Cheaper 8Gbps internet plans could soon head your way

After the Montreal-based national telecom launched its 8Gbps fibre internet plans earlier this year, it filed an application with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to offer an 8Gbps speed tier for wholesale services, and the Commission has now approved the application on an interim basis.
in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

I get 3 Gbps now but I cannot get much more than 1 Gbps in practice due to the wrong in my home. Even if I had 8 Gbps, my network is not getting any faster.
in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

I get gigabit, and that tests out to 700MBPS... and i can never saturate it. Not sure why i would need a bigger pipe for a long time.

Age Verification Is Coming For the Internet. We Built You a Resource Hub to Fight Back.

One of the issues with "age verification" is that an effect of the suggested technologies is that they ultimatively take control of your computer. In the suggested form, they require elements that are not controlled by you, the user. It is like replacing the lock to your home's main door, for which YOU (and only you) have the keys, with an electronic, remotely controlled lock, controlled by goverments, which can lock out at any time.

This was always to the goal of "age verification". The government wants a way to know who is behind every "subversive" comment so that they can chill speech. "For the children" is just the most convenient excuse.

If that doesn't work, it will be "to fight terrorism".

in reply to CosmicTurtle0 [he/him]

I’m so vehemently opposed to using their euphemism for it. “Age verification” is just the marketing name for it, it’s identity verification.
in reply to HaraldvonBlauzahn

Lets hope this forces tor and I2P to become the "normal" internet.

'Depraved Response to a Depraved Act': Netanyahu Blames Attack on Australia Recognizing Palestine | Common Dreams

in reply to Peter Link

I wish he and others knew that the actions of the Israeli government endanger us Jews across the world. We used to think Israel would be a safe haven for us if shit hit the fan; now it puts our lives in jeopardy.
in reply to GFGJewbacca

Oh, he knows. To some extent.

I don’t think Netanyahu is a “true fundamentalist” like the far right part of the government. He’s Machiavellian, a suvivalist. Perhaps it’s all some means to an end, but I think Israel’s international toxicity is very much factored into his political calculus.

I don’t mean to question his faith, and I hate to sound cynical, but he’s got a looong trail of political decisions that sure speak to that.

Kind of a weird perspective imo. You’re against Israel, not because they are murdering countless people, but because they make you look bad? Your priorities are confusing.

in reply to dogbert

No, I'm against what the government is doing because the IDF is committing a genocide and already murdered over 18,000 women and children. I'm more wondering why the folks in government don't understand how their actions endanger Jews everywhere, not just in Israel.
in reply to dogbert

It’s a legitimate reason to speak out against Israel. They are committing genocide while claiming self defense for all Jewish people.

Israel does not represent all Jewish people any more than The Pope represents all Christian’s.

The Israeli government is a terrorist organization, not a religion. They endanger Jewish folks all over the world through their violent, racist, terrorist, genocidal actions and speech and propaganda.

in reply to GFGJewbacca

He does know that: they want Jews outside of Israel to be unsafe in order to justify their Zionist project and to drive more settlers to it.
in reply to Peter Link

I submit that this happened not because Australia recognizes Palestine, but that it doesn't recognize Palestine in all but pointless words. If Palestine was actually recognized as an independent country on the world stage this wouldn't have happened.

Though whoever feels the need to shoot random people partying on a beach is obviously not right in the head so there's also a chance they would have just picked something else as their reason.

'Depraved Response to a Depraved Act': Netanyahu Blames Attack on Australia Recognizing Palestine | Common Dreams

Jessica Corbett
Dec 14, 2025

“Obviously massacring unarmed men, women, and children at a Hanukkah celebration is antisemitic terror,” Nathaniel added in a separate thread. “Just like massacring unarmed men, women, and children in Gaza and the West Bank is anti-Palestinian terror. There are no moral exceptions regarding the slaughter of civilians.”

Electronic Intifada director Ali Abunimah said, “Basically Netanyahu is saying that Australia got what it had coming for not supporting his genocide in Gaza even more than it already does.”

in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

What am I going to do with all those extra "U"s I have lying around? Give them to the neighbours? Paint them different colours and nail them to the walls?
in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

For duck sake, just spell shit in a way it can be understood. Nationalization of language is so dumb.

16 Dead After Shooters Target Hanukkah Celebration at Australia's Bondi Beach | Common Dreams

Jessica Corbett
Dec 14, 2025

“The images out of Bondi Beach in Australia this morning of a vile, antisemitic massacre at a Hanukkah celebration are shocking, disgusting, and heartbreaking,” said Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a US Senate candidate.

Would be funny if NORAD's Santa tracker says Santa was denied entry into the Untied States. Except I wouldn't want to upset the children.
in reply to FreshParsnip

Tbh I kinda do want to upset the children. Piss them off and make them ask questions to their shitty-ass parents. Make the families uncomfortable. Maybe we'll teach some kids that their parents are to blame for the state of the world.
in reply to Zahille7

Would be interesting to see the Trump administration's reaction if a teacher got in trouble for telling kids that Santa's not allowed to enter the country this year
in reply to Zahille7

Yeah we need a generation after us to question and research and get politically involved
in reply to FreshParsnip

Wasn't trump just saying xmas gifts for young children might be something people need sacrifice for the economy? They should totally blame ice for stopping santa

Expert warns of ‘unintended consequences’ if Canada implements youth social media ban

in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

Unintended consequences? Of what? Living like it's 2010, before the slow build up of mass enshittification of everything that's on the internet since then? Sure. I'd rather have kids playing some video games - ones that likely will teach them some skills rather than doom scrolling and being fed algorithmic AI slop.
