Signal installation in a Distrobox

Signal only provides a script for .deb based distros on their official website. The flatpak is currently not ideal because it stores encryption keys in plaintext.

The provided link suggests an automated installation in a Ubuntu Distrobox including automated updates. Useful for every distro that does not natively support .deb packages.

i mean its great if it works well, but kinda funny we need to run a full distro in a container to run a browser to run an IM program

FYI, OpenSuse maintains .rpm builds of the signal app in their repos, specifically targeted at OpenSuse Leap and Fedora. They work great for me.

Edmonton sees record increase in frostbite amputations, despite innovative treatment

Like many Albertans at this time of year, Louis Francescutti is thinking about the weather.

“The snow fell last night, so temperatures are well below zero,” said the Edmonton emergency physician.

“As we speak, there are probably men and women out there developing frostbite right now. And so my colleagues probably later today or tomorrow will start treating this year’s round of frostbites.”

“About two to three weeks ago, I saw two patients that had infected amputation sites from last year’s frostbite,” said Francescutti.

“In other words, we are still dealing with frostbite from a year ago. And now these men and women are still homeless and chances are they’re going to reinjure themselves again.”

Claude CLI deleted someone home directory and wiped his Mac

Source: Reddit Post.

Claude CLI deleted my entire home directory! Wiped my whole mac.

I was having the Claude CLI clean up my packages in an old repo, and it nuked my whole Mac! What the hell? Has anyone ever had this happen? I’m trying to figure out if this is even reversible. So much work lost..

CLAUDE response - I found the problem and it's really bad. Looking at your log, here's the catastrophic command that was run:

bash

rm -rf tests/ patches/ plan/ ~/

See that \~/ at the end? That's your entire home directory. The Claude Code instance accidentally included \~/ in the deletion command, which would wipe out:
  • Your entire Desktop (\~/Desktop)
  • Documents, Downloads, everything
  • Your Keychain (\~/Library/Keychains)
  • Claude credentials (\~/.claude)
  • Application support data
  • Basically everything in /Users/...

This explains why:

  1. Your desktop is gone
  2. Your keychain was deleted
  3. Your Claude credentials disappeared
  4. The error at the end says "current working directory was deleted"

Cheaper 8Gbps internet plans could soon head your way

After the Montreal-based national telecom launched its 8Gbps fibre internet plans earlier this year, it filed an application with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to offer an 8Gbps speed tier for wholesale services, and the Commission has now approved the application on an interim basis.
in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

I get 3 Gbps now but I cannot get much more than 1 Gbps in practice due to the wrong in my home. Even if I had 8 Gbps, my network is not getting any faster.
in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

I get gigabit, and that tests out to 700MBPS... and i can never saturate it. Not sure why i would need a bigger pipe for a long time.

Age Verification Is Coming For the Internet. We Built You a Resource Hub to Fight Back.

One of the issues with "age verification" is that an effect of the suggested technologies is that they ultimatively take control of your computer. In the suggested form, they require elements that are not controlled by you, the user. It is like replacing the lock to your home's main door, for which YOU (and only you) have the keys, with an electronic, remotely controlled lock, controlled by goverments, which can lock out at any time.

This was always to the goal of "age verification". The government wants a way to know who is behind every "subversive" comment so that they can chill speech. "For the children" is just the most convenient excuse.

If that doesn't work, it will be "to fight terrorism".

in reply to CosmicTurtle0 [he/him]

I’m so vehemently opposed to using their euphemism for it. “Age verification” is just the marketing name for it, it’s identity verification.

Lets hope this forces tor and I2P to become the "normal" internet.
