In this Guardian "Long Read", natural-history writer Patrick Barkham travels along the massive construction site for the HS2 high-speed track between London and Birmingham.
The sheer scale of this project is hard to grasp --- I followed Barkham's account on satellite map images, and you can see the track site even when fully zoomed out, a yellow-brown scar cutting through England.
Barkham talks to affected residents, managers, campaigners. We see ruthlessness, we see unimaginable waste, we also see exemplary practices and occasional generosity. A nuanced, thoughtful piece that helps us make the connection between a mega-scale project and its impact on a local level. Very much worth reading.
And good photographs too, by The Guardian's Gill Mead.

Hey y'all, remember my Reviewing Shitty Fediverse Memes video? Well, I've been looking into creating a series out of it, since a lot of people really liked that!
Main issue is, I really can't find much memes here because I don't really know where to find them!
So I will propose this: You send me memes, a lot of them, and I'll build a video out of the best ones, but please, go on and share this post around! boost it the fuck out!
Thanks everybody

While that's not an unreasonable tradeoff in some cases, you really can't complain if that comes back to bite you though.

The article quotes top-level figures of the cost explosion, but for me its value lies in capturing how such waste is realised at the local level. Barkham gives several specific examples of missed opportunities for cheaper solutions. He also highlights the painful misalignments that come from locally implementing engineering solutions that were designed to fit into an overall plan that no longer exists, due to down-scaling at the macro-level.
