#Shellprogramming skills are pretty portable between #Linux, #BSD, and #macOS, but some of the underpinnings of macOS are non-standard. It helps to remind yourself that macOS is not a standard #BSD #Unix variant; Apple's #Darwin based systems do a lot of embrace-and-extend under the hood. Here's a practical example that comes up often in the enterprise.

Most #Linux systems export the current user's login name to the LOGNAME environment variable (often via sourcing /etc/profile) and may also export the user's default shell from the user's #GECOS record in /etc/passwd to the preferred shell (set by an application or the user) as the SHELL environment variable. The canonical way to get access to the user's default shell on most Unix-like systems is by parsing /etc/password or another NSS database with the getent utility, e.g. getent passwd "$LOGNAME" | cut -d: -f7.

There are other means to do this on Linux too, but macOS doesn't provide this common #POSIX compatible userspace utility. Instead, Darwin relies on opendirectory(8) for storing and accessing GECOS records, requiring other tools to retrieve the information. You can query a user's GECOS record on Darwin like so:

In containers, especially with non-standard shells, or with centralized #IAM using #LDAP or #ActiveDirectory, you may have to match the local #userID to a remote #LDIF record to before grepping for the data you need. In addition, nsswitch.conf, PAM modules, NIS+, or other less-common data sources may need to be consulted and each will generally have specific utilities for looking up the stored or cached information that is equivalent to what's normally provided in the 7th GECOS field for each user on standard Linux and Unix systems.

As always, your mileage may vary based on use case or implementation details. On the plus side, problems are rarely insoluble when you know where to dig for a solution!

I know... I'm early! Somehow my ADHD sometimes believes that my body should be recovered enough with about 6 hours of sleep... I can tell you... It's not. But when the brain is wide awake... It's no good to stay in bed any longer... 😔

I did the scale thing and I've gained some weight and lost some muscle, so I got back to "slightly obese" again. 😢 I know it's "just" a number... And I also know that I will work on it again when my health allows. But it is always hard when your hard work slowly fades because your pain levels aren't allowing you the usual exercise (and they make you feel bläh, which my eating disorder wants to "heal" with food... 😔). It's not too bad yet, I had expected it to be worse... But hey that can still happen! 😂 (positive thinking gone wrong here... 🤔).

I'm a bit early in the gym, so I'm taking some time to check the social media thing, hoping some folks will slowly buzz off as I do so... 😇 It's not busy at all, compared to the "big hours" where they usually stand in line to get to the machines (although I don't know how busy it is here during the more popular hours, but seeing the amount of lockers, I'm assuming there's way more folks here then...).

I'm feeling a bit less bläh now. I hope that will remain, or get even more of the less 😇 haha. Arwen and I have a walkies date with our friend and their dog. We'll go to the Herperduin, which will hopefully make Arwen very happy! But... She's not allowed to swim yet! So when we get close to the water, I'll have to leash her. She may not like that, especially as the weather is still good enough for swims... But I don't wanna cause any issues but letting her swim before the checkup. Which is this afternoon... 😊 Fingers crossed 🤞🏻.

I still wanna do some chores in the house. I did check out a big box yesterday, and the rest of the contents can go upstairs. So I may do that before walkies, so the living room may be a little less messy again. Because the house gets "dusty" more than the apartment did, I will try to clean some before walkies as well. I had wanted to do so yesterday, but I was just too down to care... 😔 My home will bever be spotless, I'm just not a good cleaner. But... I will do my best to have it "clean enough" to live properly in. 😊

Yesterday I put together my spice rack, which was challenging as it was silly images with something like Chinese texts 😂. I think I did it right... It looks a bit smaller than on the image, but I hope I can sort my things on it once it hangs. It should be better than having it all "messy" on the counter... But it needs to be drilled to hang, and I never made holes though tiles. So I've asked dad... If he can help somewhere next week. I'm hoping to have the long curtains then for the living room. And I still have the roller one for the bedroom... So maybe we can hang the two curtain things and the rack somewhere next week... 🤞🏻 🍀
