Linux Preps For "Slow Workload Hints" With Intel Panther Lake

Five years ago Intel began introducing "workload hints" used for thermal and power purposes with their SoCs and in turn on the software-side being enabled with their INT340X kernel driver on Linux systems. That Intel workload hint coverage was added to the Linux kernel in late 2020 and then a big addition in 2023 with Meteor Lake introducing new workload hint type capabil…

You should have to check your car keys at the bar before you get your first pint. You only get them back if you pass a breathalyser test, like the one the bizzies use. Landlords should be responsible people and not let drunks drive home.

@CppGuy Surely a car can be fitted with a breathalyzer. And also give the driver a quick reaction time and theory test.

@rhelune

I'm not sure how practical the theory test is, but I'd support a breath test for any driver with prior drink–driving convictions. Making it selective would add to the stigma and also avoid unnecessary cost for people who never drink and drive.

A reaction time test is an interesting idea. We struggled for years to get my father to give up his car, so I'm sympathetic to the idea. I guess it might also prevent some kinds of drug–driving.

When I get targeted by a corporate ad on Facebook it tells me which of my friends is dull enough to follow them. I despise them for it.

The original Mozilla “dinosaur” logo artwork

Jamie Zawinski, one of the founders of Netscape and later Mozilla, has dug up the original versions of the iconic Mozilla dinosaur logos, and posted them online in all their glory. While he strongly believes Mozilla owned these logos outright, and that they were released as open source in 1998 or 1999, he can't technically prove that.

Computers should not act like human beings

Mark Weiser has written a really interesting article about just how desirable new computing environments, like VR, "AI" agents, and so on, really are. On the top of "AI" agents, he writes:

Take intelligent agents. The idea, as near as I can tell, is that the ideal computer should be like a human being, only more obedient. Anything so insidiously ap
