It's pretty crazy Valve can give a game a Steam Deck Playable rating, give it a special banner on the Steam page to note it's a most-played game on Steam Deck....and then the developer can just add anti-cheat, not enable it and tell people it was never officially supported huh?

in reply to Leandro (Cerberus1746)

@cerberus1746 yeah, Valve really need to have an opinion on this. It's a top 10 game on their console platform. They can't be laissez faire on this. They care about their customers in other ways, so this is the same. It really undermines the Steam support levels.
in reply to Bakunin Boys

@bakuninboys @cerberus1746 I have contacted Valve, waiting on a reply, and I will be doing a further article to discuss the situation but have to wait on Valve for a reply (or no reply) and see how long it takes them to update the Steam Deck rating too

Honestly, this is why I use GOG to buy my games whenever possible.

As long as I have the offline installer backed up, I know my game will continue to work as expected.

It won't solve it directly, but if win32 games are forced to abandon proprietary kernel anti-cheat in place of some kind of standardized Windows API, then potentially that API could be implemented on Linux/Wine.

A lot of other things need to fall in place for that to happen, though. I've been wondering what Valve were going to do about this for a while, I've speculated that maybe SteamOS could ship with a signed kernel, secure boot, remote attestation and run games in secure VMs?

@seyon I'll just point again, to the article of mine i linked you to, everyone is wrong on this, developers don't need kernel-level to block Linux, it means nothing for us

Yay, the connected device in your pocket is now a bomb that can be detonated remotely.

It's not clear what exploded, but causing a lithium battery to short circuit seems plausible.

Can anyone confirm, I'm not going to test this theory myself?

If so, I'm kinda glad #Israel has exposed this, if not the manner used.

Tesla Autopilot and other assists increase distracted driving, study finds

As drivers become familiar with the systems, they exploit them.

arstechnica.com/cars/2024/09/tโ€ฆ

in reply to Ars Technica

Thats the whole point of autopilot. Why else would one use such a system? You want to know what is higher stress than driving, having to monitor someone/something else driving whose abilities are questionable. As soon as it โ€œseemsโ€™ like it can drive most humans hand over responsibility so they can do other things. Thats why we want an autopilot (that actually works). Iโ€™d rather drive than play the watch intently for the eventual autopilot screw-up.

No shit.
Anyone riding a motorcycle or bicycle already knows this.

The draft2digital author AI survey is flooded, but I read the first few paragraphs before being booted.

D2D will not be offering AI licensing at this time, for the reasons so many authors have expressed -- AI firms earning our mistrust with continuous copyright violations, environmental damage, etc. They will not offer such licensing until those reasons are addressed.

This was captured with a DSLR and a 400mm lens, which contributed to the compressed perspective. The conductor boarding the leftmost train is essential to the composition, I think.

Ewing, NJ ("West Trenton") is the last stop on SEPTA's commuter trains from Philadelphia on the former Reading Railroad's line to northern NJ. CSX freight trains still use the tracks north of the station, beyond the end of the overhead electrified wiring used for passenger service.

Matt Blaze reshared this.

in reply to Matt Blaze

Very long lenses like the 400mm, with their narrow field of view, are essential for some compositions (such as this one), but I find I only rarely actually use them. In fact, the longest lens I have for my main medium format camera system is 180mm (which yields the 35mm equivalent view of about a 120mm), and I hardly ever use even that for the most of the photography I do.

For wildlife photographers, on the other hand, 400mm is practically a wide angle.

Matt Blaze reshared this.

in reply to Matt Blaze

One of the challenges of very long lenses is that they tempt you to compose images of subjects that are very far away. But the farther away something is, the more the atmosphere can distort the image. The effects of heat distortion, pollution, humidity, and weather are amplified across longer distances, no matter how sharp the lens is or how high resolution the sensor.
in reply to Matt Blaze

heavier, longer lenses also bring tripod quality into play. I have seen an $8k camera on a $45 tripod, next to a person quite frustrated with the image quality it gave them, blaming the camera.
in reply to Matt Blaze

My astronomer friends might disagree that atmospheric effects are greater the further the astronomical subject.

But aside from my poor (very poor) joke, has anyone doing terrestrial photography adopted the technique used by astronomers of using a laser beam to do real time measure of atmospheric conditions and use that either in real-time lens/mirror adaption or post processing?

in reply to Matt Blaze

The conductor is a very nice element, but imho it would have been a great shot even without: the geometry of the straight lines is striking, especially in b&w.
