QUOTE - Mijn conclusie is helder: mensen in de marge zijn vandaag de dag slechter af. De groeiende ongelijkheid en gelaagdheid leiden tot toenemende verschillen in gezondheid, levenskwaliteit en levenskansen.Janos (Sargasso)
I'm expecting there are people here who know the details behind this, so I'd like to learn more.
It was doing the rounds some time ago:
"Aoccdrnig to rsceearh dnoe at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltrtees be at the rghit pclae."
Douglas Hofstadter wrote a rebuttal:

So ... was there actually any research?
Does anyone have a reference?
I've only ever seen the meme/anecdote.
As always, boosts for reach would be welcome.
Cheers!

“What’s scary about this time around with the administration is that it’s so much more coordinated,” said Sam Zeno, a senior policy analyst for conservation policy at the liberal Center for American Progress, about the mining projects already moving forward.
“They’re purporting to move forward with as many projects as they can, as quickly as they can."

Challenges to high-performance computing threaten US innovation
Today’s supercomputers are enormously powerful, but the work they do − running AI and tackling difficult science − is pushing them to their limits. Building bigger supercomputers won’t be easy. The Conversation
Social media is as social as Las Vegas where #SocialMedia #advertisement giants as telecom providers of society, take care of the lightshow to lure us in.
@Sironimo and Jonas Kießling argue for more deliberate design of our communication mechanisms. The #SocialWeb of #ActivityPub and #Fediverse gives control back to people, allows us to rethink how we want to interact. There's a big role for #OpenScience to help #FOSS devs address needs in #society and #ReimagineSocial.

in reply to robinhouston • • •@robinhouston I hope to get back to this to write something that summarises people's replies.
Yes, some of the Hofstadter version is easy, and one feels that it's enough to get the sense, but for me ... not convinced. It is clear that some people find it easier than others, and that pings into the other references ... people use different mechanisms to different degrees.
It's intriguing.

I found Hofstadter's letter much harder.

in reply to Colin the Mathmo • • •@robinhouston Hofstadter's is certainly more difficult. A possible counter-argument to the point Hofstadter is making with it: this is at least partly about _recognition_, and those longer words are rarer and harder to recognize.
I'm not sure I believe this counter-argument very much. For instance, one of the words I found trickiest in Hofstadter's message is also one of the commonest-once-unscrambled: "showermee". "Fliderny" is also a very ordinary word but wasn't instant for me.
I wonder whether Hofstadter is telling the truth about no longer being able to unscramble "isoduinis". It doesn't seem very difficult to me, especially given the word that follows it (which took me longer, but Hofstadter implies that he figured that one out).
