EPSTEIN: No.

MUSK: Ale następnym razem na pewno?

EPSTEIN: Nie, no wiadomo. Musowo. Mur beton.

MUSK: Git.

(Elon Musk wychodzi.)

EPSTEIN (do ludzi w szafie): Okej, poszedł, otwierajcie tego szampana.

"The phenomenology of agentic coding" neonvagabond.xyz/articles/the-…

An incredibly dense but rewarding read that makes me wish I had taken more undergraduate philosophy courses. It's amazing to me that people still write like this on the internet.

in reply to Nolan Lawson

Meta note: I feel like more writing on the internet used to be like this: unflinching, uncompromising, daring to challenge the reader. @slightlyoff still writes this way, but he's one of the few. When did we start dumbing things down for clicks, likes, and boosts?
in reply to Nolan Lawson

@slightlyoff While I don't think that a lot of people write they way they do to "dumb things down" (I know my own writing isn't that dense, perhaps because I tend to write like I talk), @chenoehart is a pretty awesome deep online thinker
in reply to Nolan Lawson

In defense of simpler language, I'm often (as in multiple times a week of late) told that I'm hurting my own arguments with inaccessible language.
in reply to Alex Russell

To be clear: I don't think your writing is anywhere near as dense as the article above. But I for one appreciate your writing style; sometimes good writing demands a bit of extra effort on the part of the reader, and doing the "Simple English Wikipedia" thing does it a disservice.

@slightlyoff I'd second that; I don't find your writing style inaccessible. If this does not allay your concern from said other feedback, I relay the advice as given to me by my former chair: write more directly in an active voice, and simplification of the language (and often the argument) will follow. That advice I've found to have saved me much grief the last couple years of writing.
in reply to Nolan Lawson

Just reading the piece now, and it pokes at something I've been heavily fixated on since I went to React Summit this past summer [1]: almost every self-reported productivity aid in software is indistinguishable from "normal" industrial learning rates.

That is, if you take similarly situated engineers, with similar experience, and hand them an opportunity to green-field on *any* new stack, you'd see the same self-reported "win".

in reply to Alex Russell

@slightlyoff Yep fair. People rewrite from Angular to React and then claim they're more productive in React, it's faster, etc. Unfortunately our industry operates mostly on feels
in reply to Nolan Lawson

@slightlyoff you mean vibes 😛

seriously strong agree. I example saw the Dora report this year says people feel one way productivity wise for the example with AI but actually how they feel doesn’t follow.

Spoiler but I think we engineers are irrational emotional creatures just like everyone else but sadly we don’t think we are that way. That’s our fatal flaw.

in reply to Alex Russell

@slightlyoff I regularly celebrate your writing as some of the best on, and not just about, the Web

Yet, its far more allusive than you seem to speak. That doesnt read as an affectation, but it does mean that many smart, educated readers struggle because they dont share the same background knowledge - let alone those who truly need to hear it.

Please dont make it dumber, shorter, or less biting

Chomsky comes to mind as someone whose plain speech and prose never undermined insight or polemic

@_thegeoff Mega-asides would be a good description for what I do when teaching... I'm easily distracted by interesting "asides".

And now I've down the same with this discussion... sorry!

Enterprise Vandalized: No cars for ICE
In the early morning hours of Tuesday, Jan 27, we crept into the Enterprise Rental lot on on Sandy Blvd. and 28th and disabled every car, truck, and van parked there. A large message reading "ICE RENTS HERE" was sprayed across the building to make our motive clear to any passerbys. Awls made quick work of the tires and each vehicle also received a complementary paint job.
