› mediapart.fr/journal/politique…
I had never heard of Alien Soldier on the SEGA Genesis. There is a reason.
In North America, it was locked to the SEGA Channel. That was an online service in an era when most people did not even have dial-up. If you did not subscribe, the game effectively did not exist.
Japan and Europe got physical cartridges. North America did not.
I finally bought a legal copy on Steam in 2016. Within minutes, it felt familiar. The controls, the pacing, the combat rhythm. It plays almost exactly like Gunstar Heroes.
That is because both were made by Treasure. This is what they did best on the Genesis.
The difference is difficulty. Alien Soldier is far harsher. Even on easy, it is punishing. It also clearly wants more buttons while pretending the 3-button controller is enough.
Still, it is a strong game. The title is painfully generic. The design is not. If you like Gunstar Heroes and want something meaner, this is worth your time.
"The NHS is struggling and in crisis, but not because of a “super flu”. It is struggling because flu season has come early, vaccines are offering partial protection from a mutated circulating strain, there has been poor take-up and inaccessibility of the seasonal flu vaccine, and it is a health service that hits a critical state every single winter."

Don’t call it a ‘super flu’ - but the NHS is right to be worried this winter
An early flu season, a new variant and poor takeup of vaccines leave the already vulnerable health service in a dangerous position, says Prof Devi Sridhar, chair of global public health at the University of EdinburghDevi Sridhar (The Guardian)
@mike Our authorities don't seem to be able to think big about respiratory infections.
I get a free flu vaccine at my GP around the corner because I have asthma, but to get the COVID vaccine I have to cycle halfway across Cambridge and pay a hundred quid. Madness.
Create a poll of three projects you've worked on and one you haven't. Ask people to guess the one you haven't:
- A reboot of the BBC TV SF drama Doomwatch (0 votes)
- Back-end dev for a dot-com payment service (0 votes)
- Daleks invade Narnia: The Novel (0 votes)
- A Nature feature: Google's first decade in science (0 votes)
@Remittancegirl Looking back over other polls, yah, yes that tick does correlate with my choice
What can I say, I'm always right!

Since that hasn't alwyas been the case with Mozilla it would certainly be an improvement, and it'll be interesting to see if they really do move in that direction. Giving people the ability to see human-translated support pages that were overwritten by the AI-generated versions would a good first step. Call me cynical, but I'm not holding my breath.
But even if they do follow through on this, it's still the usual opt-out bullshit that companies who very justifiably aren't trusted use to hoodwink people into using functionality because they don't know they should opt out (or can't navigate through all the places to opt out). If they really want to be trusted, they'd take an opt-in approach. Once again, though, I'm
