Sen. Elizabeth Warren has long complained that corporations bilk consumers using "tricks and traps." Here are companies bilking Americans living in food deserts.

The few times I've gone to a Dollar General in California, where there actually is a law about this, the issue is also present - they will just override it to the shelf price if you ask, but will never correct it.

That is assuming you can wade through the hellbeast of a store to even get anything, the aisles are usually completely blocked and there's only one person working there

A psychologist (and native Dane) shares how Denmark relies on two words to stay grounded: overskud (the energy/space to take something on) and pyt (to let it go).

I ate an old piece of matzah so we could throw away the box. My wife asked if it was stale. What even is stale matzah? Doesn't it pretty much start off stale?

Anyway, it was fine.

in reply to Jeremy Mallin

I've eaten plenty of stale things in my life. All that means is that the moisture levels are not what they ought to be and it doesn't quite taste its best. It doesn't mean it's "bad" in any objective sense (although depending on tastes it might be subjectively bad to some people).

In case you didn't know, you can forward ADB over TCP, in AFV you can reach the host device via vsock, ADB supports communication over vsock, thus you can easily get a shell.

Now, since we can run apps over wayland in the VM, all we have to do is install and run scrcpy to get a lovely/cursed setup were you can mirror your own device into itself.

I was curious about what the definition of bread even is, as in what are the requirements to call it bread. It sounds like the only absolute requirements are some combination of flour and water in some sort of mixture. I thought there would be a more involved definition.

From an "Ask Culinary" post on reddit 13 years ago:

> The type of flour that is used and how they are put together.

> Bread - you typically use a type of flour with high gluten content and mix/knead the dough very thoroughly in order to establish long, tough gluten strands so that your bread is nice and chewy. Also, eggs are typically not required for your basic breads.

> Cake - you typically use a type of flour with low gluten content so that the cake *doesn't* get super chewy. You also use eggs and typically a lot more butter to provide the right sort of mouth feel.

So apparently it's more to do with gluten and fat and therefore texture than with sugar and therefore sweetness. Bread is made from dough, cake is made from batter. And apparently there are less sweet cakes and more sweet breads, too.

okay but that neck stretch is iconic. like, who needs yoga when you can just sprinkle in some joy? let's get the whole pickle gang doing this. pickles > positivity.

Among the many painful subjects broached in the videogame Night in the Woods (#NITW) is the business of #college not being the "real world". The way it's popularly conceived, and the experience that a lot of college graduates still have (especially if they're the lucky ones) is that college life is...sealed off from the world, in a sense. It's a bubble Universe, its own thing. If you're right-wing and you hate #education generally, you might call this atmosphere "elitist".

in reply to Kris Dreemurr (they/them) of the Pnictogen Wing

I myself don't think that this problem is unique to #college. A #corporation easily becomes a sealed-off private Universe, out of joint with broader reality. Many institutions are prone to become insular. But the college experience is designed to be more complete than that. The college becomes Home for you, for a period of years. That's not a small thing.

If you decide that you're going to live for a few years in houses or dormitories maintained by the college or university, you're placing the college leadership in loco parentis, whether or not you're aware of the shift.

~Chara

in reply to Kris Dreemurr (they/them) of the Pnictogen Wing

Now...correct me if I'm wrong here, but increasingly in #technology there's a move towards turning the high-tech startup or entrepreneur's venture into something similarly complete, a microcosm where the workers, I mean the employees, I mean the associates are expected not just to work but to live.

Imagine #SpaceX as your home rather than a dodgy military-industrial firm with a line in cheap rockets for putting up satellites. Imagine thinking that corporation wasn't just where you worked, but the place that contained the totality of your life: where you slept, where you dined, where you entertained yourself, whatever.

~Chara

in reply to Kris Dreemurr (they/them) of the Pnictogen Wing

yeah and like

we know how company towns turn out from last century

the attendant horrors should not be a surprise to anyone, and yet there are people cheering for it

in reply to Irenes (many)

@ireneista indeed! and cheering for this idea not because they have any particular plans or notions, but simply because it's "efficient". why not have the workforce merged into the populace? why not make the job (and the job site) the only reality for the plebes? It's just easier!! ~Chara
in reply to Kris Dreemurr (they/them) of the Pnictogen Wing

That seems to be an ideal, and therefore colleges and universities are now just competition for the attainment of that ideal. From the perspective of the ambitious and grasping parent, respectable #academia had their chance.

These high-status parents want someone to take their kids off their hands, at every stage of their maturation if possible. If "higher education" isn't doing the job right, then it's time to give the wizards of #technology a chance!

Your Cherokee words for today.
The top word is English followed by how it is written in the Cherokee language followed by how it is spelled in English then how to pronounce it phonetically.

The Laurel, in its two varieties, large and small, is much used for spoons and combs, on account of its close grain, as also in medicine, but is never burned, as it is believed that this would bring on cold weather and would furthermore destroy the medicinal virtues of the whole species. The reason given is

in reply to Neugin

that the leaves, when burning, make a hissing sound suggestive of winter winds and falling snow. When the doctor is making up a compound in which any part of the laurel is an ingredient, great precautions are taken to prevent any of the leaves or twigs being swept into the fire, as this would render the doctoration worthless. Sassafras is also considered a medicine and for boiling, drinking the water it was soaked in, but tabued as fuel among the Cherokee, for the practical reason that it will
in reply to Neugin

pop out of the fire when heated and might set the home ablaze.
