December Laws / Lores (a folklore fantasy)

I recently stumbled across this almost finished winter folklore themed song I wrote years ago & never released. I listened to it again & liked what I was trying to achieve.

It's a fantasy narrative tale in musical form, with the narrator being a dark winter spirit summoned from the depths, who acts as a krampus/malicious Pied Piper type character. The mood is eerie, maybe at a PG film level or evil childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang level.

Musically it's a 10 minute track, focuses on distinct sections featuring pizzicato strings, harpsichord, minimal electronic sounds, with an overlay of the half sung & half spoken vocals.

I do like it musically & as a track that ticks my interest in supernatural folklore & eerie tales, but if I had the chance to rework it I'd change some of the lyrics.

I wasn't sure where to share it, as it doesn't really fit into any of my current music projects.

So am sharing it here.

I ended up building this track originally from 3 separate pieces of music - the pizzicato strings and vocals; the harpsichord part; the electronic atmosphere - and joined them together using quick joins, fades, or extra synths parts - then I think I added an extra reverb to give it a consistent feel. This was a new way of working for me. But I've got lots of short pieces I'd like to try this with, and build a narrative in a similar way. I'd had the harpsichord part hanging around for ages before using it here - it was inspired by the Huly-Hutchinson theme used in the BBC Box of Delights 1980s TV series.

Dear #ElonMusk it is time for you to go to Mars like you promised.

We report somewhere between rain clouds: we have not had to wake up very early to witness the sunrise lately. This is one of the reasons we are able to appreciate the months surrounding the winter solstice. The heavier clouds on the approach turn the sky dark again.

"But Davinci Resolve is also free & full of AI, I don't hear you complaining about that!" - yeah, but 1. Black Magic makes money on hardware & 2. what we now call AI has been in video editing for decades & they're not trying to add a "push to make a video" button.

Canva has one way of making back what they spent on acquiring & maintaining a graphics suite & that's getting users to pay for it & they *are* offering "push to create" genAI features.

Affinity: Explicitly made as an alternative to Adobe's rent-seeking middleman subscription grift & refusing to jump on the AI bandwaggon - and then bought this year by Canva, who immediately made it "free" ( = precursor to subscription) & added AI...

@futzle - and yes, I did watch the "how can it be free?" video & it's Silicon Valley VC bullshit, delivered by someone who was either duped or is lying.

It's the same bet every "we will grow & profit from knock-on effects of our free offering" digital service provider has made & lost; it's only a matter of time before investors demand faster growth, or the gambit fails, or both.

Happened 100s of times before.

RE: mastodon.social/@thejapantimes…

Disgraceful lack of morals from Germany who should be the first to stand against genocide.

Also @thejapantimes, it's not a "war", it's a carpetbombing of civilians.

New year resolution is to learn to make this. A delicacy around here. We call them kabalagala, but in English they say it is "pancakes" which some people now call "pan" or "paani". They are made from overripe sweet bananas and cassava flour, and I think these ingredients, along with milk and eggs, could make waffles too. If I crack it I'll stop buying wheat.

@wauz I didn't imagine cassava flour would be available in Europe! This is strange news. But here are recipes you can try out!

This one mentions sugar, which I try to avoid.

This one gives the best way to do it the classic way, with only three ingredients, flour, bananas, and oil. Not even water!

We have a lot of immigrants, most of them from outside EU on the asylum way of getting permit. It's not that easy to get jobs, and so those, who can spare some money, open small businesses. I often go shopping in a grocery store run by a family from Pakistan. There are others, most of them Arabs. But all of them offer wide ranges of foreign groceries. There was an African store, too, but they focused on cosmetics. German drug stores don't offer much cosmetics for black skin.
All the Arab, Turkish and Asian shops are pretty good at high quality fruits and veggies, but many German customer prioritize on price. But you can buy a lot things strange to us. Even plantains, yam and others.
