Well, it's been a week as of today. They're burying him tomorrow. He'll be at a rural cemetery.

It is not at all fancy, and it is very wholesome. There is not a single blade of grass in the entire place. People decorate graves there, and no one takes anything away. There is no uniformity anywhere because, clearly, that was never a goal anyone had. The first person buried there was in 1894, IIRC.

He'd seen it, and he'd said it himself that he liked it, and that he wouldn't at all mind being buried there, which is totally unsurprising coming from him.

He actually knew someone who, unfortunately, was already buried there somewhat recently. My neighbors have a lot of family buried there, too, according to them.

He was a veteran, he spent his entire career wearing a blue collar, and he retired to this community because he'd worked here during the 1970s and he wanted to come back. He cared deeply about those he loved, and not at all about appearances. He would've rather his final resting place be with the community with whom he chose to spend his final years—in the same literal dirt, along with the rest of them, going all the way back to the turn of the century before last—than someplace with a manicured lawn in town where everything looks the same, as if to suggest that those who are no longer with us were all the same.

Mom bought the plot next to him, and I've made it known that whenever it's my time to go, I'm to be cremated and my urn is to be buried with them. So I think it's fair to say that the whole family feels the same way about this. This is home.
