Lately I’ve been living in low-speed-data world because the solar setup has been down so I ration the backup battery and thus the wifi—and run out of my phone’s high-speed data for the month pretty quickly. This has been a great exercise in priorities, as well as educational.
One of the most surprising things is that my simple-HTML handbuilt site on Neocities, even with lots of pictures, loads right up, photos and all! It begs the question: what the hell is going on with almost every other website (and websitey app)? (That’s rhetorical: I pretty much know the hell.) Fortunately Mastodon is one of the good ones, although of course I haven’t been seeing many pics or videos and my appreciation for good alt text, already high, has gone up even more. Anyway, triple hooray for the small web!
