Novel writing update. I'm 42,000 words in and writing the mid-story heist. Still having fun doing it.

I have my Linux laptop setup with a KVM, so I can use my regular desk setup which is much more ergo friendly than a laptop, but still nice to be able to work while out and about. I'm loving Debian 12. Maybe once I get everything dialed in, I'll post about it on my site for posterity (i.e. so I can set things up again when I inevitably distro hop).

Deutschland hatte so dermaßen Glück. Wenn das 200-300km weiter westlich runter kommt, haben wir das zweite Ahrtal. #Kachelmann spricht für #Österreich gerade davon, dass dort nur die tiefe Schneefallgrenze davor gerettet hat, dass es ein 1.000 - 2.000 Jähriges #Hochwasser gibt.

My kid is looking to move on from D&D to something more narrative with their friends. I suggested they look into Fate and a Powered by the Apocalypse variant as options. They want to stick with a fantasy campaign they have going, but want more story telling and less stat tracking.

Are there other good #TTRPG options to investigate?

(1/2) I'm skeptical of this paper that made the rounds last week: Frank “The Economic Impacts of Ecosystem Disruptions” Science doi.org/10.1126/science.adg034… which claims a (causal???) increase of 8.1% in "internal" (non-accident/homicide) infant mortality after the emergence of whitenose syndrome in the eastern US (WNS → fewer bats → more insect pests → more pesticide [the main thrust of the paper] → higher infant mortality. An econometric analysis (using WNS as a natural experiment of sorts)

Yeah, keeping a long list like this up-to-date manually would be quite a lot of work.

It's too bad Mastodon doesn't let you create public, opt-in lists, that would definitely help.

Not that I'd argue why this should exist, I do get it. Maybe there's an opportunity for a good, privacy and safety-focused third party app where you could invite people to lists that can be shared and update dynamically based on activity.

The findings, published in the journal Nature, suggest that humans have been using art to tell stories for much longer than previously believed. The artwork was found in the limestone cave of Leang Karampuang in the Maros-Pangkep region of South Sulawesi. Initially dated at 43,900 years old, new research using a novel laser ablation uranium-series (LA-U-series) dating technique has revealed that the painting is at least 51,200 years old. This makes it the oldest known narrative art in the world...
