Finally some good news

"Changing #Linux code could cut data center energy use by 30%, researchers claim"

datacenterdynamics.com/en/news…

I don't know how realistic this is @kernellogger but could be a small step into the right direction.

I hope, it's not wasted for #AI or other bullshit

2/ …afaics no easy answer for this case, so it needs a closer inspection by someone with the right skill set.

Maybe those developers just missed that.

*But maybe* all those companies and many other professionals Linux network admins use or configure their machines differently – and by doing so knowingly or accidentally avoid the codepath/scenario that these changes improve.

Often it's something like the latter.

3/ BTW, as former writer and editor this article shows a big problem of modern media:

It mentions some of the the companies I mentioned in a quote – but the site just published the quote with a claim, without reaching out to them asking if those claim is true (e.g. if the changes are likely make a difference for their data centers).

[edit: if they did and I just missed that please let me know; I only skimmed the article and the backstory, easy to miss something]

So now, let's take a look at integration and development, which I'll do later today. Bash, Git, Docker, Python, PyCharm, vscode, smb/cifs, http, sql. In the immortal words of The Monkees: "...now I'm a believer..." #BSD #FreeBSD #Linux

@laz000.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy:

Ok so having spent 20+ years away from FreeBSD as a desktop I gotta say, it has improved by leaps and bounds. From automatic detection of video, audio, and wireless. I had an updated, usable system in about an hour. Web, Email, Music, Movies, and Photos.

For anyone wondering why the Nazis on Twitter, Meta, and the US State are having a meltdown today it's because China dropped about a half dozen brand new AI models that outperform anything ChatGPT/Grok/Claude/Llama can do, take a fraction of the time and money to create and upkeep, and made them all open source, ruining the AI market.

@GeofCox
Chinese progress is what happens when you have a Government that ‘gets it’. Having wasted a decade of my life trying to get UK politicians to invest in smart home technology (when we still had the opportunity to be world leaders), I’m not in the least surprised to hear that the West is falling behind in 85% of emerging technologies.

Reminder, Linus sometimes rejects #LinuxKernel pull requests[1] – which is why I distrust #Linux news sites that write stories along the lines of "foo will be in #Kernel version bar" based on merge requests without mentioning that risk.

And why do that at all? There are often just a few hours or a day or two between the pull request and Linus merging it, so why not just wait a bit?

1/ And sure, often…

[1] this happened to the main MM updates from akpm for 6.14 today: lore.kernel.org/all/CAHk-=whdd…

2/ …the problem that leads to Linus rejecting a pull request is often resolved within a few days. But that is not always the case and news sites sometimes (often?) miss that. Which is why I in rare cases noticed lot's of news sites all over the world reporting some feature made it into a new Linux release[1], when in fact it was rejected by Linus for that cycle.

[1] often all inspired by one story on a particular Linux news site without basic fact-checking 🥴
