AI controls is coming to Firefox
Starting with Firefox 148, which rolls out on Feb. 24, you’ll find a new AI controls section within the desktop browser settings. It provides a single place to block current and future generative AI features in Firefox.

Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
Software engineers at Microsoft are now expected to use both Claude Code and GitHub Copilot and give feedback comparing the two, I’m told. Microsoft sells GitHub Copilot as its AI coding tool of choice to its customers, but if these broad internal pilot programs are successful, then it’s possible the company could even eventually sell Claude Code directly to its cloud customers.
Guys? Are we going to have to rename Microsoft products from Copilot to Claude soon?
Microsoft Claude 365?

Microsoft is increasingly adopting Claude Code, despite selling its own GitHub Copilot AI tool. Microsoft’s developers are now testing out both to compare them.Tom Warren (The Verge)

Wiarton Willie predicts early spring, but Punxsutawney Phil disagrees
Wiarton Willie, along with most of his Canadian counterparts, has predicted an early spring after he did not see his shadow on Monday morning on Groundhog Day.
Groundhog Day is a long-held tradition of watching animals coming out of hibernation to predict whether there'll be an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
Every Feb. 2, groundhogs and even a crustacean emerge from their shelters to see if they see their shadows.
Fuck ICE, both the frozen water and the highschool drop outs who cannot be productive members of society.
predict whether there'll be an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
Where I live 6 more weeks of winter is an early spring.
Danish Students Face Legal Action and Fines Over Textbook Piracy
After "awareness" campaigns that failed to move the needle for years, Denmark’s leading anti-piracy group is shifting to a more aggressive litigation strategy. The Rights Alliance confirmed it will begin filing civil lawsuits against individual students who are caught sharing even a single digital textbook. The anti-piracy group prefers not to mention the targeted platforms but says it uses undercover monitoring of private groups to gather evidence.

Just like the Pirate Bay they will try to find and prosecute individuals behind it and then try and force governments to block the domains. Which they did, all of those guys spent trivial prison sentences (this was early internet and in Sweden, circumstances are not the same anymore), and TPB was down for like... A year I think, before it popped right back up and is going just as strong as it ever did. Because just like these capitalist laws to protect the technofeudal class evolve to protect them, so does the methods by which creative hackers employ tech to fuck them in the ass.

According to the article, $150,000 is the maximum damages allowed per track. So $150,000/track * 86,000,000 tracks is around $13 Trillion. So they are asking for the maximum that the law allows.
They could ask for infinity billion dollars for all it matters; you can't get blood from a stone.

So when are you going to sue AI companies?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Anna's archive is not giving you song downloads, but rather metadata
200gb meta, 300tb music. Just 300tb not released yet. Might be, might not.
So when are you going to sue AI companies?
I think some sue suno and settle for money. And GEMA (germany) sue openai for songtext.
Apparently it's legal and acceptable to demand, through a court, enough money to destroy the world economy.
Seriously, if I were the judge I'd throw out the lawsuit until they come up with a remotely realistic number. As it is, it makes the whole lawsuit look like a joke.

Wouldn't it be in the best interests of state sponsored hacking teams to hide or blame other states?
Of course. If I were leading an offencive team at CSIS, I'd do my best to procure machines and credentials in anorher country to launch the campaign from. Ideally a known adversary. That doesn't mean that country isn't executing their own attacks. In fact my charade wouldn't work if I chose a country that has no track record of attacks.
Dude this is notepad++, no one cares, we all know china Russia, employs multiple teams for hacking. But they still get caught and nothing happens, because they all will deny it.
This isn't the chinese Uber team, that plans ahead several months, this is more: oh I found exploit in notepad++, via some tool. It isn't worth the effort, because they are just looking for exploits in the wild.

Kinda sad the flagship instance is the biggest turnoff to wider adoption. Also, I gotta try / switch to Piefed.
Doing an "Orphan Black" re-watch and this scene gets me every time.
Oh, there's an "-ism"
Felix goes to a club and is disappointed to learn there's an "-ism" required to be there.
Piefed is great!
Highly recommended. Now I can donate again without feeling gross about supporting dessalines and nutomic.
Most comments from lemmy.ml range from neutral slightly below average to slightly above, but conversely after someone has blocked Lemmygrad and hexbear, the most batshit insane comments very much tend to come from there. This includes, highly ironically (rotfl), the recent statement that PieFed has a hard-coded block of lemmy.ml, which is laughable!!?!
I do not feel that I am ever missing something by personally blocking Lemmy.ml - and this is based off of months of checking, every time I notice e.g. a different comment count than what I see.
If someone enjoys reading their so-called "content", go ahead and enjoy all you like, but that's not my thing, and I am SO GLAD that I can enact my own personal defederation of it.
You are going to love PieFed, I do believe. Mainly since they are more receptive to feedback and actual code changes than Lemmy is, so your improvements could benefit the entire PieFed userbase regardless of which UI they run. They understand that sometimes no content (of the sort that just pisses people off) is better than highly negative stuff, and e.g. if you block someone then PieFed sides with the person doing the blocking rather than insisting on the rights of the person being blocked to incessantly troll you, able to send you DMs, vote on your content, reply to you, trigger notifications, etc. (some of this refers to "instance blocking", with only a subset but not none of which also applies to "user blocking").
Basically, PieFed places more control into the hands of the individual user, rather than relying upon a single source of authoritarian control (the instance admin, or to a lesser degree the mods).
‘We Don’t Know the Word Surrender’: Cubans Respond to New U.S. Threats

The U.S. military leaders know that Cuba is not Venezuela, that they wouldn’t have the easy victory of January 3rd. We do not know the word surrender, and that is why Trump has set out to recreate the shameful chapter of Weyler’s Reconcentration, ordered by that Spanish general to starve our people into submission, given his inability to defeat the Mambí Army on the battlefield. They cannot forgive us for being considered a moral compass despite all the difficulties, and the spirit of revenge leads them to act with genocidal cruelty. What will humanity do: succumb to fascism or respond with courage and integrity? “Whoever stands with Cuba today, stands for all time.”

The upgrade argument for desktops doesn't stand up anymore
I haven’t thought about it in a while but the premise of the article rings true. Desktops are overall disposable. Gpu generations are only really significant with new cpu generations. CPUs are the same with real performance needed a new chipset and motherboard. At that point you are replacing the whole system.
Is there a platform that challenges that trend?
