It says something about the state of politics & (so-called) political leaders that when I heard there had been a second (potential/possible) attempt on Donald Trump's life.... I immediately thought - 'set-up; he's trying to gain ground back lost after the Presidential debate'...

I have no evidence or reason (really) to suspect this, but Trump has so corrupted politics that it no longer seems implausible....

I'm saddened that that is where my mind went....

Trump campaign says the former president is safe following gunshots nearby.
in reply to Steve Herman

“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!” Trump says in a fundraiser email. “Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.”
in reply to Steve Herman

FBI says the incident "appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump."

‘Initial reports suggested two people were firing at each other. However, sources said investigators now believe the Secret Service agent was the only shooter.’

I don't believe a word of it, do you? It's Florida. Permitless carry and open carry are legal. He's just tryna keep his name in the papers.

That anyone could be in the ‘vicinity’ of a shooter in the US seems entirely possible to a Brit like me. How close is the ‘vicinity’?

But the fact that it was his campaign manager reporting this first rather than the police or secret service perhaps says something too.

"On average, a single deep learning-based paper generates 3,297 kilograms of CO2 equivalents" arxiv.org/pdf/2408.08203
In 2023, there were ~16k #deeplearning #recsys papers published according to Google Scholar .

3.3 tonnes x 16k = 52.8 tonnes of CO2.

Meaning that: #recsys research emits roughly the same amount of CO2 annually as the British Virgin Islands. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…

Comparison of 1934 with 2024 is eerie, Trump and MAGA association with Hitler and Nazis is much too closely matched.

The standard wisdom is that academic careers, especially early, are harmed when academics don't jet around the world for in-person meetings. This article suggests that the importance of this travel is overstated, while the carbon cost is clear.

I am at the #JaneGoodallFoundation climate summit in St. Petersburg, FL, U.S.A., with another 10-15 thousand people this evening. My children are up in front of the stage because Dr. Goodall likes to speak directly to them. I hope they recognize the gravity of being able to hear her speak live, even if they don't yet understand the gravity of the situation they face in their future.

It is nice, but the person who spoke before Dr. Goodall claimed gloriously that he has planted over 2 million trees in the desert, transforming it to forest. It drew loud applause from this group of concerned individuals.

Maybe it is good. We are already geoengineering with our consumption of fossil fuels and production of CO2. We will have to geoengineer our way out of this if we ever care enough. But at the same time, the costs of this (destruction of a desert ecosystem). It is a microcosm of the tough decisions we face, and how little the public understands about the difficulty of those choices. There is no magic solution.
