Just 0.001% hold three times the wealth of poorest half of humanity, report finds
Fewer than 60,000 people – 0.001% of the world’s population – control three times as much wealth as the entire bottom half of humanity, according to a report that argues global inequality has reached such extremes that urgent action has become essential.
The authoritative World Inequality Report 2026, based on data compiled by 200 researchers, also found that the top 10% of income-earners earn more than the other 90% combined, while the poorest half captures less than 10% of total global earnings.
Wealth – the value of people’s assets – was even more concentrated than income, or earnings from work and investments, the report found, with the richest 10% of the world’s population owning 75% of wealth and the bottom half just 2%.
In almost every region, the top 1% was wealthier than the bottom 90% combined, the report found, with wealth inequality increasing rapidly around the world.
“The result is a world in which a tiny minority commands unprecedented financial power, while billions remain excluded from even basic economic stability,” the authors, led by Ricardo Gómez-Carrera of the Paris School of Economics, wrote.

New Trump doctrine identifies ‘weak’ Europe’s problem: not enough racism
During Donald Trump’s first administration, commentators sagely advised that his words, were to be “taken seriously, not literally”. Experience suggests that formula puts the cart before the horse.
A new US National Security Strategy and a series of comments from US officials, presidential proxies and Trump himself, have culminated in what could be one of the most profound crises for Atlanticism, the security doctrine that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since the end of the second world war.
Where Trump’s point of departure was once the failure of Europe to contribute sufficiently to its own security, he has now embraced a more alarming vision.
Coloured both by racism and a staggering contempt for Europe’s political institutions and leaders, he has warned of the risk of civilisational collapse on a continent he barely knows, and that he has viewed more often from the window of an armoured sedan.

I've long suspected that MAGA will quickly fall apart following Trump's death, or at least splinter violently into dozens of factions. Trump is too much of a cult of personality for that power to be neatly handed down to any one successor; even if the GOP brass bend the knee to Vance, I still think the people themselves are going to cannibalize him and each other over not being "Trump" enough.
Maybe that's wishful thinking though. I can only hope.

The group whose singular cohesive thought is worshipping Trump.
They're literally incapable of any kind of solidarity with their own kin that doesn't revolve around the orange child rapist. Take cheetoh paedo out of the equation and they'll incredibly quickly devolve into infighting about purity and ideological differences. They're already doing that on small scale about ICE targeting white people or the fact the Epstein files weren't released yet. Imagine what will happen when the orange turd won't be there to be worshipped.
The results are quite simple:
- the shadow leadership will try to create a small unified front using people like JD Vance to represent them. Some MAGA will fall in line but most won't because Trump is more and more truthful about despising most of the people in his cabinet.
- The various MAGA grifters will start their own offshoots of the movement with slightly different ideologies, but instead of working together they'll be fighting each other like how Fuentes is fighting the mainline MAGA grifters right now. They'll run their own representatives and denounce all other factions, breaking up the voter unity, resulting in vote splitting.
- Some republicans will try to claw their way back to a more moderate position, hoping to gain some votes back, but reality is, they'll need a solid decade before anyone trusts them again, if not more.
All in all, Trumps death will be quite beneficial to everyone. Except maybe Putin.

Nobel peace prize winner says ‘Venezuela will breathe again’ as she is awarded prize in absentia – Europe live
The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado is “safe” and “will be” in Oslo after “a journey in a situation of extreme danger,” although she will not attend the Nobel peace prize ceremony this afternoon, organisers have said.
Machado has been seen only once in public since going into hiding in August last year amid a tense showdown with the president, Nicolás Maduro. Venezuela’s attorney general has said Machado, 58, would be considered a “fugitive” if she left the country to accept the award.

Is Trump’s stark new security strategy the end of the liberal world order? Europeans will need convincing
U.S. President Donald Trump’s new national security strategy appears to blow up some of the key principles behind 80 years of European collective defence, challenging the foundation of the continent’s relationship with the country.
But on whether the White House will — or even can — follow through on many of its more radical or transformative demands, many European capitals will likely need more convincing.
In a blistering attack, Trump’s new policy portrays Europe’s governments as weak and ineffective. Migration has destroyed the continent’s self-confidence, it claims, accusing the European Union of contributing to a loss of national sovereignty, weakened political freedoms and the diminished effectiveness of individual nation states.
Not a word is mentioned of Russia being an adversary — or the instigator of a horrific, ongoing war against its neighbour Ukraine.

Don't buy into his rule-by-decree framing. Just because Trump wants something doesn't mean he'll get it. If he can't get what he wants by bluster and bullying, he often moves on to the next distraction.
For example, he has loudly demanded that Tish James and James Comey should be thrown in jail. So far that's led to failure, with no sign it's going to change. And his invasion of US cities by the National Guard and ICE has not gone according to his maximalist plan, either. Neither has his tariff imbecility, or his attempts to influence foreign elections.
What the security strategy does reveal is that the higher reaches of the US government have been captured by pro-Russian fifth columnists. Patriots, plan and act accordingly.

'Brain scars': The hidden forms of sexism that harm women's health
If you've ever been catcalled late at night, you may be familiar with the stress response it can spark. Your defensive guard can go up and leave you feeling physically shaken and vulnerable.
All my female friends have had such experiences, and all of us have at one point or another walked home in the dark holding our keys in our hands. I even joined a karate club at university, in case the worst should happen, and through repeated drills learnt how to efficiently throw an opponent to the ground and hit the right pressure point to cause pain.
When unwanted sexual attention isn't immediately threatening, however, it is often shrugged off and ignored. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have a lasting psychological effect. Research now shows even everyday acts of sexism can have repercussions that stretch throughout people's bodies and lives.

How is there not a ubiquitous modding platform for Linux yet?
So all the talk is that Linux is great for gaming now, and tbf, it has come a long way. But there's a good portion of people like me and my friends who still regularly use windows because we love modding the crap out of all of our favorite games and that's just not feasible on Linux, vortex doesn't work and most modloaders have a bunch of bootstrap fixes you have to do, God forbid you want to debug your mod list and change often.
So I guess my question is, does anyone have any news on the state of Linux modding, has anyone out there got a git project in alpha or something coming up that might open the floodgates for us modders? Pretty please?
Personally I mostly do manual installations though.
Why is Linux different than Microsoft? Most of the games I play aren't "Linux" games, but the identical Windows software running through a compatibility layer on Linux.
The Steam client on Linux has the same "workshop" tab for adding mods. It's not in every game, but that's true on Windows too.
Bethesda games there is MO2 for linux.
Vortex can work really well on Linux and you can easily install it using steamtinkerlauncher.
For games like BG3 that have their own modding tool, you can run them using Wine/Proton.
You can also just mod manually like GTA3/GTA VC/GTA SA(I played these games on Linux, which is why I'm citing them).
Or you can use a tool made for Linux like Limo.

You're talking about modding in general, which is pretty similar in Linux to windows, besides some obligatory
learning about Wine/Proton contexts. Hint: just use protontricks and install your windows mods that way.
But what you are actually asking is "why hasn't someone else made a nice, easy tool for modding like I had on windows?"
And the answer to that is:
No one is stopping you from making it.
Welcome to Linux. You wanted freedom, you got it.
And the answer to that is:No one is stopping you from making it.
I'd argue that there's just no need. Vortex, Mod Organizer 2, and other major mod managers already work on Linux.
Personally, I think the need for the modding community is a fediverse-based modding network to compete with Nexus in case they get enshittified. And file sharing could run off of torrents to keep server costs down.
I agree, personally.
And the absence of as many formal modding tools is, I believe, a reflection that many other Linux gamers think this as well.
And the absence of as many formal modding tools is,
Again: most of those already work on Linux
You're just repeating a myth
Repeating a what now?
I might not be a hardcore modder, but I've been gaming on Linux since 2008, making Wine work, updating game status on winedb, and actually figuring out some of the first ways to run Homeworld under Wine.
most of those already work on Linux
What in the fuck are you talking about? Nexus? Vortex?
If you're going to be an asshat on the internet, bring receipts.
I've used atlauncher for minecraft without issues. r2modman works perfectly via app image for a lot of steam games as well.
worst comes to worst you can manually drop files in but the tools do exist. it just depends what you're modding

I got very confused by this title... I did search on DuckDuckGo and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_ga… was a top result but not far behind was en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modding which is not specific to video game.
Because this is the Linux community I would clarify that it's about game modding, not general modding.

I'm always confused by people saying that Vortex doesn't work on Linux, when I've used it for years now on both my Fedora desktop and my Steam Deck. I didn't even have to do anything outrageous to get it working. Install with Lutris like anything else made for Windows, press play, it works great.
Edit: Realized this sounded maybe judgmental, when I didn't mean it to. Not trying to make anyone feel bad in any way. More like encouragement, because once you get over the hump of figuring out how to use tools like Lutris to run games, running Vortex is the same process.
I'm not aware of general Linux specific tools for this (game specific ones do exist). However:
- Vortex does work on Linux: linuxvox.com/blog/vortex-mod-m…
- So does Curseforge: linuxvox.com/blog/how-to-insta…
They both work by you running them in wine and pointing them to the game files created by Steam (or Gog or any windows game installed via Wine or Proton) in the Linux filesystem (e.g. /home/yourname/.steam/steamapps/common/game) instead of windows filesystem (e.g. C:\program files\game)
Modloaders with "bootstrap" fixes will also work; they just have to be installed and run in the same proton/wine prefix as the game. I.e. if you install Cyberpunk 2077 via steam, the bootstrap type mods need to be installed into the game folder or fake-windows file system that Proton makes for the game. It even has it's own "drive C" folder for the rare times you need 3rd party tools. You also put tools into the game folder as you would on windows. If it has it's own custom exe you can tell wine/proton to run that instead of the game or even before the game in the same prefix.
I mod games extensively on Linux; they work just as they do in Windows. I've played heavily modded Cyperpunk 2077 to completion (all the mod tools work via proton - that takes a little tweaking to get working but is doable - and many mods you just drop into specific sub folders; I played with about 50 mods and I didn't find a single one that didn't work on Linux specifically), Stardew Valley, Rimworld and Minecraft for example of bredth. Stardew, Rimworld and Minecraft even have linux specific tools to help.
This is less a case of games run via Linux not being moddable, and more that it has it's own learning curve (in the same way modding on Windows has a learning curve). Once you understand how the linux filesystem and how proton/wine work, the world is your oyster. Protontricks and Winetricks are not just useful for getting games running or tweaking them, they're a modders best friend.

I've only had one game the last few years, where you should use the Linux native version but some big mods have hardcoded Windows paths. That and Wabbajack for Skyrim didn't work in wine back then but there's far more powerful native tooling now.
I mean, even Sims 4 Studio works in wine. If only wine would be a bit cli-friendlier (profile creation) and had a native way to stick to a certain release.
regularly use windows because we love modding the crap out of all of our favorite games and that's just not feasible on Linux
Linux isn't a game.

And I suppose I'll continue my plan of staying the hell away until this administration is long gone
This feels pretty hard to enforce, are they gonna let people self select what they provide or are they perhaps going to give a list of services to give accounts for? The latter would have me looking either like a ghost that disappeared about 7 years ago (for most public social media) or one that disappeared about 3 years ago (if Reddit is included)
What happens to people who don't use social media at all? Are they going to be treated with suspicion?
until this administration is long gone
Based on past performance, the next Democrat administration will repeal maybe 50% of these changes at most.
We're probably going to find out eventually. For instance, I have never once in my life had any manner of account for any traditional social media. Just reddit (not anymore) and here. That's it.
So good luck with that, fuckers.
I've only used Reddit (also not anymore) and here. None of the more traditional social media such as Facebook, Xitter, TikTok, and whatever else people are using these days.
Oh, I do have a LinkedIn. I only update it when I change jobs.
I basically made a new throw away account everytime I needed to post in some stupid support forum that only existed on reddit.
Unfortunately, many companies think reddit is a valid place for support forums these days. I try to avoid any such companies now.
Yet another reason to avoid ~~the US~~ social media as a ~~tourist~~ conscious being.
This is what I've been thinking about. What do they do with people that intentionally avoid social media? Is it simply presumed they're hiding something? To that end, would it make sense to run a 'fake' social media account where they just post and share the most politically neutral/milquetoast memes and commentary just so there's something in their history? I have always disliked the idea that one simply has to interact with social media or else be labeled an outcast/weirdo/suspicious person.
It feels like it comes from the same school of thought that the Internet and/or computers need to be used for everything...i don't like the way society continues moving away from "real" methods of paying bills and handling important personal affairs by replacing the old ways with "better" online alternatives. There are definitely benefits to both approaches, i just don't like when a "paper option" gets eliminated entirely in favor of electronic.
Just having a senior moment over here, please forgive my rambling 👴
People are into sunk costs and book well in advance. A lot of that 30% is no-money-back cancellations.
Wait until you see next year.
Is this 30% down in foreign tourist (like people crossing border with the intention of a tourist visit) or 30% down in tourist industry revenue?
If it's revenue that's huge. Because a lot of tourism is just Americans going to tourist destinations. Though I'm sure some of that drop is coming from Americans also not being able to afford vacations.
If it's 30% down of actual foreign tourist travel that's less than I'd expect too. But still beyond devastating to the tourist industry. Between that and the explosion of online gambling, I know Vegas is hurting so much right now.
Not yet rotten by algorithmic rot, I think as well. I see quite lovely comment sections and doesn't feel infested with bots.

My employer issues us with a wiped laptop that we can restore from cloud storage over our VPN once we're in-country. Before we return, we back it up and scrub it again. When I go to the US, I always bring a low-functioning burner phone as well.
How will they prove that I have any social media history?
Hard to say what the US government knows, or admits to knowing, about your social media usage. I almost completely stopped using social media a few years ago, except for Lemmy, and overwrote all my posts with lorem ipsum, as well as never having accessed it before that without using a VPN and doing some other obfuscation, so it'd take some effort to associate me with anything but some boring Facebook and LinkedIn updates I maintain so that certain people can still get in touch with me.
I see it as a win-win. I only have to open the app for a bit while on the loo. I don't give a damn about hemorrhoids, this is my shitposting time!
Pre-sleep bedtime screentime is now reserved for Balatro (likely equally terrible to social media feed) or light reading (probably miles above those, but pales in comparison to paperback).

I've been sending emails to hotel companies and urging them to oppose this. I urge you to contact your congresspeople and also companies in the travel, hospitality and tourism industry and demand they oppose this policy and more broadly ask them to stand up to Trump because he's causing people to rightfully boycott the US.
Also to everyone who is boycotting the US thank you so so much, I'm really grateful and as are so many Americans who also hate what the Trump regime is doing. The more people who boycott the more pressure it will put on companies to finally stand up against the Trump regime.
Lots of mods will dig through your history and ban based on activity in other subs. Having themed accounts helps segment your content. I had separate accounts for hobbies, anything political, and local stuff. I don't want those things linked.
I also deleted accounts every so often to start fresh. Except for the hobby one, that was neutral enough that I let it stay until I completely left Reddit.
Wow. Even China doesn't do that.
edit Might be that they don't need to get it from you

Hong Kong: UN rights chief voices concern over ‘draconian’ laws, in wake of deadly apartment fire
cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/47035078
[...]“The people of Hong Kong understandably want answers and accountability, so that the hundreds of victims are properly compensated and to avoid such a tragedy occurring again," UN human rights chief Volker Türk said.
Mr. Türk noted that the authorities appointed an independent review committee and initiated criminal and anti-corruption investigations into the fire – but have so far stopped short of appointing a commission of inquiry with full investigative powers.
[,,,]
“I am deeply concerned by reports that the territory’s draconian security laws are being applied against individuals who have called publicly for a transparent and independent inquiry, a review of construction oversight, government accountability, and support for affected residents, among other things,” he said.
“I urge the authorities to drop these cases against those seeking accountability.”
The UN rights chief stressed that several provisions and practices under the 2020 National Security Law and the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance do not comply with international human rights law, particularly the principles of legality, necessity and proportionality governing permissible restrictions on rights.
[...]
“The cumulative impacts of these laws reflect a systemic erosion in enjoyment of human rights, including the fundamental freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly and association in what was once a vibrant hub for civil society, vigorous debate on public policy, and independent media in the region,” he said.
The High Commissioner also expressed concerns about electoral changes which have reduced the proportion of directly elected District Council seats to less than 20 per cent of its full membership.
“The compelled dissolution of major political parties has effectively eliminated organized political opposition,” he said.
[...]

What’s especially wild is how small the actual city of Miami is.
Out of 175,692 registered voters, 37,496 cast ballots on Tuesday, a turnout of 21.3%, according to official records.
Turns out the population in the 2020 census was 442,241 people. In a metropolitan area of like 6.5 million people, the city itself is absurdly small.

Africa’s New Data Dependency – Technology Colonialism
Data colonialism on the African continent has moved from abstraction into formal state policy through binding agreements signed without public consent, parliamentary scrutiny, or meaningful legal protection for citizens. Nigeria’s memorandum of understanding with France on tax administration data, alongside healthcare data-sharing agreements signed by Kenya and Rwanda with United States agencies, reflects a pattern of external control over sovereign information systems. These arrangements represent a transfer of strategic national assets rather than technical cooperation. Historical experience across former colonies shows that control over taxation, health records, and population data has always preceded deeper forms of domination, even when formal sovereignty remained intact.

Capitalism only benefits capitalists.
Fewer people are poor despite the capitalists, not because of.
Their giant hoards of wealth exemplify how many more could have been pulled out of poverty in the last 100-150 years.

Nah, it can benefit the rank and file provided the wealth was poorly distributed before by creating more jobs. This is exactly what happened when it was adopted by most nations in the 19th century.
China’s for-profit business investments in Africa since 2000 are an example if capitalist policies bringing people out of poverty. Im not sure your claim has the validity you think it does.

Who the fuck said anything about petit bourgeoisie? A high EARNER still has to work, dipshit. Still has to produce something to get paid. We're not talking about landlords here, or shitheads living off investments, but people like DOCTORS. Do you consider medical professionals "petit bourgeoisie" just because they earn more than the average?
And even high earners can be in the "gee I hope I can eat this week" category.
But please do skip my point about cost of living being important when it comes to wages, and fight a completely made up argument you put in my mouth because fictional BS is easier to fight than what I actually said.

The top 10% earners make approx. $120k a year. Which seems a lot, given there are people in India who make less than 1% of that in a year.
But that wealth disparage is NOTHING compared to the difference between said high earner (whose real income will be maybe 1/3 of what they make, after taxes, rent, etc.), and one of the 60k.
My point is still to blame the members of the 60k, not those who make $60k.

We need a tax law that grows exponentially. After certain points, it should collect almost 100% of the “controllable assets” (assets you can control, not necessarily owed).
But of course, we will never get it. People who have the will to climb the ladder tend to have less empathy for the masses, and they need to pay back to their stakeholders to help them get on top. It’s another paradox we need to deal with.
TBH the only thing that can fix humanity is extraterrestrial life lol.

The term also often stated to be of the lower middle class - however keep in mind that this class definition is the traditional British/European class separation, NOT the American style!
The European style middle class covers those who are not of higher nobility (royal family, dukedoms, etc.), are not directly required to work FOR someone else (albeit certain upper middle class members often take governmental positions that can be considered employment), and in Marx' eyes, those who own the means of production without contributing directly to the production itself, beyond ownership.
The lower echelons of the middle class therefore are those who own small scale businesses, shops, merchants.
Now I don't know what kind of doctors you're looking at, but even the ones with private practices do not belong in the (European style) middle class.
This is in stark contrast with the US style class division where the nobility (upper class) was erased and replaced with the upper half of the middle class, the lower parts of the petite bourgeois becoming the bottom of said upper class, while middle class got redefined as those whose wealth doesn't exactly reach the "millionaire" label (though with the devaluation of the US dollar this limit is shifting upwards nowadays), but also isn't exactly "poor" (so it's above ~$100k).
However even this middle class, in the European style class division, would still be lower class - aka workers. Middle class begins when you make a living without actually working. Let that be through investments, inheritance, generational wealth, fake and non-directing (and sometimes even directing) executive positions, or something as simple as owning a small business with people in your employ.
Again, an overwhelming majority of doctors, lawyers, etc., even with a private practice, will be directly working, so they're not exactly middle class, therefore aren't petit bourgeoisie.

We often have to pass around donation envelope to help a neighbor afford a visit and/or prescription, and if more than one is sick at a time, those donations aren't enough and have to be split.

The concentration on wealth leads to concentration of influence, meaning politics and media. We’ve had a shrinking number of independent major news organizations since the 1980s. A 1983 analysis showed that about 50 companies “controlled more than half” of U.S. media. Today, there are estimates of a handful of people owning the vast majority. Not to mention, they can apparently choose to purchase massive Social Media platforms (like Twitter) immediately before an election.
Right now, though, we have this problem where such silos already exist. They use their influence, vast as it is, to protect and enrich themselves—PACs, Super PACs, gratuities, lobbying firms, and more recently meme coins. All acting as a conduit to influence politics and legislation. We can’t make progress while these issues continue to stand in our way, can we? So, what do you do?

No single person should be able to control more than 10M, companies shouldn't be worth over 1 billion
Anything over that, goes to taxes.
It's a single basic rule that requires more rules below for sure to ensure it works well, but this should be codified in a world wide constitution.
This way, nobody gets crazy amounts of money, nobody will have to be poor because the government will have a huge income that it can use for universal healthcare, education, universal basic income, etc...
Crime would go down the drain because nobody NEEDS to be a criminal anymore. There will still be a few anti social elements but good luck finding people wanting that life if they can just have a good, safe, and happy life.

Bribery and corruption? How even, and why take the risk?
There is no logical reason why anyone should have to be allowed to control this much wealth.
Investment companies must all be dismantled and all their funds transferred to independent non profit organisations that, again, won't be able to control more than over a billion. Government can transfer money to these foundations so that loads of people can have investments for startups or whatnot
We'd need similar simple rules for governments too. All governments must be democracies, and all should follow a world constitution where we have a few basic rules that make sure nobody will ever get too much power.
It doesn't require a lot of changes at the top. Basically these three rules, all the rest flows out of those rules. We can keep capitalism and use it's raw power to generate resources for everyone.
What this needs is political will, this needs people to want this, need this.

Describing it in terms of wealth is kind of dumb. It gives the idea that the systems that caused this (Imperialism, colonialism, capitalism) are the solution. Like, the global South just needs "investment". The numbers are this bad because of a century of western "investment" in its exploitation the global South.
There isn't a number attached to this that somehow fixes the problem when we reach it. This is about what essentially amounts to slavery and subjugation of the majority of this planet. The language of these news articles is so passive. Like it's describing the amount of stars in the galaxy.
