LFS drops support for System V, citing workload problems and upstream dependencies on systemd

It sucks to hear that a project like LFS is forced to drop System V support. I never was a fan of systemd, so this is a bit dissapointing, albeit understandable.
in reply to PenguinJazz

The distro whose goal is education and customization drops support for the easier to understand and lighter init system out of lack of maintainability in service of accommodating the new stuff big desktop environments are doing.

Welcome to the Year of the Linux Desktop. See you all on FreeBSD in 2027.

in reply to doodoo_wizard

you can always go ahead and maintain sysv and it's support throughout linux software.

Some people don't understand that systemd isn't the only init system, not even just the only init with modern features. We have runit, OpenRC, s6, dinit, each with very levels of features. The reason there is no real competitor to what systemd does is because it is "cheating", and by that I mean systemd isn't just an init system. It has major scope creep, trying to do everything. It isn't even the best at doing what all the other software it replaces (like DNS, time, etc). What it offers that is irresistible to developers is unifications and abstractions which make developing for Linux simpler. This though is the exact opposite of what many people love about Linux: the option to pick and choose.

Linux newbie needs help with solaar

Hello I'm a Linux newbie and I need some help. I'm running fedora on my laptop and I want to connect my Logitech mouse. I got solaar installed but I need to manually install the udev rule. I'm following the Instructions here

So I understand that I need to copy rules.d/42-logitech-unify-permissions.rules from the solaar GitHub and place it in /etc/udev/rules.d the thing I don't know how to do is get there. I'm not super familiar with the terminal

in reply to johnyreeferseed

You're not a dumbass, you've just been taught to use a computer wrong by the bad operating system.

This is a useful lesson for linux newbies in general: when you want to install a program, go to your package manager first, not your web browser.

Yea I just can't believe a completely missed where it said Mac lol. It's pretty obvious in hindsight

Some good news at least. Pattison has pulled out of the sale of their warehouse to ICE.
in reply to TheFeatureCreature

Yeah, I was relieved to see that. I would have boycott Save-On if they did sell to ICE, but it would have sucked as I like some of their Western Family products.
in reply to Coyote

Jimmy Pattison is a billionaire and got there by being a colossal asshole. His loyalties are not with you or me. He’s a net negative for BC. I avoid as many of the Pattison assets as I can, but it’s hard to track all of them. The Buycott app helps me trace ownership.
in reply to TheFeatureCreature

You would think that a reputable journalist would know that... you know, update their articles once new information comes to light?

"Anticommunists" aka people who dare to be critical of Russia and China
in reply to narp

What does that mean? Like not defending AES while claiming to be a small-c communist? Or just shitting on both AES efforts and small-c commies? The latter are liberals at best and dogs of the empire. The former provide slop for half of the struggle sessions I see in leftist spaces.

This is very dumb and confusing.

in reply to narp

There's plenty of Russia and China criticism even on the political comms
in reply to narp

Liberals : Russia :: Republicans : Obama

Can't have a real critical conversation with them because they're too caught up in the fever dreams that were pushed on them from the top down. You're too busy defending reality, which in turn drives them into further madness as they perceive it as ~~a defense~~ a conspiracy to deceive them by a paid robotic shill.

Communists are quite critical of China and Russia, we just base those criticisms in reality instead of wild US imperial propaganda. What you've said is no different from when a right winger says "I was banned for a simple difference of opinion." What's the opinion? What's the "criticism"? Because if it's something absurd and offensive with no basis in fact, of course you're going to get pushback. People whose ideology puts a premium on factual analysis and verification tend not to appreciate it when people whose ideology depends on maintaining a false sense of superiority by creating an ambient haze of vague scandal around all alternatives show up and start slinging bullshit around.

Have to protect white liberals from calling out US Authoritarianism and bad words

Even putting aside my grievances with tankies, this just reads as bad faith bs.

It's likely a bug the OP has identified, nothing deliberate.

Is it possible to sort out news

I know this is a broad question, and dont expect to be able to filter everything. Is there a way to filter out news on Lemmy so I can just scroll saving my mental health at times?
in reply to SpacePanda

Yes, you can block users, communities, or use the subscribed view and don't subscribe to them.

It's a YAAMT!

Coded by a raging cryptofash, of course, LMBO!

I wouldn't trust NATO. They should have been dissolved decades ago
in reply to EmpireInDecay

Right. Putin would love it if NATO didn't exist, because then there would be nothing stopping him from expanding the Russian empire all the way to the Atlantic.
in reply to Archangel1313

What about the entirety of the European army? What about simple reality? Do you think that just because the West is expansive and invasive like cancer that Russia necessarily will be that way? You understand how the war in Ukraine took place and how America couped them, right? That Ukraine is in everything but name (but even in the theatrics you can see it) an American proxy state? Is that why others also fear China, because they associate capacity for murder and power to bloodthirst and amorality since that's all they know?
in reply to YappyMonotheist

Ukraine is an Israel proxy. Might not make sense yet but just wait.
in reply to EmpireInDecay

They don't need 900 military bases around the world to invade their neighbors and steal their land.
in reply to Archangel1313

Whataboutism. I'll take you seriously when I see you as invested in Western imperialism as you are now.
in reply to ghost_laptop

"Whataboutism" is when you try and change the subject. Like, when someone says "Russia likes to invade their neighbors", and the response is, "whatabout the US having 900 bases around the world?"
in reply to Archangel1313

No, what about is keeping quiet while your country does it but then scream "what about the russian savages".
in reply to ghost_laptop

First of all...not "my country".

Second...that's not how this conversation went. We're in a post that is talking about the Russia / Ukraine invasion. Calling it what it is, is not "whataboutism". It is directly addressing the topic at hand.

"Whataboutism", is trying to distract from that, with all the "US bad" misdirections. Yeah. We all know the US is bad. No one is disputing that. But Russia can't just dictate how Ukraine defends itself, especially when Russia is the one attacking them.

If someone was punching you in the face, and told you they'd only stop if you dropped your guard...would you?

in reply to EmpireInDecay

I wonder how many nato politicians are in the Epstein list or something parallel to that.
in reply to jankforlife

We, on the other hand, don't accept Russian troops in a sovereign Ukraine.
And actually don't accept Putin in general.
in reply to Flying_Lynx

Damn, Russia somehow didn't account for that. Guess more war is in order.
in reply to Flying_Lynx

Luckily your opinion doesn't have any effect on reality and your governments are puppet States so nothing will change.
in reply to ghost_laptop

Perhaps not.
But the reality is that Russia sucks at all levels and tries really hard to stay relevant by behaving like raging idiots.
