One of the reasons Toronto has problems with its transit is the very poor quality of its discourse. In this post, I try to answer the simple question: What is an LRT?

open.substack.com/pub/nextmetr…

in reply to Reece Martin

I became a citizen activist for Hamilton LRT back in 2007. If we said "tram" or "streetcar" the conversation ended immediately. People had an image and they didn't like it. We went with LRT because no one knew what it meant so we could define it.
in reply to Simon Woodside

specifically, “streetcar” at that time meant an aging Toronto streetcar stuck in traffic, and tram meant something for kids that you’d find at Disneyland. Fighting those images was too much of an uphill battle.
in reply to Simon Woodside

@simonwoodside yeah but I think the deal with the devil had unintended but predictable consequences. And honestly, it will end up operating pretty much like a streetcar, unless a miracle happens
in reply to Reece Martin

I tried hard to read it but I am not sure how easy to follow it is.

Dear Gnomers. Can anyone explain to me why switching workspaces with your mouse is done with Super + scroll wheel, while switching workspaces with your keyboard is done with Ctrl + Alt + arrows?

It seems to me that the best thing would be to have one set of base key(s) to manipulate workspaces, another to manipulate windows, etc?

@nyx_lyb3ra Ah, yes, you're right! In general I think we use up too many of the very limited possible/free keyboard shortcuts for switching between workspaces.
in reply to Børge

Super+Page Up/Page Down also switch workspaces, which to me feels more consistent. I imagine the alternative is provided for newer users, as they are more likely to know what Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right means than whatever a "Super Key" is.

@Codeberg

I am happy to pay for it, but —

Is there a way I can have more than 100 repos on Codeberg?

You ban gender affirming care, people will just get it from an online source. It's the same policy result as the failed war on drugs.

Sign the letter: The BBC must not pay Trump a penny

Donald #Trump is suing the #BBC for a reported $10 billion. This is his latest attack on media freedom.

However, he is suing in a Florida court so even if he wins the case, the UK-based BBC could ignore it.

Fellow elsewhere observed fash have an end times vibe going on.

Yup. And they're not wrong. They have a choice between California and Russia. Not much in the middle. They're opting for Russia, because they're white and racist, and they'd rather die than live in a world where other white racists are not in charge.

But there is no happy ending for them, no matter what. Might be for us. But for them, defeat at our hands, or bootlicking early death and poverty at the hands of the oligarchs.
