Is Big Business spending more on groceries every year? Oh, maybe housing costs are getting to be too much?

Fuck Big Business. They can rot in hell.

in reply to BrikoX

Yeah, ever since industrial interventionism became cool again the news has just been saturated with lobbyists (calling themselves "industry groups") explaining why they need taxpayer funding.

It's to be expected, I guess. With any luck it usually won't work.

Anthropic Exec Forces AI Chatbot on Gay Discord Community, Members Flee

Users voted to restrict Anthropic's Claude to its own channel, but Jason Clinton, Anthropic’s Deputy Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and a moderator in the Discord, overrode them. According to members of this Discord community who spoke with 404 Media on the condition of anonymity, the Discord that was once vibrant is now a ghost town. They blame the chatbot and Clinton’s behavior following its launch.

“To me it shines a light on the god-complex that AI C-suite members seem to have, and their willingness to ignore people's consent and opinions as they bulldoze their way of pushing AI,” Reese, a member of the community, told 404 Media in the aftermath.

Stupid question on Wayland/steamvr: How to force Screen Sharing - portal (I think thats what it is called) to open again

Ok, so I have Kubuntu installed running wayland and setup steamvr. The first few times it gave me the screen sharing portal, but through NOT reading carefully I accidentally setup all screens as the same one instead of the 2 different displays and 1 mirror display. OBS has this wonderful little button to trigger this to open to change which screen is shared, does anyone know how to do this for steamvr? (if you need info plz supply the command to retrieve it) I will say that wayland is working great for me so far except for my error, out of the 6 vr games I have tested (they ran badly on my previous system) only Into the Radius 2 has a slight flashing/flickering issue the other games that were almost or completely unplayable under my last system (RTX 4070ti super) are smooth as butter now.

I have temporarily gone back to X11 due to not being able to access my desktop through WLX-Overlay-s. Any help would be appreciated.

System Settings > Security & Privacy > Application Permissions

Find Steam or Stean VR in that list, click on it and then you should see a button "Screen Sharing:" "Manage 1 Session"

Monster of 2025: Endless subscriptions

What vexes me are the companies that sell physical products for a hefty, upfront fee and subsequently demand more money to keep using items already in your possession. This encompasses those glorified alarm clocks, but also: computer printers, wearable wellness devices, and some features on pricey new cars.

Subscription-based business models are great for businesses because they amount to consistent revenue streams. They’re often bad for consumers for the same reason: You have to pay companies, consistently. We’re effectively being $5 per month-ed (or more) to death, and it’s only going to get worse. Industry research suggests the average customer spent $219 per month on subscriptions in 2023. In 2024, the global subscription market was an estimated $492 billion. By 2033, that figure is expected to triple.

“After nearly 35 years of experience with federal law enforcement in this judicial district, encompassing service as a prosecutor and a judge, I have never encountered anything like this,” Judge Brown, who was appointed by President Trump in 2019, wrote.

The judge also wrote that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had presented false information about Mr. Clarke’s arrest and had ignored court orders by failing to present him for a hearing and provide photographs of the cell. He questioned why the agency should not be held in contempt.

Israeli PM Netanyahu announces $35 billion gas deal with Egypt as US pushes for summit

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a $35 billion gas deal with Egypt on Wednesday evening as the US pushes for a summit between the leaders of the two countries.

In a televised statement, Netanyahu hailed the agreement as “the largest gas deal in Israel’s history.” He said the deal was valued at 112 billion shekels (about $34.6 billion).

The deal involves American energy company Chevron and will supply gas to Egypt.

US President Donald Trump has been trying to arrange a summit between Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as he pursues regional peace deals and an expansion of the Abraham Accords.

404 in apt

in reply to Da Oeuf

How long since you ran 'apt update'? I have envountered issues where the local apt cache is stale, causing it to contain packages which are old and removed from the upstream repo. You need to update your cache and try to install again.
in reply to mumblerfish

Only a couple of days ago. I switched back and forth to a mirror, did autoclean and autoremove and disabled deb-src in sources.list and everything appears to be fine now but I have no idea why!
in reply to Da Oeuf

From what I'm reading, autoclean would remove any local packages which couldn't be download (i.e. they are out of date). This would indeed fix the issue, but your packages could still be missing critical udpates.

When possible you should definitely run 'sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade' to get the latest stuff installed. If it says you're up to date then that's awesome and no further action is needed.

in reply to GooeyGlob

Just ran dist-upgrade and all is well :) Thanks for the tip.
in reply to mumblerfish

This is almost always the issue. Apt is not like yum and pacman, you must first run apt update or it will inevitably fall out of sync with the current packages when you try to run install or upgrade, etc.
in reply to Da Oeuf

My gut tells me this might be a DNS issue. Can you reach deb.debian.org/ in the browser?

Edit: After reading the text on that site, a working website might not indicate a working package repository.
