You could try and argue the opposite, as you say, but that would require explaining why the USA experiences more gun violence in ten days than Australia has in ten years.

Last time i checked there was 1.2 gun per capita in the US. next on the list of places that ain't an active warzone are Switzerland and Finland with about 0.4 gun per capita.
Both countries have marginal levels of gun violence and no mass shootings i know of.
Australia has about 0.15 gun per capita.
