What will a post US empire world look like?
The US must have been thinking about China at least since 1990. Now they fumble the hardest when they need to be the wittiest?
I don't buy it. The US are preparing to contain China. At best they have AI and robotics first and retake global productions. But I expect a war. Edit: And unless the USA lose, the empire will remain for a long time.
It's difficult to say what the winner will do with a most likely radioactive world. I would expect that there is no need for disinformation, especially if robots do the policing. So those people who survive will have a physical constrained, but intellectually rich life.
However, without AI and destroyed knowledge from bombing the civilization centers, technology could also fall back to the 1960s or even 1860s, but with internet.
They are fumbling now because of their hubris, overextension, and the contradictions of the system.
In the '90s, they believed that exposing China to capitalism would naturally and inevitably cause the fall of the Communist system, so they threw the doors wide open.
2001 is when China joined to the WTO and also when...9/11 happened, crippling and distracting the Western empire for over two decades.
When Hillary Neocon Clinton became Secretary of State in 2016, she unveiled with much fanfare the "pivot to Asia". The Obama administration spent the next 8 years trying to replicate the EU and NATO in Southeast Asia. (TPP and the Quad).
Trump-1 came into office and immediately withdrew the US from the TPP. He did some blustering and flailing around with tariffs, which people seemed to think constituted containment of China at the time.
Biden came into office and he and the other Western leaders sabotaged and escalated their way into the Ukraine war. (Read up on the Istanbul process before you get annoying in the replies, Libs). You can read The New Atlas for excellent analysis about how this is a substrategy for Chinese containment, which is an argument that I agree with. However, it had the effect of once again paralyzing, weakening, and distracting the Western imperial alliance.
Now we are in Trump-2. He committed perhaps the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of the US empire when he went on the attack against India with tariffs to try and separate them from Russia. This blew black in the most spectacular fashion by driving them closer to Russia and kicking off a rapprochement with China that is still bearing diplomatic fruit to this day. Therefore, we can say that Trump severely weakened the overall strategic plan for the Asia Pacific region by single-handedly preventing TPP and the Quad from coming into force as tools of the US empire (for the forseable future), unlike NATO and the EU.
At the present day, the empire is struggling to extricate itself from Ukraine without having a Kabul / Saigon moment. The Western armories are bare, having sent everything they can spare and very much they could not spare in a desperate attempt to turn the tide of the proxy conflict. The F-35 fighter jet is STILL NOT OPERATIONAL ACCORDING TO THE PROGRAM'S OWN DEFINITION. By contrast, at the 80-year commemoration parade, the Chinese unveiled no fewer than a dozen new weapon systems, many a generation or more ahead of their US counterparts.
They are failing everywhere and cannot admit it. A humiliating defeat in Ukraine is inevitable, now the only question is whether the Russians will end up with Odessa. American warships are powerless against Chinese hypersonic cruise missiles. Japan tried to ramp up the rhetoric on Taiwan only to get slapped down by the US. We are witnessing the death throes of a wounded animal with suicidally inflated ego. Unfortunately, this wounded animal also has nuclear weapons, so it's a very dangerous time for all of us.

Naturally occurring sorbitol in prunes is what makes them a good laxative. And honestly, the extreme diarrhea from sorbitol isn’t related to what this article is saying is a potential health problem.
But the amount of sorbitol needed to cause liver strain as described in the article is going to be more than the amount needed to cause diarrhea, so it seems like a moot point.
This is the correct comment. People are very quick to demonize food and food manufacturers, and I'm not saying they aren't making money on stuff that could be bad for us, but my understanding is that a lot of food additives that people worry about have been proven safe at reasonable consumption levels.

A Frustrated Congress Pushes the Pentagon to Produce Its Boat Strike Orders [NYT Gift Article]
The annual defense policy bill [...] would withhold 25 percent of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s travel budget if he failed to give the congressional national security committees a copy of the execute orders behind the strikes, or to outline how he planned to facilitate future briefings about the operation with lawmakers in accordance with federal law.
[...]
Federal law requires the Defense Department to send execute orders to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees within 15 days of the defense secretary issuing the orders, but officials have failed to do so in the case of the boat strikes. The law also mandates that if the top Republicans or Democrats on the committees were to specifically request such an order, the department would have 30 days to comply, another timeline that the Trump administration has ignored.

Kushner role in bid for Warner Bros raises ethical questions, experts say
ared Kushner's financing role in Paramount's $108 billion bid for Warner Bros Discovery injects Trump-family interests into one of the biggest media battles in years, raising concerns over whether the president's influence could tip the scales.
Paramount Skydance (PSKY.O), opens new tab on Monday launched a hostile bid for Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O), opens new tab in a last-ditch effort to outbid Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab and create a media powerhouse.
Paramount said its offer includes financing from Kushner's investment firm Affinity Partners, along with financing from the Saudi and Qatari sovereign wealth funds and L'imad Holding Co., owned by Abu Dhabi.
Trump told reporters on Monday that he has not spoken with Kushner about Warner Bros Discovery, adding that neither Netflix or Paramount "are friends of mine." A day earlier, Trump said he would be involved in a decision on Netflix's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros studios and streaming assets.

These contribute for sure. But I honestly think that narcissistic people that are wealthy enough just don't have the level of stress throughout life that a normal person does.
Dude acts like a child looking for gratification from mommy and gets it from the "media" that asks him questions.
Less stress throughout an entire lifetime. It makes up for being an overweight old man that would have died decades ago if he ever had to worry about paying rent or had back pain from manual labor.

So he'll be good for 10-18 days and then start sundowning till they hit him with the next bump.
But then again who knows it's the internet after all.
There was a thread I saw not too long ago where someone brought up a little conspiracy theory I think I may subscribe to
There's a new Alzheimer's treatment, Lecanemab/Leqembi, that was given accelerated approval in the US by the FDA this year in January, so just as trump took office.
It's given by IV every 4 weeks. Trump has been seen with what looks like makeup thats covering up bruising from an IV
It also seems like he has highs and lows where he declines for a couple weeks then perks back up a bit before declining again, and you can maybe kind of match those up to a similar 4-ish week cycle.
And it also calls for regular cognitive tests and MRIs to monitor if it's effective, and, well, trump has been doing that.
I hope he dies on camera in one of these meetings. Imagine the chaos.
He will obviously outlive most of us...

Honestly I don't think it would have made a difference. The Harris campaign made it clear she doesn't care for her voter base - it's more important not to step on the Biden administrations' toes than to properly represent the people and win. What's the best that could have happened? Harris would have gone on stage with even more Republicans?
They would have found a way to tank it either way.
The "Harris" campaign was a continuation of Biden's ongoing campaign under a new candidate. They never had a chance to set their own messaging nor policy priorities. And although I too doubt it would have ultimately stopped Trump, it certainly would have allowed them to try to target younger demographics with their policy.
I also fear that the Democratic party's takeaway from the whole ordeal may be that America is not yet ready for a woman president. But any candidate would have lost under Harris's circumstances. And Hillary was just a terrible candidate. Yet because those are the only two woman candidates we've had for President and both lost horribly, it's easy to draw the wrong conclusion here that those are related.
The "Harris" campaign was a continuation of Biden's ongoing campaign under a new candidate. They never had a chance to set their own messaging nor policy priorities.
I don't see why the campaign being a continuation meant they couldn't set their own messaging or policy priorities. As far as I know, donations etc. can't be taken back if a campaign changes policies. Could you explain what you mean here?
Sorry, but that's not an acceptable answer. If you can't pivot your campaign even though your polling research shows you that individual, divisive topics are causing you to lose, something is broken enough that you definitely shouldn't have ever been a valid candidate. How can you expect to win against a populist if it takes years to listen to your voters?!
I knew that Harris will lose the second she stepped on stage, was asked how things will change with her, and she answered that nothing will fundamentally change if she's elected. All while the other candidate keeps telling people that he understands they are hurting, and that he'll improve everything. I don't care who was responsible for that strategy - everyone involved should be banned from having influence on another campaign.
Oh, God... I don't know if laughing or crying 😅

I spent more than two years volunteering in the National Park system. Swore in thousands of Junior Rangers. Stood in gypsum dunes, Civil War battlefields, and a lot of places where kids looked at the world with the kind of hope adults forget they once had.
So hearing that MLK Day and Juneteenth were dropped from the fee-free calendar and replaced with Trump’s birthday just knocked the wind out of me.
MLK Day is a day of service.
Juneteenth marks freedom.
These days mean something.
Trump’s birthday does not.
I cannot imagine looking a kid in the eye after that oath and explaining why the end of slavery no longer counts but a politician’s birthday does. I will not volunteer under that. Not for one more hour.
The land will outlast whoever did this. The dunes will still glow white. The mountains will still hold their shape. But the values behind the Park Service only survive if we protect them.
If you want the longer version of why this hit me so hard, I wrote about it here:

Recently it was in the news that Israel considers Gaza still strongly under the control of Hamas.
Which parts exactly?
Every inch that isn't occupied by Israel.
Israel has made it abbundantly clear that they will not stop until Palestine ceases to exist.
I wonder what Israel's long-term plan is. Because if they achieve their objective and wipe out Gaza then they're going to be international pariahs for pretty much the rest of history.
Regardless of what governments made decide there is going to be extreme social pressure for businesses to not work with them, and the thing is they represent such a small market it isn't worth the inevitable boycott doing business with them would result in. The Israeli government have to know this, civilians living in Israel must know this, yet here we are.
then they’re going to be international pariahs for pretty much the rest of history.
Not really. They have a pretty good stranglehold on dictating what others get to think.

Justices Seem Ready to Give Trump More Power to Fire Independent Government Officials

Congress can remove a justice with a majority vote in the house and a 2/3 supermajority in the Senate. This means you can't actually remove a judge unless they lose support from within their own party, and the Republicans have shown that they wont go along with removal no matter what.
This means that in practice, the path forward is to add additional judges, so that the Republicans are a minority, and unable to do any damage.
What if they want to remove one as an “official act”?
I think this is all horrible, but I really want them to eat their own dog food.
I dunno who wrote this but most of the conservative justices seemed against it. Implying that if it is overturned a president could use it to make every commission independent jam in appointees with lifetime positions and no one could do anything about it.
They seem to understand they don't have actual party support anymore.
