Quite some years ago (2006-08), we brought the #OLPC AKA the 100$ laptop to Ethiopia as pilot. A surprising thing happened. The laptops were often without battery power in the morning. A thing that wasn’t anticipated. It had two reasons. One was the keyboard LED (it was removed in later series). It was used by the parents to have a light at home. The other was a bigger surprise. The parents used the mesh networking to discuss market prices for their produce. Fascinating. 1/8

Decentralisation remains an underexplored field in commerce and communication, IMHO. For obvious reasons. Capitalism relies on control and centralisation. Kind of a contradiction, IMHO. A reason why decentralisation and transparency are often touted as goals, but never really implemented. 3/8

(In a flat and open field, the mesh network of an OLPC, that didn’t need the CPU for transmitting network traffic, so still worked when the OLPC was „sleeping“ had a range of up to 4 kilometres) 4/8

Attention Arch users, Pacman 7.0 has just landed in stable Arch's repos. However, if you use local ones, you must manually intervene. Here's how to do it.

I'm watching "The real reason algorithms are bad for art" by Digging the greats and can't remember the last time I asked real humans for recommendations for music. At one point, he is going around asking people of artists/albums that they recommend. I thought that was a cool idea. Then I thought, what if I asked lemmy/mastodon/ect and see what you all recommend?

**Who is your favorite artist and what song/album would you recommend?**

I'm looking to expand my horizons a bit.

May I offer a link to my archive of writing about independent artists? It's not exactly what you were asking for but I think it might help you anyway. 100% human opinions about music, no algorithm involved! Every week I listen to five music submissions and write short (<150 words) descriptions of the music some at helping people figure out if it's something they might be interested in hearing. I focus on the strengths of the music and neutral description.

So it's not so much about my taste as what I'm observing as a musician and critical listener.

I've covered everything from rock bands to classical artists, so you should be able to find something you like. Generally, the first line should tell you enough to decide if it's even worth reading more, so it's super low commitment! Whenever possible I embed the player in the post, too, so you don't even have to click off the page to actually hear the music most of the time.

Weekend reading: Liz Cheney’s vision is incompatible with a fully realized democracy. But there is *some* line she’s not willing to cross to impose it on the country.

A devastating indictment of the Right that this actually distinguishes her.

Some thoughts based on this week’s piece:

Most importantly: All those who want to see America realize the promise of egalitarian, multiracial, pluralistic democracy need to hold the line against any attempt to legitimize positions and ideas held by Cheney and others that are incompatible with that vision. 14/

Liz Cheney’s struggle against Trump sets her apart. It matters. But she should not be allowed to define the boundaries of the “respectable” spectrum of U.S. politics or the contours of American democracy.

What an honor, privilege, and responsibility to be able to vote twice this fall.
