fascism is growing stronger and stronger and has been becoming more and more dangerous, because the left (social democrats, communists, etc.) is failing and providing no solutions (for the many poor) to the complex problems of capitalism

Didier Eribon: In my parents’ family, people voted for the Communist Party. It wasn’t just a vote every four years, but an entire culture. My parents, as simple factory workers, didn’t read Karl Marx, but there was a theoretical framework: there are social classes that are in conflict with each other, a class struggle, and so on. This led to a kind of proud self-perception that formed their political identity. Then the Communist Party fell apart. And suddenly the Social Democrats said there is no social determinism, no social fate—only self-responsible individuals. Which means that if you don’t make it, it’s your own fault. But by denying the idea of a class society, the Socialists didn’t make these people disappear. Suddenly they felt that only the Front National, which speaks for the common man, for threatened France, hears us.
