I want you to look at the two graphs below.

The first one shows global temperatures in every August as recorded from 1850 through 2024.

The second graph shows temperature anomalies over the past 1000 years, which means amount of deviation from average, in this case taking 1951 to 1980 as a baseline.

There is no way – simply no way — that anyone taking an honest look at this can deny that global warming is an emergency.

But that's what capitalists will say. And that's what apologists for capitalism will tell you.

There's no reason for alarm, they assure us, no need to panic. Just stay calm, and trust that our leaders have the situation under control.

Do you agree with that?

Hell no, I do NOT agree with those schittmonkeys! They're going to roast and drown with the rest of us if we don't take emergency actions NOW, and maybe even if we do.
in reply to Bread and Circuses

Oh, that's OLD data. You can't trust OLD data; what did those people know of 500 years ago? How do we know the data is good.

We will start a committee to get NEW data, that's the way to address this supposed issue.

(That's sarcasm, folks.)

New post: "The continuing tragedy of emoji on the web" nolanlawson.com/2024/09/17/the…

In which I continue to lament the fact that you can't put a smiley face on a web page and be confident it will render properly across browsers and devices.

@StrangeNoises Aha, it looks like Mozilla does not ship their Twemoji font at all on Mac. I guess they only do it on Windows/Linux.
in reply to Nolan Lawson

To quote the Unicode consortium: "Unicode does not specify the appearance of flag emoji. It is the responsibility of font designers to update their fonts as politics change. "

GenZ voters want effective action on the Climate Crisis, a Free Palestine, Trans rights, and affordable housing. Which candidate is offering those things?

We often read that #SciFi predicts the future.

The reality is: This is more often false than true.

There are exceptions, of course: “The Space Merchants” (1952) by Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth is, despite its humorous tone, almost too painful to read in its accurate description of capitalism’s present and likely future.

A lesser known example is Murray Leinster’s short story “A Logic Named Joe” from 1946.
