How Israel Organizes and Arms Settler Militias to Terrorize Palestinians in the West Bank

As the men approached, I asked one of them who he was. They looked like soldiers, but the vehicles in which they arrived had yellow civilian license plates. These masked assailants were members of the hagmar— settler reservist militias formally attached to the Israeli army and tasked with “security” in West Bank settlements. The men dragged me behind a fence where four of them beat me until I required hospitalization. They stole the phone of an International Solidarity Mission activist who tried to record the attack.
My host, Abu Safi, who was 84, had little choice but to leave his home after that raid by the hagmar. The family packed up their belongings accumulated over decades in the house and moved to a nearby location in Area B. Abu Safi died of a heart attack soon afterwards.

Former Chinese senior banker executed for taking US$155 million in bribes
China has executed a former senior banker who was found guilty of taking more than 1.1 billion yuan (US$155 million) in bribes.
Bai Tianhui, the former general manager of the asset management firm China Huarong International Holdings, was executed on Tuesday after the Supreme People’s Court approved the sentence, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
The state-owned offshore unit Bai ran was taken over by Citic Group and renamed China Citic Financial Asset Management in January last year.

Paramilitary “Fitness Clubs.” Anti-Trans Crusades. Far-Right Extremism Is Here | The Walrus
Canadians tend to think of far-right extremism and white nationalism as a strictly American problem, adopting an “it couldn’t happen here” mindset, or seeing it as a lunatic fringe that should just be ignored. But these movements are gaining a foothold in mainstream culture, and the structure for that to happen has been in this country since its inception.
White supremacy arrived in Canada in the fifteenth century, with the first Europeans. Since then, Canada has waged a cultural and literal genocide against Indigenous peoples, including the horrors perpetrated as early as 1831 at Christian church- and government-sponsored residential schools, which were designed to strip children from their families and their culture, with the last federally run residential school closing in 1996. In 1911, the government passed an order-in-council to ban Black immigrants from entering Canada (it was never invoked). In 1921, the Ku Klux Klan formed its first Canadian chapter. In 1946, Viola Desmond was arrested for refusing to leave the whites-only section of a movie theatre. The last segregated school in Canada didn’t close until 1983.
The late 2010s brought with them the “alt-right” era, a term coined by white nationalist Richard Spencer to differentiate his views from traditional American conservatism. Originally characterized by online trolling, the “alt-right” was a random and reactionary series of chats, pages, memes, and shitposting accounts—mainly from the US—as well as a loose collection of more serious actors like the Proud Boys and Atomwaffen. Over the years, its membership has become increasingly public, participating in rallies and engaging in acts of violence in the real world. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, a new iteration has emerged in Canada: Diagolon.

In a Rare Move, Two Manitoba Hospitals Declared Unsafe for Nurses | The Walrus
IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUT when the attacks occurred. In just forty-five minutes, a slim, dark-haired man wearing a Jets jersey sexually assaulted three nurses and a teenager in and around Winnipeg’s largest hospital, the Health Sciences Centre (HSC), on July 2, according to police.
While officers searched for the suspect, hospital workers finished their shifts and walked back to their vehicles, unaware a predator was at large. Later, police would report that a third woman was assaulted that night in the area, by the same man. Staff didn’t learn what happened until the following day.
For HSC employees, these assaults weren’t an aberration. They were a tipping point after years of increasing violence against hospital staff. In a 2024 survey, one-third of physicians at HSC reported experiencing an average of eleven safety episodes in the previous year, almost double the provincial rate. A safety episode can include threats, violence, sexual assault, and harassment. HSC alone accounted for nearly half of all reported assaults on Manitoba doctors. Physicians described being punched, kicked, spat on, and bombarded with verbal abuse. The danger follows them outside the hospital into walkways and parking lots, where some have been chased and attacked coming to and from the job.

This summer, members of the Manitoba Nurses Union took the rare step of voting to “grey-list” HSC, a powerful public warning issued only five times over the past forty-five years. Grey listing alerts nurses that HSC is deemed unsafe, signalling they should reconsider or use caution when applying to or accepting work there. It doesn’t force current employees to quit, but it sends a clear message to the public and government about the facility’s working conditions. In November, the union grey-listed a second Manitoba facility, Thompson General Hospital, due to unsafe working conditions. The vote to grey-list HSC this August came hours after staff learned of a sixth sexual assault on campus in just a couple of weeks, according to the Winnipeg Free Press. Security found the woman and took her inside for treatment. Police arrested a thirty-nine-year-old man soon after. On the same day, a patient being transferred from HSC’s Crisis Response Centre to the ER claimed to be carrying a bomb, sparking a police response. Both incidents underscored the union’s warning that the hospital had become dangerous. Shared Health convened a meeting with union leaders and government officials. In a statement, the organization pointed to steps already implemented over the years, such as hiring more safety officers, adding AI weapon scanners, and installing 100 new cameras. The Manitoba Nurses Union also demanded new measures: swipe-card access for tunnels, secure entrances always staffed, and a notice as soon as it’s known a dangerous offender is active in or near the facility.
What possessed the cops to not issue a warning is beyond me.
As always, ACAB.

Of course. Everyone is susceptible to propaganda. Only westerners think they’re above it, a testament to how brainwashed they truly are.
Edit: the fact this comment is even remotely controversial literally proves my point lmao
Lol that's pretty cringe
There's a general current on hexbear of desperately wanting socialism to be closer than it is and it leads to weird shit like this or takes on the government and economy of China that are weirdly optimistic.
I still find them on average more informed and less annoying than most people on lemmy but the comment sections of propaganda photo ops are cringe as fuck.
One of the funniest things is when someone shows their strong opinions are well informed by recognising what they're looking at.

Pretty insane that you can’t see the direct parallel between this and a literal fucking monarchy. They’ve made songs for them, built palaces, the entire country stopped and wept when the queen died… If a bunch of asians did that you’d be going on about their “glorious dear leader” without a hint of irony.

'Scept the monarchy thing is purely cringe nationalism; the british royalty have no power to actually govern - influence perhaps, but a shockingly small amount, and no authority to back it up. The other image is of the same kind of monarchy-esque celebration but for the leader of the government. That's why it's bad, it's a monarchy-esque display but for someone who actually has a huge amount of power.
Nobody talks about the monarchy being a celebration of "dear leader" because it fundementally isn't, the royal family aren't leaders.

Yeah, I know you don't. I'll freely admit it was kinda self-indulgent to try and explain such a basic aspect of debate, and I was just happily dunking on you under the assumption it'd go over your head and you'd play off the superiority complex to try to save some face.
I notice you haven't replied to the other commenter which laid out in much clearer terms what I'm saying here, and goes into more details about why you're full o' crap - if you're so interested in an "adult conversation" why haven't you just gone to engage with them instead?
The monachy in the UK has the decorum but basically none of the power.
It's fair and even fun to mock the UK monarchy decorum, but there's no comparison between UK and DPRK in term of power held by the leader, and the level of totalitarism. The comparison in the post's image is so ludicrous, I seriously wonder if that's trolling, it's hard to imagine someone really believing that while being outside of North Korea and having free access to information.
There are opposition groups and even an anti-monarchy group in the UK and their members don't end up in prison camp for not being loyal to the royal family.

Surely it's not controversial to say North Korea is a totalitarian state ruled by an absolute leader that outlawed and violently represses any and all forms of political opposition, including those to his left, right?
I'm the first to shit on peoples' inability to see past cold war propaganda, as evidenced by a lot of my post history in this subreddit or one of my related comics or another one, there's plenty. Speaking as a non-reactionary, the DPRK is one of the worst examples to use in your comparison. It is not a country you should be stanning for, or using as a tool in a stupid game of "source for human rights abuse???". It does get a very unfair treatment and representation in western media and diplomacy, sure, but it doesn't make it a good comparison when the other one is a country where you can publicly denounce the propaganda without making yourself a target.
Where are all the DPRK Lemmy users? Oh yes, right, probably too busy smoking the "works cited" bong to participate.
Human Rights in North Korea

Did you seriously just link HRW as evidence? Not gonna take the word from a western organization that is nothing more than an extension of imperialism. What a joke lol.
Feel free to show me a single documented instance of what you’re claiming.
Right, only juche sources will be tolerated when discussing the juche. Glory to our dear leader and his socialist utopia.
Have fun with your public self-humiliation ritual, I'm not into it.
One is a democracy with a figurehead monarch that the populace could get rid of if there was popular demand for it.
The other is an absolute monarchy that will kill you for criticising the monarch.
Any source for someone being murdered for that?
Edit: they were never heard from again 🤣
Are you serious? North Korea kills people for all kinds of things. E.g. Watching foreign media
Edit: they were never heard from again 🤣
Sorry I'm not terminally online like you. I actually have a life outside of simping for North Korea online.

You just sent me a link of people getting executed for distributing illegal materials. The topic was about criticizing the monarchy 🤣
I’ll give you another opportunity to prove this claim you made. I will gladly wait.
My point - as you very well know - was that NK kills its citizens for practically anything. That includes criticism of the monarch, which is classified as treason there.
As you are also very well aware, nothing like that happens in the UK. People freely criticise/mock the figurehead monarch all the time.
Being a tanky is very cringey. Your post history is hilarious.
You'd be among the first to be put into a camp or killed in any of the countries you so regularly simp for. You're very lucky to be crying about how bad your society is from a western country.
Western governments kill foreigners for criticising their heads of state?
I am brown, fuckwit.
Lmao
You're a crazy conspiracy theorist.
Move to North Korea if it's the paradise you think it is.
they were never heard from again
Unlike you feds, real people have shit to do outside online trolling and tankiebaiting
Please could you provide a source that you don't stick your thumb in your butt then lick it.

Bolivia and Israel restore ties severed over the war in Gaza
LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Bolivia’s new right-wing government said Tuesday that it restored diplomatic relations with Israel, the latest sign of the dramatic geopolitical realignment underway in the South American country that was once among the most vocal critics of Israeli policies toward Palestinians.
Bolivian Foreign Minister Fernando Aramayo met his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar in Washington and signed a declaration agreeing to revive bilateral ties, which Bolivia’s previous left-wing government severed two years ago over Israel’s devastating campaign against Hamas in Gaza.
Aramayo, as well as Bolivian Economy Minister José Gabriel Espinoza, launched this week into a whirlwind of meetings with American officials as their government works to warm long-chilly relations with the United States and unravel nearly two decades of hard-line, anti-Western policies under the Movement Toward Socialism, or MAS
When protests over Morales’ disputed 2019 reelection prompted him to resign under pressure from the military, a right-wing interim government took over and restored full diplomatic relations with the U.S. and Israel as it sought to undo many of Morales’ popular policies.
But 2020 elections brought the MAS party back to power with the presidency of Luis Arce, who in 2023 once again cut ties with Israel in protest over its military actions in Gaza.
it's more than tragic, it goes to prove that it only takes a momentary lapse of collectivist vigilance or a single mistake to reverse all momentum that these movements have earned; it has to be absolutely perfect, meanwhile the opposing side has well placed zealots who will never stop trying and a never ending supply of paid actors.
this is also why i believe that the us empire will endure considerably longer than most m/l people think it will last despite its undeniable signs of collapse.

Jordan Peterson’s School Isn’t Accredited. Smith Offered Alberta’s Help | The Tyee
Jordan Peterson, the popular and polarizing psychologist, is held in high esteem by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who has twice appeared on Peterson’s podcast, which draws millions of listeners worldwide.
A Tyee investigation has found that Smith’s admiration for Peterson went well beyond her affinity for him as a fellow conservative culture warrior.
Documents obtained through freedom of information request show that Smith, and her chief of staff, Rob Anderson, directly intervened with Alberta’s Advanced Education Ministry in an attempt to help Peterson’s higher-education business venture.
On Aug. 1, 2024, Smith met with Peterson “to discuss how his organization can work with the province to have their online training platform accredited.”

Peterson is different. JP has genuine psychological issues stemming from god knows what…but part of his mental illness is continuously trying to get revenge because he was rejected by who he thinks are his peers in the academic community.
Like…he always seems like he’s on the verge of tears or even a nervous breakdown. As a knee jerk I always feel sorry for him when I hear him speak…until I snap out of it and remember how destructive he is.
To the best of my knowledge it is 100% factual and accurate. We haven’t gotten an update from the family in a couple months. He’s still in the hospital but we don’t know how it’s going, other than he is “facing a long road to recovery”
As a matter of pure speculation: I assume he will never recover, because he probably only accepts treatments from quacks who support his extreme elimination diet
Mikhaila Peterson said in a YouTube video: “We don’t have a better explanation for his neurological symptoms at the moment other than spiritual attacks.”

The now 13-year-old Japanese macaque has seen enough of the spotlight to last a lifetime.
Darwin was just a baby when he was found in a North York Ikea parking lot in 2012, wearing a diaper and shearling coat, and seized by animal services. He’s been living at Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, Ont., ever since.

DND scrambles to figure out how to mobilize and equip a citizens' army: documents
The Department of National Defence is scrambling to figure out how it will clothe, equip and train hundreds of thousands of new reservists envisioned under an ambitious mobilization proposal that Canada’s top military commander describes as a work in progress.
Similarly, in what may be an ominous sign of the times, the department has established a key position dedicated solely to growing the military in the event of a major crisis.
Internal documents obtained by CBC News show the military buildup will, at the moment, proceed slowly because the defence industry is either overwhelmed — or not equipped for the ramp-up.

Senators call on prime minister to ban advertising for sports betting
Two senators are calling on the federal government to ban advertising for sports betting in Canada.
A letter to the prime minister from Charlottetown Sen. Percy Downe and Waterloo Sen. Marty Deacon asks the government to have the CRTC ban all advertising for sports gambling apps and websites. It is supported by 40 other senators.
The letter says people of all ages who are exposed to the stream of ads are being influenced to turn their phone into "a pocket-sized casino."
It also references a CBC Marketplace report that found gambling messages fill up, on average, 21 per cent of a sporting event’s broadcast runtime.
