11% originate from flowering plants and 25% of prescription drugs come from plant-derived ingredients. Life-saving drugs like common chemotherapy medicine Paclitaxel originate from yew tree bark, penicillin, & compounds found in fungi
Climate change and biodiversity loss puts a halt on how medicinal innovation develops

You know the old joke "How to tell if person is vegan? Don't worry they will tell you".
I have very few strong or loud opinions around the vegan thigs, but this one I consider really harmful.
I just met the sweetest person I'm dogsitting for and they brought me a box of delicious looking cookies. Sadly not vegan. And as I don't want to be an ass, I'm just keeping it for my non-vegan friends.
Could I just say "no thanks, I'm vegan"? Sure. Does it feel like exactly the the joke? Absolutely. Did I therefore made weird compromise that is (in the long term) worse for everyone? Also yes.
my solution - cause it happened a lot at the beginning: taking it with mentioning that I am vegan just to prevent more useless presents.
I always do this in a friendly way, I always point out that I appreciate the thought behind the gift. But of course I also explain why I do not want them to repeat that.
Btw: I already did this with other presents I didn't need way before vegan because I want people to be happy cause their presents made me happy.
Of course I don't do this with
'random strangers' who only want to be friendly & who I never see again.
But friends, Family, neighbours...
Presents should be made to Show affection. If somebody doesn't like to think about my needs & wants they should not give me presents. I don't want things to relief other peoples guilty conscience

in reply to Jeff Jarvis • • •Consider the (#Conservative) mindset here: Inventing a threat b/c no one is taking your "imagined" threat seriously.
I think we've seen this movie:
A scientist/activist who is concerned people aren't taking some imagined threat seriously ("giant radioactive spiders", "mass shooting in a theme-park", "wildfires", etc) that they CREATE the threat themselves just to get people to realize "the threat is real".
And the resulting death & destruction is therefore justified. 🤔
