"In sum, when one party lives in a hermetic information bubble cut off from reality and becomes consumed with weird conspiracies; when the media does a poor job of conveying the depths of one candidate’s depravity; when an incumbent president is excessively shielded from scrutiny; and when his replacement candidate suffers from biased, unfair and simply inaccurate coverage, a debate matters a whole lot.

In that sense, the debates this year should prompt some reflection about the oversights and missteps that allowed us to get this far without a full and accurate understanding of the candidates, not once but twice. We need a political environment that produces an informed electorate, even without an 11th-hour debate."
