The thing that made this all make sense for me is finding out who the tarsands investors are; by and large and on the whole, it's the entire Canadian economy. Charted banks, pension funds, mutual funds, with few individual investors.

There is no way to stop it through normal political channels; you'd have to agree to impoverish nearly everyone at least some, rather like pointing out that if your house has a combustion furnace it's got much less value than the market presently assigns.

Hey all! I'm not new to Mastadon, but I just moved to beige.party from Mastodon.social. I'm still not exactly sure why Mastodon.social is a bad thing, but after checking out the beige, joining the party just seemed right.

A little more than a year ago, I discovered "In Otter News" and felt an immediate connection to Steve Otter. Before retiring, I papered my office walls with posters of Steve, Brad, and Brenda. I'm pretty sure the Otter is my spirit animal (or maybe drunk tank buddy).

Anyway, happy to be part of the party!

delightful, nice to meet you Steve.

I understand mastodon.social is large, and large instances are harder to moderate and more expensive to operate. so I think spreading out as you've done is a good thing to do as an optimisation, but not necessarily a necessity.

people have their own expectations, things like word count, moderation service performance, whatever else. it more than exceeds my needs and I'm proud to chip in - by far the best social media website I have ever seen!

@falcennial Thanks Fulcrum. I have a vague idea of what the Fediverse is. Kind of like when I look at the night sky and understand the Universe 😎. Going thru the 'Move' process actually made it a bit clearer.

The always excellent Dr Trita Parsi chairs a discussion about Iran in a changing region, held at the Doha Forum..

On the panel is Dr Javad Zarif, former Iran Foreign Affairs Minister.

Really interesting to see Iran being quit open about its recent bruises, especially in a traditionally hostile "gulf Arab" crowd.

He's smiling but shaming the gulf Arab audience.

"We're the only country that responded to Israel"

"We don't import our security"

Oof !

If anyone can pull this off, it's Zarif. Some of the more conservative elements in Iran despise him (and the Rouhani gov), but I miss this guy.

You are politically motivated and there is no reason to listen to you.

I call for the abolishment of billionaires like Musk

Forever.

@eunews@mastodon.social:

Elon Musk and his Russian friends call for the abolishment of the EU
On Twitter/X, Elon Musk says: “The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people.” Dmitry Medvedev, ex-President and ex-Prime Minister of Russia, a close ally of Vladimir Putin and currently the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia, then replies to Elon Musk’s post approvingly, saying “Exactly.”
