Valve Has the Secret to Playing Your Games Everywhere, and It’s Not Streaming

A person sits with a game controller, immersed in a virtual gaming interface showcasing various video game titles outdoors.
“Last month, Valve showed off the Steam Machine, a console-like box with PC guts, along with a Steam Frame VR headset. The secret sauce of the headset is down to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU, a mobile-focused chip based on ARM microarchitecture. Valve claims the Frame will be able to play your Steam games, both over local streaming and through an open-source x86 emulator called Fex. When you put on a Steam Frame, it will be running SteamOS, same as the Steam Machine. It’s basically a Steam Deck for your face, but it’s much more distinct than that because of the underlying hardware.”

So, this could be a bit like what the Proton compatibility layer has done for Windows games on Linux (and that has been huge, with more than 24,300 games rated as at least playable with Proton).

Let's say I want to design a little hardware thing, with a PCB, a few parts, and a firmware.
I want people to be able to use it, fabricate it, sell assembled or kit versions, and improve it.
I don't want people to be able to grab the existing, improve on it and not release the changes.

One of the web apps at work as a document management system, Greenlight Guru (GG), has functionality built into it to compare two versions of a PDF and highlight the changes.
In the current version of GG, in the current version of Firefox for macOS, this functionality doesn't work. When you try to use it, not only does the tab it's running in hang, but the entire browser gets wedged and you have to quit and restart the browser.
Works fine in Chrome, of course.

For over a year I’ve been gathering documents from the #Washington state department of #archaeology and historic preservation, trying to make sense of how their permitting system works. Trying to understand why it’s so hard for #Indigenous people to protect their heritage from development, even when the state archaeologist is trying to help. This is what I’ve found. 🔍

I'm not too sure that there is complete honesty in advertising here: over one hundred and thirty years of experience in digital work?

It looks like Barmer Ersatzkasse, a health insurnace company going back to around 1880. So 130 years experience in their business, with the option to "do everything important digitally".

Yes, it is Barmer; you can see the web address on the left window. But even health insurance hasn't done digital record keeping for 130 years....

Tricolored Heron and Its Reflection by Debra Martz
It was early morning, and not even a slight breeze was in the air, which made for some perfectly mirrored reflections of the birds. This Heron was moving very slowly as it went in search of prey.

Photographed from a boardwalk in Port Aransas, Texas.
