How Trump responds to this will be illuminating, though my guess he will run roughshod over the law
in reply to Andrew

This is highly relevant right now

yikes.
maybe if someone tries taking your agency away you cut their head off and mount it on a pole. seems more useful.

When your phone dies, what will you lose?

Yesterday my phone screen just stopped responding to touch. The phone appeared to be fine other than that, but I could not even turn it off! I've had it 3.5 years and I always buy 2nd hand phones anyway, so perhaps I can't complain. But there's that familiar feeling of Shit! What do I care about that is only on my phone?!

Bizarrely it started working again after I plugged it into my computer, but I can't trust it now. So I've had the chance to back stuff up. But it's a good reminder.

My existing mitigations:
#nextcloud (though I don't yet trust it's 2way sync) #keepass #selfHosting notes and the photos I want to keep. Too-old settings backups.

Nearly lost:
Unsorted photos, gpx files, map markers, signal backup file. List of installed apps and their sources (now using AppListBackup).

breaking: guy who was an asshole to a transfem earlier turns out to be kind of a jerk overall

"too bad there were no signs and no way to stop making this mistake" says everyone :neocat_pensive:

Chissà com'è che, da quando ho messo un secchio di viti da dividere proprio davanti alla porta, nella #mastofficina non passa più molta gente a noiosare.

Quasi quasi faccio finta di niente e lo lascio lì.

Seems like a good time to mention that any device that tracks your temperature and/or resting heart rate is a period tracker. Your FitBit would know whether you were pregnant, even with cycle tracking turned off.

People don’t like starlings but have you seen their mumurations? Have you heard them talk like little robots?

Is there a standard ordering of how much something is your problem out of Not Your Circus and Not Your Monkeys, Your Circus but none of Your Monkeys, Not Your Circus but all Your Monkeys, and Both Your Circus And Your Monkeys?

Asking for a friend who might have a lot of cleaning up to do.

(proudly) that's my monkey. She could have had an easy life working at the zoo I run, but instead she went out and got a nice circus job on her own. She didnt want to be some kind of nepo monkey

My last post is an interesting example of why I don't think we can ever really have a set, positional grammar for emoji. In words, it's "hammered shit", but the emoji work better as 💩🔨 because of the direction the hammer is facing. 🔨💩 looks more like the shit is *wielding* the hammer or something.

I should really read Because Internet; I'm sure @gretchenmcc has thought *way* more about this than I have.

in reply to Kagan MacTane

There is a connection between emoji directions and syntax: Since emoji were developed in Japan, and since Japanese is a verb final language written from left to right, most emoji depicting an action face left. That way, the direct object of an action, or the destination of any kind of transportation, is likely to be placed directly to the left of the verb.

That makes emoji syntax more complicated in other languages. But alternate directions are being added, e.g.: 🚶🚶‍➡️

in reply to Head·word /ˈhedˌwɜː(ɹ)d/ n.

@headword Oh, cool info, thank you! I knew they were from Japan (originally at least), but hadn't noticed that most action-emoji go leftward, and therefore hadn't put it together with Japanese's SOV order.

I was quoted in The Australian today discussing a recent study on chemicals in cookware that was found to have greatly overestimated the concentrations present, as well as how this error slipped through cracks in the peer-review system.
