60% of the world's population has already lost access to the night sky thanks to light pollution, and it's more like 80% for Europe and the US. Researchers are working to track the growth of light pollution and have developed an inexpensive sensor made from "off-the-shelf" parts. People around the world can install these sensors and share their data, tracking the increase of light pollution from year to year. If you've got technical skills, this could be a fun project.

Lebanon filed a new complaint with the UN Security Council against Israel on Tuesday over a deadly airstrike that killed four firefighters.

An Israeli drone strike targeted a civil defense fire truck in the town of Froun in southern Lebanon on Sept. 7, leaving four firefighters dead.

The complaint was submitted by Lebanon's mission to the UN upon instructions from caretaker Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib.

Israeli forces have killed 1,151 Palestinians working in Gaza’s health sector during its onslaught on the enclave, the Palestinian health ministry said on Tuesday.

A total of 986 were named in a new report published by the ministry, while personal data for the remaining 165 was still being verified.

The delay in the verification process was due to Israeli authorities withholding the victims' bodies or their remains being buried under rubble.

From the WTAF dept: 3 killed, > 1,000 wounded in Beirut by exploding pagers:

"BEIRUT, Sept 17 (Reuters) - At least three people were killed and more than 1,000 others including Hezbollah fighters, medics and Iran's envoy to Beirut were wounded on Tuesday when the pagers they use to communicate exploded across Lebanon, security sources told Reuters.

A Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the detonation of the pagers was the "biggest security breach" the group had been subjected to in nearly a year of conflict with Israel."

Electronic pager devices also exploded in Syria, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency and to Saberin News, an outlet affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards. Saberin reported that seven people were killed in Syria from the blast targeting their devices in the Seyedah Zeinab neighborhood, a Shia stronghold in Damascus.

NYT reports: Residents in Lebanon are scared to answer calls. One resident, Khadijeh Fouani, was preparing winter food supplies when she answered her phone by crying out, "Please hang up, hang up!"

Yeah, no $H!+! Completely sane reaction.

This is an amazing story. I mean parts will be familiar to a lot of people (dramatically when there is a wildfire but other times too) but the part about spending much more than $100 in order to make sure that an undeserving person doesn't get a $100 air filter is..... Well just let me say I'm glad to see at least someone is trying to act in a more streamlined fashion.

A mere rounding error for #ElonMusk, if that
