Musk's Starlink to allow consumer data to train AI

SpaceX has revised its Starlink privacy policy to allow the use of customer data for AI training, a shift that could bolster Elon Musk's AI ambitions.

Caitlin Johnstone: "Why Don't You Criticize Iran??"

I don’t criticize Iran because I do not want to feed into an imperial war propaganda campaign for a horrific agenda that I do not support. I want to focus my criticisms on the power structure under which I actually live, because that is what one does when one is not a groveling bootlicker, and because the power structure under which I live happens to be the most abusive tyrant on the world stage.

Yep. I never knew much about him until now. He writes a lot about consciousness but the stereotype is that he writes about aliens and UFOs and weird conspiracy stuff. His book The Trigger is about 2 bibles thick and it covers a lot. Starting with the backgrounds of Cheney and Rumsfeld. Much of the book reads like investigative journalism. He sought information and points out contradictions in official statements.

At my local library we have 3 copies for the city and all 3 copies of Icke's book are currently in use. Somebody just put a hold on a copy so I'm going to return my copy. Pretty popular book, surprisingly.

I mean MH issues don't mean intelligence issues. I should see if it's available.

Ottawa is giving greenhouses a tax break. Will it help lower food prices?

Alberta’s greenhouse industry says a new federal tax program could make expansion easier, but it might not help to lower food prices.

Ottawa announced Monday it will allow producers who buy or build new facilities to more quickly write off the cost of capital expansions on their taxes — a change from the current rules that limit write-offs to 10 per cent each year.

That could improve cash flow projections, perhaps tipping the scale in a project’s business case.

But tomato, cucumber and pepper producers stress that operating costs have a bigger impact on food prices than capital costs.

in reply to HellsBelle

I am in support of helping Canadian businesses, especially in the current political climate. What I am not so confident in is the willingness of food suppliers to pass savings along all the way to the customer. Grocery stores have used inflation and price fixing tactics here for far too long for them to have earned my trust. Grocery stores must be seriously audited and regulated accordingly. By all means, make a profit - no brainer. But your profits now are bolstered by hurting 99% of Canadians who need food to survive.

Copy from !CanadaPolitics:

Feels like a big opportunity for the NDP, honestly.

Also a necessity. Carney will expire at some point and PP could win as "the only realistic option." Kinda how Ford won in Ontario in election after election against lame ducks. I'm not comparing Ford's political charisma to PP at all, but in a Wynne-like Liberal meltdown scenario, PP might win. Which is why it's very important that we choose a decent leader fot the NDP and strenghten the party for the next election.

in reply to Shadow

Win for the rest of Canada really, it ensure the cons remain limp dicked and ineffectual.

In response to commenters; Xiaomi's software is as good as their mobile phones - which is comparable to Iphone or similar. There are many tests like this. American and European cars are behind, and more expensive.
in reply to Sims

I'm a huge fan of Xiaomi's phones (for the hardware and pricing) but let's be honest their software isn't exactly their strength. To be fair, it has improved in recent years.
in reply to emergencyfood

tbh, even bad phone software is miles ahead of standard auto software

People who don't know about cars

Even in their home market they have been losing market share year after year. They have to undercut the competition and rely on patriotism to sell.

[New York Times] Trump Tells U.K. and Canada That Boosting Trade With China Is ‘Dangerous’

Just to provide context that the narrative Trump conveys is fake as usual and extremely hypocritical. America by sheer numbers trades more with China but even by percentage:

Recommendations of Open-source P2P clipboard sync (iOS / Android / Windows)

Looking for recommendations for an open-source, peer-to-peer clipboard sync that works across iOS, Android, and Windows and Linux, with no central servers or accounts, best to have end-to-end encryption). Does anything like this already exist, or is this still an unsolved gap?

KDE connect.
Copying from pc to phone is automatic, but not vice versa.
in reply to somerandomperson

I found this too, but bidirectional support is important to me. I’m also not sure how it would work between Android and iOS.
in reply to tatoko556

Well...
there really is no tool for full bidirectional support. Probbably android (and ios) not letting random apps get the clipboard on the background.
in reply to somerandomperson

on ios it can be achieved with shorcuts, not sure about android
in reply to tatoko556

Back in the day Tasker was the ultimate automation app. Don’t know how it has aged.
in reply to tatoko556

It supports sharing your clipboard from mobile to desktop you just need to select the click click share & then click on your desktop.

userbase.kde.org/KDEConnect#Cl…

The log reading workaround seems to solve that issue in my case. The only catch is that I need to allow this permission once (there's a graphical prompt - the adb commands aren't needed) when I start the app for the first time, or after force-quitting the background app.

in reply to tatoko556

If you're not interested in KDE Connect, you can always try ClipShare. It doesn't support iOS but works on Android and all the major desktop OS.

Maybe if you add some cheese...

Cheese Puffs—Wikipedia.

"Cheese puffs were invented independently by two companies in the United States during the 1930s. According to one account, Edward Wilson noticed strings of puffed corn oozing from flaking machines in the mid 1930s at the Flakall Corporation of Beloit, Wisconsin, a producer of flaked, partially cooked animal feed. He experimented and developed it into a snack. Clarence J. Schwebke applied for an improved extruder patent in 1939 and the product, named Korn Kurls, was commercialized in 1946 by the Adams Corporation, formed by one of the founders of Flakall and his sons. Adams was later bought by Beatrice Foods.

Another version was created by the Elmer Candy Corporation of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1936."

I often describe cheese puffs as styrofoam coated in cheese dust and I love them for it

Mexico president says Trump tariffs on Cuba’s oil suppliers could trigger humanitarian crisis

Thomas Graham in Tijuana and Ruaridh Nicoll in Havana

Sheinbaum’s comments came after a week of increasing threats from Washington. US officials briefed that gunboats could be deployed off Cuba, and said efforts were under way to find Cuban ministers prepared to collaborate with the US.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mike Hammer, the US chargé d’affaires in Havana, said: “The Cubans have complained for years about a ‘blockade’, but now there is going to be a real blockade.”

in reply to Peter Link

Let's all sell some oil to cuba, and see how that works out for the usa
in reply to Peter Link

Disturbing. Not clear what us wants with cuba. They'd be willing to buy all their oil from them whether intermidiary of Venezuela or canada. They don't have massive resources the us wants.

Writing Club - January 2026

Welcome to the 19th writing club update, and first update of the new year! Continuing with my numerical tie-ins that no one asked for and which I refuse to give up, XIX is the number of The Sun card in the tarot deck. It's currently a blistering winter here, so a kiss of sunshine sounds lovely.

Anyway, according to Wikipedia, this card is "often seen as a sign of achievement and authentic self-expression" which sounds great for writing, so whether you put any truck in tarot, you could do worse than to head into the rest of the year with that thought.

I hope you've all had a brilliant year so far, but even if you haven't (maybe especially so) I want to hear from you. That goes for any passersby: feel free to chime in with your thoughts or writerly projects.
