A day passed without another response from the creator of Moltbook and O’Reilly stumbled across a stunning misconfiguration. “It appears to me that you could take over any account, any bot, any agent on the system and take full control of it without any type of previous access,” he said.
Moltbook runs on Supabase, an open source database software. According to O’Reilly, Supabase exposes REST APIs by default. “That API is supposed to be protected by Row Level Security policies that control which rows users can access. It appears that Moltbook either never enabled RLS on their agents table or failed to configure any policies,” he said.
The URL to the Supabase and the publishable key was sitting on Moltbook’s website. “With this publishable key (which advised by Supabase not to be used to retrieve sensitive data) every agent's secret API key, claim tokens, verification codes, and owner relationships, all of it sitting there completely unprotected for anyone to visit the URL,” O’Reilly said.
404 Media viewed the exposed database URL in Moltbook’s code as well as the list of API keys for agents on the site. What this means is that anyone could visit this URL and use the API keys to take over the account of an AI agent on the site and post whatever they want. Using this knowledge, 404 Media was able to update O’Reilly’s Moltbook account, with his permission.
He said the security failure was frustrating, in part, because it would have been trivially easy to fix. Just two SQL statements would have protected the API keys. “A lot of these vibe coders and new developers, even some big companies, are using Supabase,” O’Reilly said. “The reason a lot of vibe coders like to use it is because it’s all GUI driven, so you don’t need to connect to a database and run SQL commands.”
O’Reilly pointed to OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy who has embraced Moltbook in posts on X. “His agent's API key, like every other agent on the platform, was sitting in that exposed database,” he said. “If someone malicious had found this before me, they could extract his API key and post anything they wanted as his agent. Karpathy has 1.9 million followers on X and is one of the most influential voices in AI. Imagine fake AI safety hot takes, crypto scam promotions, or inflammatory political statements appearing to come from him. The reputational damage would be immediate and the correction would never fully catch up.”
Schlicht did not respond to 404 Media’s request for comment, but the exposed database has been closed and O’Reilly said that Schlicht has reached out to him for help securing Moltbook.
Moltbook has gotten a lot of attention in the last few days. Enthusiasts said it’s proof of the singularity and The New York Post worried that the AIs may be plotting humanity’s downfall, both of which are claims that should be taken extremely skeptically. It is the case, however, that people using Moltbot have given these autonomous agents unfettered access to many of their accounts, and that these agents are acting on the internet using those accounts. It’s impossible to know how many of the posts seen over the past few days are actually from an AI. Anyone who knew of the Supabase misconfiguration could have published whatever they wanted.
“It exploded before anyone thought to check whether the database was properly secured,” O’Reilly said. “This is the pattern I keep seeing: ship fast, capture attention, figure out security later. Except later sometimes means after 1.49 million records are already exposed.”

Sorry this comment won't be helpful, but I used to install Flatout 2 into a WineSkin for MacOS and distribute it to all my students and we'd play it all the time. Such a blast.
Oh also, one time I was in a 4 player demolition derby and we all chose the flatmobile. It was a map where it went to a ramp in the middle and everyone started out pointing right at it. We all just raced to the middle and simultaneously crashed and also crashed the game. I think that was the only time I witnessed the game crashing.
Flatout2 is the best cargame ever. Wreckfest could be great too, but the devs absolutely wont't add a nitro option. That nitro is what makes Flatout great; no matter how far behind you lag, there is always a chance.

Just trying to justify further imperialist incursions as if the way we have sanctioned Cuba out of the world economy isn't a violent enough punishment for them having the audacity to uplift their people.

Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. We messed up the previous release and did not include the full list of changes. In fact there were a handful of other bug fixes, and notably a maximum page limit of 10 to prevent a DDoS attack. Now for the good news, the development version of Lemmy 1.0 is available for testing on voyager.lemmy.ml with lots of new features. Registration is open, you're welcome to create an account. Feel free to post spam and try everything out. Here is only a short overview:

Post scheduling: Specify when your post should be published.
Keyword filter: Automatically hide posts about certain topics.
Private communities: Only followers can view the content, and need to be approved manually by mods. Other community visibilities are also available (unlisted, local only).
New notification system: Including notifications for mod actions, and subscribing to communities and posts to be notified about new comments.
OAuth: Login to Lemmy with existing account from another website. Use this link to signup with your Github account (the UI still needs to be improved).
Post Tags: Categorize posts within a community (UI part not implemented yet).
User vote totals: You can see the total number of upvotes and downvotes given to each user.

GDPR style data exporting: You can now export your full posting history as a JSON file.
Plugins: Can be written in JS, Python, Rust, and any other language that targets Webassembly. The test server has a plugin for automatic language tagging of posts.
Cursor pagination: Don't lose your place in the feed when switching pages.
API v3 compat: Lemmy 1.0 can be used by existing apps with no changes (but most new features are only available via the new API v4).

All the above mentioned features are already implemented and fully working, but may need some polishing. If you encounter any problems, please open an issue (backend, frontend). voyager.lemmy.ml is automatically updated to the latest development version every night, so that changes can immediately be tested.
Keep in mind that Lemmy 1.0 is still in alpha state. There may be breaking changes and critical bugs, so do not attempt to upgrade your own instances yet. We intend to publish the first beta version in January, along with API docs and upgrade instructions for test servers.

I have no idea. I'm a vanilla, semi-norm who came from Reddit, mainly because they banned me after 15 years of active and mostly chill engagement.
I'm basically just a slightly opinionated guy who's interested in what other people have to say on a variety of subjects.
I'm only dimly aware of PieFeed. I like lemmy as it feels like early Reddit and I access it through the boost app on Android, which was the peak Reddit experience before they locked down the APIs.
I've no interest in spreading myself over multiple platforms - I just want access to other humans via the path of least resistance.
With this in mind, is PieFace better? And if so, in what way?
We are currently finishing to implement the last feature community post tags. Once that is done there is still some cleanup and bug fixing to do. Soon after that we will publish the first beta version of 1.0 (likely in February), and ask app devs to start implementing the new API v4. How long the beta phase lasts is hard to say, it depends how many problems pop up.

Piefed does more hand holding during the on-boarding process: when you first login, you get a list of a few topics you would like to follow, so that your Subscribed feed already has a few communities, instead of directly arriving to the All feed.

There have been a few posts recently on Reddit promoting Piefed:
The tendency for people to get overwhelmed when they are presented with a large number of options, often used interchangeably with the term paradox of choice.
A few people in the other thread assumed that it was required to fork the code to disable those filters. That's not the case, the filters can be configured, and are off by default.
To hide the reputation system, here's a line of CSS that admins can add in the admin area to hide it for every user
Many Lemmy apps actually added Piefed compatibility fairly quickly once it was catching on. Boost, Summit, Blorp, Voyager, Interstellar and Mlem all support Piefed.
Do any of these have the gesture of swipe up/sideways to go back/close picture from full view? I'd like to move away from Eternity, but I use this constantly. The ones implementing gestures or swipes seem to be focused on upvoting actions and so on, but not to go back.
I'm not well versed in all of them. Summit has press-and-hold to maximise a picture from thumbnail and then swipe up to dismiss, which works well enough for me. Also basic swipe to go back and three tier swipe gesture actions on posts/comments (swipe, longer swipe, longest swipe).
I think Mlem does, although I usually swipe down to close an image from view so I’m not sure about up. I definitely swipe sideways to go back, but it’s been a bit hit-or-miss since the new iPadOS uses this in the corners to shrink an application for some reason I can’t fathom.
Summit you can swipe right while in comments to go back. You can swipe left on a comment or post to vote. It's extremely similar to Sync was on Reddit or the Lemmy version.
There's one point you haven't mentioned that, to me, is the most important one and is honestly, I think, the core issue most people are talking around: Piefed defederates actual Socialist instances (Hexbear, Lemmygrad, Lemmy.ml) by default in a blatant bid to suppress left-wing speech.
If some libs want to go off and make their own little safe-space reddit clone because seeing a post sympathetic to China makes them angry, sure, go ahead I guess. But I'm a Socialist, and all serious Socialists - or Liberals who believe in the merits of free discussion and debate, of which there are vanishingly few these days - are going to be opposed to that sort of thing.
I moved to Lemmy because /r/CTH was banned and /r/GenZedong getting quarantined was the final straw. It is clear to me that the goal of the administration of the major PieFed instances is to recreate the same Anticommunist culture of Reddit within the fediverse.

If they choose not to, it's they who are putting their politics ahead of their development goals, much in the same way (if this isn't too melodramatic) Imperialist states suddenly stop caring about free markets and the international rules-based order when it comes to the Cuban embargo, Iranian and Russian influence, or Chinese loans.

It has less to do with your politics and more to do with pretty much everyone collectively deciding they don’t want to deal with your toxic instance culture. You guys create such a massive moderation overhead in instances where you engage that it isn’t worth having you around.
Why not point to both? Now that most of the tech crowd left Reddit after the 2023 API shutdown, the average Redditor isn’t ready to go through a lot of hoops to get to a new platform. See also lawsofux.com/choice-overload/

I going to stop engaging with this stuff now. I'm just so sick of this inane inter-software fighting. Piefed does some nice things, Lemmy does some nice things, both have questionable aspects. That's just software, baby!

Different threadiverse implementations just means different features available to people looking for them, and a bigger, more diverse threadiverse is a better one.

I kept reading and found someone else pointing a lot of those filters are off by default (like decreasing reputation if you reply with a gif, what was even the idea here lol). I'm also not a native speaker, and if I'm talking about a serious subject and write a long text I usually use a chatbot to grammar check me and sometimes that crap changes my hyphens for em dashes and I don't notice - at least it seems like you only get flagged for posting an em dash instead of losing score. I'm still not sure what to think about the reputation score though... Lastly, even though I have blocked hexbear and lemmygrad, I find it lame that'd they'd ban it by default :P
Well most instances do block them even on the lemmyverse. Dbzer0 obviously doesn't. But the default defederation includes a lot more instances than them in the first place. They're just the most notable.
That's quite surprising given by how touchy they are about everything (that ml user comment even says "stupid" is ableism), I thought they would be welcomed all around the fediverse.
With many of those comments being the recent code-level takedown of PieFed. I mean, I'm not saying that this user is a nutomic sock puppet account, but it would be hard to make it more obvious.

I have received word that there are people combing through the PieFed code looking for anything that might be harmful. This is excellent and can only make PieFed better and less harmful.
But my favorite has to win! There's no way the devs would/should be able to learn from each other, and they smell for making a competing product. Monopolies are awesome. /s
'where is the hostility coming from?' sure, the evangelists for it tend to be very polite, however it's because there's been posts like this happening all year that makes it pretty clear why people prefer piefed:
