The counties Biden won in 2020 account for 70% of the GDP of the US. The counties that went for Trump are the biggest drain on the economy and tout themselves as rugged individualists while practicing socialism.

A hulking steel plant in Middletown, OH, is the city’s economic heartbeat as well as a keystone origin story of JD Vance
Its future, however, may hinge on $500M in funding from landmark climate legislation that Vance has called a “scam” & is a Trump target

My favourite new word is holobiont (I know, there are lots of biologists here who already know this - I'm a physicist, I'm late to the game)

I learned this word from David Asher's new book "Milk into Cheese" (which is my new food bible), talking about cheesemaking in many different cultures around the world, using natural fermentation, which often makes use of holobionts like kefir. I use kefir for all my cheese starter, thanks to milktrekker.substack.com/ for giving me the grains!

People putting up candidate signs have First Amendment rights and this sheriff is intimidating the people he’s supposed to be keeping safe. I hope he gets removed from office ASAP.

You can also donate a few bucks to his opponent Jon Barber here. Seems like a good guy and made me feel like there was something I could do, spare some change for the cause of decency and free speech:

The public’s right to know belongs to the public. The government can’t settle it away.

Reduce the costs of firing bad cops by not hiring bad cops, not by agreeing to sweep misconduct under the rug.

1/ CW: Federal Indian Boarding "Schools" 🧵

On this day in 1884 the united states Indian industrial training school opened. It's better known as Haskell Institute, the name under which it operated as a Native reeducation camp. Today it's Haskell Indian Nations University.

It was Haskell Institute that our grandfather Wilson Herrod was forced to attend after leaving Euchee boarding "school". It was Haskell Institute that "trained" him not to speak his Mvskoke language,

2/ a language in which he was fluent, a language most never heard pass his lips.

It was Haskell Institute that was so horrible for him that our grandfather dropped out to enlist in the Navy during WWII. What must he have gone through to choose to be a Navy medic embedded with the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines at Iwo Jima rather than stay and graduate?

3/ The Mvskoke Nation has declared September Indian Boarding School Survivors Month. It says something that we never refer to our relatives who were stolen from us as graduates, but as survivors.
