Man is not the only animal who spoils its own environment. But it is one of the very few who ever cleans up afterwards.

Someone I had introduced to my relative when I was caregiving that I had hoped could help after we left is helping for the first time Monday, and it's SUCH a relief that this is working out.

It's a relatively small thing they're helping with, but it feels huge to me.

Stara Zagora Hosts Epic Bulgarian Culinary Forum: A New Era For Bulgarian Cuisine Begins! byteseu.com/1762979/ #AlternativeTourism #Bulgaria #BulgariaTravelNews #BulgarianCuisine #Chef’sSecrets #Europe #EuropeanTravelNews #NationalCulinaryForum #StaraZagora

Had my exit interview with the new (started 4 days ago) CTO yesterday. Things that stood out:

1. He was surprised to learn that lines of test code should outnumber lines of actual code.
2. He suggested that if he defines a spec and gives that to a code generator, then it would be useless to have the same code generator generate all these unit tests.
3. He couldn’t understand why the number of tests would explode if he intended to thoroughly test the application at the highest level only, ie the output of his code generator.
4. Concepts he looked up during our chat: Testing Pyramid, DDD, Clean Architecture.
5. He studiously avoided saying AI, talking only about a mythical code generator that would unerringly translate his presumably complete spec to code.

Anyway, is it time yet to start a consultancy to help companies fix the problems caused by the parrot?

thing i believe: the only fix will be to delete it all and start over

thing i fear: we will not delete it all and start over, because by the time this is all done we'll realize that more than 90% of software written since 2001 was Investor Storytime, did not need to be written at all, and the economically efficient thing to do will not be "fix it" or "rewrite it, but by a human" but rather just "shut it down, it's not serving any purpose"

i remember when snapchat was a big thing for 10 minutes and there were suddenly like 20 different camera apps with filters. did we need this? ever? most of those startups probably ended in aqui-hires. there's so many programs i used and loved that were given away free and made no money, made no capitalist sense except in the weird bubble of silicon valley VC. what happens if "the market" realizes that this was all a waste of time
in reply to mcc

what if AI *is* "the market" realizing this was all a waste of time. what if software companies never existed except as an emotional satisfaction mechanism for execs who had a vague idea and got to watch someone make a proof-of-concept demo of it before the company shuts down. what if "AI" can't make software but it CAN make proof-of-concept demos and it can satisfy execs' emotions— *the only purpose of a tech company*— without having to "hire humans" or "release a working product"

this one stood out to me as a rare and particularly clueful point among the others; is it by any chance missing a negation somewhere?

I’ve found environmentalism isn’t popular with many Boomers unless it gives them good social value; a round of applause for recycling or for purchasing themselves the latest state-of-the-art electric car. They were born amid one of the largest eras of value-by-resource-extraction, and they’re just not wired to understand scarcity.

A History of Birds by Simon Wills, 2017

Even the most well-informed wildlife enthusiast will be entertained by the stories and fascinating facts in the beautifully illustrated book. Our ancestors hunted, tamed, worshipped and depicted birds, and even bestowed magical properties upon them. Why did ancient writers consider the sparrow a lustful creature? Which bird was killed and hung up to predict the weather? And what was an 'arse-foot'?

We had a great time a our first in-person event today! It was awesome to meet likeminded folks, talk about the tech we use, and think about how we can advocate for a better future.

Be on the lookout for the next meetup we host!
