One friend who was running hos own mail-server, used to create a new email address specifically named for each new sign-up.
eg. TescoSpam @ domain
Then he could track where all of the emails were being sold, even when they were denying that they were doing this.
He called it Blue-Dye For Digital Plumbers. :D

This does not surprise.
When working at a college in East London, they used spamming techniques to recruit all of the college staff as members.
While some people kept a form o professional portfolio there, the only people who used it regularly were middle-managers and other invertebrates... :D
