Need help with NTFS and permissions please

in reply to Tippon

Since you can run the apps (glitchy as they may be), nothing is wrong with the read perms on the drive. Maybe write perms or exec perms? But ntfs perms don't map neatly onto POSIX perms, so it's hard to say. Maybe try setting the gid to the vboxuser group id and see if that helps?

You might also check out the mount manpage and look at the section about "Generic Mount Options"; this is the more in-depth explanation of the "options" column in fstab, and the defaults option (which depends on the distro) can hide stuff like nouser, which prevents users from mounting the drive.

Finally, look into ACLs and how to manage those for interoperability across Windows and POSIX systems.

Best case scenario, fixing it so your user has all access to the drive with the user, exec options fixes your issues. Otherwise, you've just gotta do the learning about ACLs and POSIX perms

Thanks for replying, it looks like I've got some homework to do :D

I did look at the fstab page, but I didn't understand enough to get an answer. I'll look at the mount page tonight, thank you :)

Apple’s M3 Silicon Surrenders to Linux: A Technical Milestone for Open Source

In a major technical breakthrough, the open-source community has successfully booted a graphical Linux desktop on Apple's M3 silicon. This deep dive explores how developers reverse-engineered the proprietary chip in record time, the implications for the developer workstation market, and what this means for the future of ARM-based computing.

These people should get grant funding for reducing e-waste and Apple should pay for it.

If everybody at ICE protests showed up with masks and a gun would there be more or less violence?

Would protestors be safer? Thousands of masked people with guns. Chaos?

I can’t help but think that the only solution to ICE is a “well regulated militia” in combination with political reform, with both being necessary.

Peaceful mass protests are the only way to stop this authoritarian takeover. If it gets violent the government will always have more firepower.

Trump and his cronies want the protests to become violent. They are hoping for an excuse to throw in jail or kill anyone they do not like. Do not do them that favor.

Nope, peaceful protests have never worked at any point in history, and you are sold that they do, because it serves the interest of those in power who do not want to be challenged.

It's really weird how Mozilla is trying to market to the punk-anarchists and the AI techbros at the same time. It won't work.

If you saw the keynote at FOSDEM 2025 from Mozilla, you'd almost think their entire senior management are entirely untechnical and have got through their career by repeating buzzwords they heard in other meetings. Totally vacuous, AI trend-filled, and nothing tangible at all. It does not surprise me that it has continued.

I really hope they fix their direction or one of the new browsers in development can become useful enough and different enough to use and be used - having the open web be accessible using only one family of products would be a difficult-to-undo disaster.

Yugopnik tweeting nazi shit

Some people don't believe me when I try to warn them about the content creator grift. I don't care, I'm coming for all of them if they start spouting shit like this to their audience. They have a responsibility towards their viewers.

Second time I see him tweet shit like this.

At this point he should just stop pretending he's any sort of leftist. His mental health will thank him.

archive link so he can't scrub it off the internet: archive.ph/XWZD6 (still loading as of posting but should be ready eventually)

Thumb-Key 5.1.1 Release

A curated list of awesome FOSS games

I decided to write down a list of complete (no alpha/beta), playable (no proprietary dependencies), FOSS videogames.

I added all the games I could find online + all of the games that came to my memory.

Feel free to have a look to see if there's something you didn't know. And please suggest anything I missed, but please do not suggest pre-release or unfinished games.

Thank you!

YouTube - OpenAI Showed Up At My Door. Here's Why They're Targeting People Like Me - More Perfect Union

I recognize YouTube isn't popular and tends to get down votes. I'm not sure how else to share this. I think what OpenAI (and others) are trying to do to further rig the system in their favor and screw us needs to be known. So hopefully the information in the video gets out and we all have time to act.

BLUF (bottom line up front): OpenAI and others are targeting watchdogs and critics through subpoenas. They're trying to silence critics and kill legistaltion so they can reshape government in their favor. They are trying to push back regulations on AI in many areas to allow them to continue the path they're on. Public pressure is mounting for AI regulation and shit is about to get real.
