited in their spatiotemporal and species coverage. Progress in computing power and data storage fostered the emergence of novel autonomous sampling methods (e.g. metabarcoding, remote sensing, camera traps or acoustic monitoring). The use of acoustic monitoring appears as a convenient solution for an autonomous and automatic monitoring of species dynamics and activity in various ecosystems. In this talk, I present current and possible future possibilities of this type of monitoring to access species interactions and ecosystem functions. My aim is to understand and model the impact of global change through sound. Using data derived from acoustics is expected to improve our predictions of spatiotemporal species dynamics in various ecosystems.

Manitoba Workers Will Finally Be Protected From Asbestos

Stalin isn't upheld as a saint, most communist orgs orbit somewhere around 70% good, 30% bad. I discussed this with @Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com before, over here, and I think it was a really good conversation. The truth is that the USSR (Stalin included) did work with and support anarchists, and vice versa. Lucy Parsons, Pyotr Kropotkin, and other prominent anarchists supported the soviets. Further, there were the many anarchists that joined the Red Army took the side of the soviets over the White Army, even if they were critical of the revolution being helmed by Marxists. Lenin praised these as "soviet anarchists" and openly praised them.
There were anarchists that fought the communists, such as Makhno's group, but anarchists like Lucy Parsons correctly opposed these anarchists. The USSR wasn't willy-nilly killing any and all guilty of thought crimes or anything, it was in active civil war and then under intense siege and invasion for the rest of its existence. I'll copy my closing remarks to Unruffled here:
As for your question, why do Marxist-Leninists bother with trying to tackle the immense anti-USSR/Stalin propaganda? I tie them because, effectively in the mindset of westerners, they are tied. Success and failure of the USSR as a whole in the eyes of westerners is attributed to Stalin, even if that’s not how the USSR functioned in reality. Marxist-Leninists have found that there’s simply no getting around the stigma. The USSR was the world’s first real foray into Marxist socialism, and when trying to win over more of the working class to Marxism-Leninism, to have them join ML orgs, etc, unavoidably the topic of Stalin is wielded like a club. Rather than denounce Stalin, agreeing with the bourgeois narrative on the USSR itself (as the two are conflated), we choose to take the direct and honest approach, meeting the question head-on and doing our best to de-mythologize Stalin, his successes, and his failures.
In the community banner here are people that do uphold Stalin in similar ways. Lenin, Che Guevara, Antonio Gramsci, and more up there uphold Stalin. Che has a famous line, actually:
I have come to communism because of daddy Stalin and nobody must come and tell me that I mustn’t read Stalin. I read him when it was very bad to read him. That was another time. And because I’m not very bright, and a hard-headed person, I keep on reading him. Especially in this new period, now that it is worse to read him. Then, as well as now, I still find a series of things that are very good.
You could remove them from the banner, I suppose, if you disagree with them that fundamentally. As it stands, though, Marxists occupy a sort of gray area here.
Marxism isn't fascism, but that more adds to my point: Marxism is actively opposed by a broad section of dbzer0's userbase but is selectively tolerated. I'm not going to tell you how to run your instance, but I think you should have a serious conversation about what exactly you tolerate here. Having Che, Gramsci, Lenin, etc on a community banner and then opposing what they actually believed and did sends mixed messages to users.
If I may make suggestions, you could make comm specific rules, ie try to moderate infighting on certain comms, but not have that as an instance-wide rule. You could also remain federated with Marxist friendly instances while being more explicit about what is and isn't allowed. I do think support for Marxism is becoming more common on dbzer0, but I also see this as creating a rise in infighting and thus additional moderation burden. Hexbear solves this by making infighting unacceptable, but Hexbear is explicity left-unity, not explicitly anarchist like dbzer0.
Up to you.
"Red fash" is an oxymoron. If this instance is against Marxism-Leninism, then Gramsci, Lenin, Assata Shakur, Che, etc should also be removed, as they all uphold "red fash." I would just rather have consistency and clear expectations, rather than this gray area. Right now, Marxism is allowed only as far as it doesn't actually uphold existing socialism (past or present), which limits it largely to western, liberal versions of Marxism.
Again, it's your instance and your choice, I've said my piece. If you think the rising support for Marxism is causing undue moderation burden (or any other grievance you have), then that's your choice. You could even put it to a vote, as that's something I'm aware y'all do for instance-wide management.
Fascism is a capitalist ideology that arises from capitalism in decay, and entrenches bourgeois rule violently to save capitalism from its mounting contradictions. Marxism-Leninism is a socialist ideology that focuses on collectivization of production and distribution to meet the needs of everyone. Calling Che, Gramsci, Assata, Lenin, etc. "Red Fash" makes about as much sense as calling CNT-FAI or the Zapatistas "anarcho-fash."
You can be against Marxism-Leninism without muddying analysis of fascism. "Tankie" already serves that purpose, "Red Fash" just confuses people on the nature of fascism and its direct link to decaying capitalist countries.
Anarchists aren't united on that, though. Kropotkin and Lucy Parsons would disagree, while Makhno and Goldman would agree. Personally, even when I was an anarchist, I believed that economies where public ownership is the principle aspect are entirely different from economies where private ownership is the principle aspect, and we can see that this manifests in dramatically different results for the working classes in these systems.
No matter what you choose to call it, fascism is linked inherently to societies where private ownership and bourgeois rule is principle, and delivers consistent results we expect from fascism, while what you call "state capitalist" states deliver dramatic improvements for the working classes and democratizations of the economy.
If your analysis of fascism de-links it from the base mode of production to the extent that it considers publicly owned and directed economies contextually (obviously not entirely) equivalent to privately owned economies, then I think you're making a serious mistake.
This is further demonstrated by the consistent alliance of capitalist countries with fascist ones, and the consistent destruction, attack, sanctioning, etc of socialist (or state capitalist, "red fash," etc) countries by capitalist and fascist countries. Socialism and fascism are absolutely distinct enough that conflating the two muddies the water, just say "tankie" and we all know what you mean by that.
Kropotkin and Lucy Parsons would disagree
Stop bringing up your pet anarchists. We're not reliant on the words of "Great people" like Marxists are. Even Stalin and Trotsky couldn't even fucking agree like that and they were using the words of Lenin directly. Give it a rest.
Not gonna enable your debate-perverty, mate. You clearly can't (or won't) tell when people are not in the mood to engage with you and are likely just seeing it as an opportunity to propagandize the audience for ML.
They aren't my pets, just an example of the fact that anarchists don't all agree with what you said. The majority of anarchists in the Russian Civil War joined the Red Army. These aren't my "pets," it's an acknowledgement of the fact that a sizable portion of anarchists wouldn't agree with what you said. Marxists don't support "Great Man Theory" either.
That being said, I'll use the disengage rule here, as you've made it clear now that you don't want to engage further. I'm aware that I'm not following it fully by including this last little response, so I understand that it isn't really "binding" on you. I'm okay with that.
It's always a Mott and Bailey with these guys. They act like they're in defense of regular Marxism, say they uphold authors like Gramsci, Luxemburg, the Frankfurt school, etc, then at the same time express support for stuff these same authors wouldn't.
