They call it the Royale with Cheese because they kicked the Americans out in 1966 and control their own nuclear arsenal.

Looking for an address book app that cutomizable

in reply to Cactus_Head

I switched to using Radicale a year ago, and I use my android contacts app to add and maintain that info. CardDAV has enough fields for me to add.
in reply to Cactus_Head

I've written a python/Qt script that keeps lists like those you mention. It's sort of a poor-man's database manager, but its only database is a collection of csv files.

  • You can use an address list to keep track of contacts' phone numbers, mailing addresses, and eMail addresses.
  • You can use a calendar to remind you about events and appointments including date, time, and duration. You can add notes about finding the location and other prerequisites to attendance.
  • You can keep separate passwords in a password list for every website you visit and every piece of gear you own.
  • You can keep links to favorite websites in a bookmark list.

When I try to include a direct link to my python script, which does that, my responses and in fact the whole posted discussion are taken down. … something to do with self promotion of untested software I suppose. But you can find it in the Cheese Shop (See Wikipedia “Python Package Index.”) under tonto2.

Wouldn't china be heading for a similar bubble pop like the US with there huge investment into ai?

Or perhaps they have actually found a large enough market to cover the cost of development.

This entry was edited (6 days ago)
in reply to pineapple

The level of investment in AI in China is a fraction of that in the US, and they're already starting to make money. The whole dynamic in China is different. Instead of chasing unicorns and promising stuff like AGI, companies in China are treating AI as shared infrastructure that you actually build useful stuff on top of. Hence why models are being released as open source, they're not seen as the key source of revenue. It's closer to what we see with Linux based infrastructure where companies build services like AWS on top of Linux. China also has far more application for AI in stuff like robotics, manufacturing, and other types of automation. There are simply more niches to apply this tech in than there are in the west that's largely deindustrialized now.
in reply to pineapple

The difference is: China has tons of machines and factory robots to plug AI models into, the US doesn't. Meaning China gets to use their AI for actual useful purposes while the US can only use their's for speculation and slop generation.

I'm still waiting for the debate but I'm really starting to like Lewis. I bet McPherson is done, but I'm still registering people to make sure she is. :D
in reply to Avid Amoeba

She's an anti-vax, convoy supporter who wanted to withdraw Canada from UN and UN-affiliated groups like the WHO. She famously hosted Christine Anderson from the AfD. She is stridently anti abortion and social conservative, and strongly pro-Israel.

I don't see why she would be better than Poilievre, it seems she would somehow be worse. At least Poilievre condemned the AfD meeting at the time.

I suspect that she is rather strongly allied with the religious right in the US, and therefore she would be even more likely to suck Trump's nuts from the back. I don't see indication that she has any national pride or vision that unifies Canada. And I've never heard anything interesting from her on economics, which is arguably our most important file right now.

MAJOR EDIT NEEDED: I'm a moron who thought the Lewis under discussion was Leslyn Lewis, instead of Avi Lewis. I have no excuse. The above was not meant to apply to Avi Lewis. Please downvote and ignore. I don't know anything about Avi Lewis.

I'm no fan of Heather but I can't find anything about her being anti-vax. One of the top things showing up is she wanting the COVID vaccine to remain free. Can't find anything on withrawing from WHO or hosting AfD's leader. I find info on her being pro reproductive rights and she was one of the first MPs to stand for Palestinians and she's asked for sanctions on Israel. Are you sure we're talking about the same Heather McPherson from the NDP?
in reply to Avid Amoeba

My God I'm an idiot.

I was talking about Leslyn Lewis, and I'm out to lunch. I saw "right wing" and went in a completely different direction.

Punish me with downvotes, I deserve it. I'm leaving it up.

Nope. Mistakes happen and we're all trying to be excellent to each other. You get upvotes for your excellent ownup. 🤗

Maybe edit the original comment so that if folks don't read down far enough they won't take the misinformation with them?

No doubt, they are bouyed and inspired by their US Nazi colleagues.
It won't be the same in Canada though. /s

Isn't the hate crime bill the one that was meant to curb protests like the pro-Palestine one in front of the synagogue used to sell settlements real estate?

FOSS Day One Journal Alternative

cross-posted from: mander.xyz/post/46344922

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good open source journaling app that can rival Day One? I'm looking for something end-to-end encrypted—I know Day One claims to be E2E, but I'm not sure I trust it. I use Joplin for my general note taking, but It's not really a suitable alternative for journaling.

I gave up on FOSS alternatives and journal exclusively in Obsidian. it's not open source, but the file format is simple text files. Which for me, was a must.
in reply to Giuseppe Lasagna

Thanks for all the recs everyone. I'll take a look at them. It doesn't seem like there's exactly something that's a direct replacement for Day One Journal. But, maybe some of these could work as well.

I will never understand the internet's hive mind hate boner for this game. People bitch about CoD, Fortnight, and having nothing new to play, but then something new comes out and it's immediately a failure since it didn't instantly pass CoD's player count.

The damn thing has been out all of like 36 hours. It's like everyone in the gaming community has the attention and patience of a Netflix exec now.

in reply to Prox

Right? Like idk man, sorry the end ad spot of the show wasn’t some game you decided it should be and instead was some studios first game they wanted to make that looks… fine? Like it’s a free game and a new studio isn’t it? Chill out. Goddamn.

Xfwl4 - The roadmap for a Xfce Wayland Compositor

We, the Xfce team are excited to share some great news!

After careful consideration, we’ve decided on a meaningful way to use the generous donations from our community: funding longtime Xfce core developer Brian Tarricone to create xfwl4, a brand-new Wayland compositor for Xfce.

This initiative will utilize a significant portion of the project’s donated funds, but we believe it’s an important investment in Xfce’s future.

The goal is, that xfwl4 will offer the same functionality and behavior as xfwm4 does, or as much as possible considering the differences between X11 and Wayland. Using xfwl4 should feel just like using xfwm4 on X11. We even plan to reuse the existing xfwm4 configuration dialogs and xfconf settings to ensure a seamless transition.

Xfwl4 will not be based on the existing xfwm4 code. Instead, it will be written from scratch in rust, using smithay building blocks.

Alberta justices speak up about independence after premier muses about directing the courts

“Court of Appeal and King’s Bench [judges] are chosen by the federal government. In fact, I just wrote a letter to [Prime Minister] Mark Carney saying maybe we should look at a way, now that we’ve got some openings on King’s Bench, for us to have a joint process to choose those judges so we start choosing judges in Alberta that reflect the values of how we want them to operate here.

Emphasis mine.

Like wtf... that is exactly what is NOT supposed to happen. They shouldn't be ruling on values, they should be ruling on the god damn law.

lol Americans acting like they’re not the ones who taught everyone else how to genocide
in reply to But_my_mom_says_im_cool

and in turn, the us & israel both learned it from britain & other european countries. european colonisers have been teaching each other how to maximise their cruelty, murder & land theft since at least the greek empire & the concept of western "civilisation" 😮‍💨
in reply to tae glas [siad/iad]

Meh, mid take to be honest. All of humanity is like that. Not just the West.
in reply to MinnesotaGoddam

You can tell an American when they dodge responsibility for their atrocities by citing ancient history. I mean im focused on the living people you fucked, including my own people. Im sure to you we are just as distant and meaningless as someone in the 1600s, and that’s what makes your people such monsters. You don’t care about the blood you shed, all you do is point the finger elsewhere, a brown person if convenient.
in reply to But_my_mom_says_im_cool

so you go from "americans taught the world about genocide" to "pfff the romani aren't people". how european.
in reply to cm0002

One of the reasons I no longer work at a non profit group of homeless shelters in the US is because the board fucking contracted consulting with a private security company that worked with and had many IDF people in it, for our shelter security protocols.

That and I was adamantly opposed to using any Microsoft service to handle any of our data on our homless and in need 'clients'.

I was about 5 years ahead of the curve on 'MSFT is a data / PII security nightmare', just look at basically all of Europe right now, but you can perhaps imagine how that attitude doesn't fly so well in Seattle.
