Well I managed a better shot today, but through luck. I tried the portrait hack, but my phone doesn't want to recognize moss for a portrait. I tried the 0.5 zoom hack, but the moss was too small a part of the scene for the phone to focus on. But enough different shots at different distances and I finally got it.
A clump of moss growing between paving stones, seen from the side, with tall fresh sporophytes bright in the sun. The sporophytes are surprisingly in focus. My phone usually refuses to focus on them.
