For anyone wondering why the Nazis on Twitter, Meta, and the US State are having a meltdown today it's because China dropped about a half dozen brand new AI models that outperform anything ChatGPT/Grok/Claude/Llama can do, take a fraction of the time and money to create and upkeep, and made them all open source, ruining the AI market.

Chinese researchers just built an open-source rival to ChatGPT in 2 months. Silicon Valley is freaked out.
DeepSeek-R1, a new reasoning model made by Chinese researchers, completes tasks with a comparable proficiency to OpenAI's o1 at a fraction of the cost.Ben Turner (Live Science)

China leads the US in 85% of critical, emerging technologies' research
China is beating the US in most strategic technologies research across the defense, space, energy, and biotechnology sectors.Huileng Tan (Business Insider)
Chinese progress is what happens when you have a Government that ‘gets it’. Having wasted a decade of my life trying to get UK politicians to invest in smart home technology (when we still had the opportunity to be world leaders), I’m not in the least surprised to hear that the West is falling behind in 85% of emerging technologies.

Reminder, Linus sometimes rejects #LinuxKernel pull requests[1] – which is why I distrust #Linux news sites that write stories along the lines of "foo will be in #Kernel version bar" based on merge requests without mentioning that risk.
And why do that at all? There are often just a few hours or a day or two between the pull request and Linus merging it, so why not just wait a bit?
1/ And sure, often…

2/ …the problem that leads to Linus rejecting a pull request is often resolved within a few days. But that is not always the case and news sites sometimes (often?) miss that. Which is why I in rare cases noticed lot's of news sites all over the world reporting some feature made it into a new Linux release[1], when in fact it was rejected by Linus for that cycle.
