Sam Altman doesn’t understand ads which doesn’t bode well for ChatGPT’s ads efforts. Amazon & Google search ads provide what people are looking for which is why they work. If I’m looking for a good toaster, I don’t care if the first result is an ad or free.

The same goes for ads on Instagram which people who aren’t even explicitly searching for purchases find valuable.

The important thing is making the ads relevant to the user.

Context: I worked on ads at Bing and currently on ads at Meta.

I find it a bit of a misnomer that what Google and Amazon do is called “advertising”. In practice, it’s more like collecting a commission for connecting a user to the result that they needed.

Good morning, friends! 🌞 I awoke with a migraine from wretched dreams about the absurdity of neighbours. “My hands are full of shards of glass,” I said to them. “Can this wait?”

I unfortunately cannot stop thinking of yesterday’s read, and I now believe it was a world conceived in want of a story. The world should have been the star yet the simplistic plot and insufferable characters prevented its shine: I guess only Borges is allowed to center the setting.
