Today's protest round up starts in, er ... China!

Yesterday, 3,000 workers at Yilisheng Technology, Guangdong went on strike against attempts by the company to enforce workweek limits as a way to push them to resign without compensation. The company's overtime ban would reduce pay to below minimum wage.

It has been over a month since I had a model making session (with all the home & work projects cutting into my free time ) but today I got some clean-up done and another underside coat on these two #ModelAircraft projects (P-47; B-25)

I’m personally against hackathons. I believe it gives people bad habits of “complete as fast as possible, don’t care about code quality, and plan and code at the same time” mindset. Most hackathons are heavily influenced by cali tech startups’ “ship fast, fix later” mindset.

That’s why I’m doing research instead. It definitely takes longer, but it gives you ability to plan in advance and write good quality of code.

Oh, please don’t misunderstand me. I shouldn’t have generalized all the hackathons.

I love hackathons like FreeBSD’s. But if you come to my university (uWaterloo), you’ll find something very different. I’m scared of future developers around my age because many of them won’t even know how to write good code. LLM-oriented hackathons are ruining the world, and most people around me join them for job opportunity and not for problem solving. This obviously doesn’t help anyone.

no misunderstanding :-) about the FreeBSD hackathons.

The observation about LLM-oriented hackathons is enlightening. Thanks

I spend a bit of time dissecting the #sunpci driver in #ghidra. And I can now boot the SunPCi from my own code! Using the #solaris driver still.

Some terrifying conclusions:

The windowed output in the SunPCi userspace application comes from repeatedly read()ing the /dev/sunpcidrv0 node. That just returns some raw video data and mode information.

Userspace contains a VGA emulator itself. Whenever it doesn't understand something it just switches to the external VGA.

After some more noodling with the #solaris kernel driver, behold the (as far as I am aware) only third-party #sunpci
driver program.

My program currently "emulates" the VGA text mode using #ncurses (poorly) but this makes development a lot faster!

Next up is the block device emulation, then I should be able to boot DOS on this entirely! (without graphics, obviously... But sixels... maybe? 😅 )

Some more progress on the #sunpci client! We now have text mode rendering on par with the original (which also doesn't properly seem to handle 9dot mode)

Pour a drink for the TicWatch. I loved their dual display and insane battery life. Sadly, they could not keep up with the latest WearOS versions.

TicWatch is a strange thing to call it. Makes it sound like it's powered by tics (says the lady with Tourette syndrome).

The biggest risk with AI isn't evil robots — it's how easy it is to trust it blindly. 😶🌫️

From lawyers to judges, even court decisions have had to be withdrawn because no one double-checked the AI's work.

The danger isn't in cheating — it's in how simple cheating has become. 🧠💻

I think Christmas is a great example of how sharing a culture can make it truly special. I can’t imagine if just one country claimed, “Hey, this is our thing”- it wouldn’t feel as warm and welcoming to people from all nations as it does now.
